Far Out West: Billy The Kid
Scratch the Year of the Rabbit, we’re declaring this the year of the renegade. The last few years have tried and tested us all, join us in greeting this one with fervor, feeling empowered, fearless, and a little bit feisty!
The 2023 Spring/Summer collections fall under an overarching theme we’ve dubbed Far Out West. Naturally, it will have a heavy influence of the western look and lifestyle, and well, “far out” in every sense –as in groovy, as in geographically, as in pushing the envelope and out of this world.
The first of these collections is Billy the Kid, inspired by the legendary outlaw and his interesting origin story, influenced in no small part by the 1988 Brat Pack flick Young Guns , which was a steady soundtrack for years when our boys were growing up. This transitional collection is a study in color, in contrasts and complements, and another dose of dopamine dressing. It’s an experiment in edginess, premiering daring silhouettes and showcasing the subtle art of sparkle; we’re talking cropped corsets, full-length fringe, and sequins like you’ve never seen them.
This year, we’re embracing the outlaw attitude. We’re rebelling against the rules – there is no dressing too young or too loud. We’re showing up to be seen. Lean in to looking as fearless as you feel.

If we’ve seen it once, we’ve seen it a thousand times – and believe us, we’ve seen it at least that many. When Audrey’s oldest boys, Taylor and Bryson, were young, they watched Young Guns every single day, often three or four times. Not only did they know every word by heart, they would also rig up the ottomans as their mighty steeds and ride right alongside the Regulators in their imagination.
The Usual Suspects
What is it that’s so irresistible about an outlaw? Even the most law-abiding among us must admit there’s an intrigue to the kind of characters that ran rogue in the Wild West.
We’re certainly not here to glorify a gangster, but we do resonate with a rebellious spirit, and there’s a whole modern-goth movement happening in fashion that speaks to us on a cellular level. Old school angst has elevated to empowered indifference. Buck societal norms, shake up the status quo, and outfit yourself in edginess.

Lavender, Locked & Loaded
Time to set your sights on this pretty pastel, because a hue dubbed “digital lavender” has been appellated by industry experts as the color of the year.
Lavender – the flower and the color – have long signified a sense of soothing, even sleep, and its pervasive presence in fashion is an advancing evolution of dopamine dressing. The initial phase, the intense neons, was meant to invigorate and energize, to jolt us into the excitement of being out and about again. This phase, led by lavender, aims to evoke calm and comfort, to help you feel grounded and equip you with an attitude that says “you got this!” Because, girl, you do.
Takin’ a Shine to Life
You should never let anyone dull your sparkle, but when it comes to fashion, it’s ok to take it down a notch.
Subtle shine is showing up big right now. Think matte sequins, muted metallics, and foiled fabrics, but you’ll also see stronger sparkle in small doses and unexpected applications, like a shimmery tank peeking out beneath a bold leather biker or afterthought accents like silvery sequined fringe on a sunrise serape. It can be dressed up or down, lowkey or loud, a hint or the whole look – you’ll be surprised how seamlessly you can work a little shine into your wardrobe and how much it will level up your look.

“Lavender is the color of the year, it represents the next phase of dopamine dressing; I think we’re going to learn a lot about the versatility of a hue that’s both soft and strong.”

Purple As A Pugilist
Many a young’uns in the late ‘80s probably learned from the cult classic Young Guns that a pugilist is a fancy word for fighter, specifically a boxer. And, well, we’ve got to say, it is quite an apt term for purple – particularly as an accessory –because as pretty as it is, it sure packs a punch!

The Kid’s in Love
History paints Billy the Kid as more of a rough-and-tumble renegade than a romantic, but rumor has it that his heart belonged to a young maiden named Paulita Maxwell, the sister of a well-known wealthy rancher in the small town of Sumner, New Mexico. This rumored romance humanized Billy in a way, and these pretty velvet pieces are a nod to his leading lady.

Justice may not be, and human nature certainly isn’t – to this day it’s debated whether Billy the Kid was a ruthless renegade or a reckless youth without a rudder – but in terms of fashion, the classic contrast stands the test of time.
We’ve often referred to black as the “winged eyeliner of an outfit” and essential to the aesthetic of every collection we design, it simultaneously elevates and grounds. It can temper down any array of colors and it’s the epitome of sleek and chic on its own, but nothing compares to how clean and crisp it is when combined with its counterpart. This year you can expect to see an influx of black and white in paired pieces, in complementing contrast accents, in greyscale graphics, and showing up strong in accessories.

Renegades, Rebels & Rouge
Nothing turns a head like red. From candy apple to crimson, it’s a shade that says you are showing up to be seen.
Red is strong, it’s sexy, it’s powerful, and it’s inherently rebellious in a way, all characteristics we appreciate and, incidentally, all things that tend to align with the legend of Billy the Kid. In that vein, we decided to it up daringly, bringing you traffic-stopping biker jackets and whistleworthy sexy suede boots. Even the innocence of eyelet is amped up to edgy when presented in a punchy red.
