Giant: Baron’s Ball, Holiday 2019

Baron’s Ball With the Giant collection, we promised you grit and glamour. We’ve given you grit: in Wildcatter, in Cattlemen, in Riata. In Baron’s Ball, we give you glamour. Inspired by Jett Rink’s signature “made it” moment - the unveiling of his new hotel, the “everybody who is anybody will be there” event of the century - the Baron’s Ball collection is glitz and grandeur in a classy, understated delivery. We temper dazzling metallics with smooth velvets; deep purples with warm greys. There are long flowing skirts and sassy short dresses. There are dark embellished tops and silvery studded jackets. There are shortie boots and accents of shimmery Mother of Pearl jewelry. It is a collection to make you appear effortlessly amazing and lackadaisically luxurious. The Giant collection has been one of our favorites. It has taken us on a journey, exploring different characters, cultures, and points of view. We have been wary to even touch it, being the epic that it is, but we are proud of how it turned out, and we hope we did it justice. We are thrilled to wrap it up on this glamorous note.

Holiday Sparkle & Shine Your holiday attire doesn’t have to be red or green — and for the love, let’s not be trite this year. Express that you are feeling festive with low-sheen sparkles and dazzles. Our holiday collection is saturated with deep mulberry and warm grey and luxurious velvet. We have worked in patchwork (which started in our Wildcatter collection with Bunkhouse Blanket Jackets) in an elevated and elegant way (like this skirt). But the star of the show? Subtle silver. From shimmery short dresses to silvery shortie boots, we have incorporated muted metallics in a way that feels show-stopping, but not eye-popping. Of all the boots we’ve made over the decades, this is our first line made in a metallic leather - and we were lucky to get them crafted in time for this shoot! This trend is exploding on runways and destined to last for a decade or longer, and then they’ll no doubt be coveted pieces of vintage wear. They’re the perfect punctuation to everything from skinny jeans to shift dresses, to make a statement that you’re both fashionable and festive.

This year, do as a “Giant” would - silver up and stand out!

The Art of Gifting Being a good gifter is, well, a gift. Some people are innately good at it. They pick up on hints you drop, they make a mental note of that one thing you said you liked that one time, and then later it shows up on your doorstep or at your birthday party or in your stocking. But even if you have that magical gene, it’s not easy to buy a gift for a fashionista. You don’t know their size, you don’t want to guess it wrong (in either direction). But there’s always jewelry! It always fits, they’ll never outgrow it, and it lasts forever. Plus, it packages so well for the actual act of giving. Whether you go with a Squash Blossom necklace, a meaningful sterling silver tag, or perhaps a pair of dangling artisan earrings, they box up quite nicely. Wrap them in dazzling paper or simply tie them up with an overstated satin ribbon (because the presentation is half the fun), and you’re definitely going to win Christmas this year!

“Glamour is a kind of assurance. It is a kind of knowing you are all right in every way, mentally, physically, and in appearance, and that, whatever the occasion or situation, you are equal to it.” – Marlene Dietrich

Mother of Pearl Why is this stone* so underappreciated? It’s inherently one-of-a-kind (our favorite element in all things), it’s shimmery and lovely, and it goes with absolutely everything. While it’s not the first thing you think of when envisioning Native American jewelry, artisans have been crafting it in their pieces for centuries, fashioning it into rings and bracelets and pendants. It makes for a nice change of pace from your collection of turquoise. We think Mother of Pearl should be celebrated year round, but it especially complements our holiday collection in that it is understatedly eye-catching. When paired with our deep velvety violets, it catches colors of purple, and next to sparkly silvers, it reflects subtle shimmers of metallic. It really is the “mother” of all accent pieces! *We know, it’s not a stone. It comes from the shell of mollusks.

Did You Know? The inspiration behind our Baron’s Ball holiday collection was, of course, the grand event in Giant. Believe it or not, this grand event, actually sort of happened. The character Jett Rink was (allegedly) based on real-life notorious wildcatter, “Diamond Glenn” McCarthy. Along the same lines as Jett, McCarthy lived a true rags-to-riches story, born to a poor family and later finding fortune in oil in Texas. He was determined to create his own destiny without any help from his father-in-law, the already established oilman Thomas P. Lee. And he did. Before it was all said and done, McCarthy’s estimated net worth was about $200 million, which equates to approximately $2 billion dollars in today’s money. But perhaps his most memorable business venture was the Shamrock Hotel, and its extravagant (to put it mildly) unveiling. In the mid-1940s, he invested $21,000,000 into the elegant establishment, an homage to his Irish heritage. He incorporated dozens of shades of green into its design, from the ink of the pen at the reception desk to the green grand piano in the expansive lobby. It is said that Diamond Glenn McCarthy put Houston on the map. While it may seem like the movie-makers took some liberties in exaggerating the grandiosity of the event in Giant, in reality, they weren’t too far off. McCarthy arranged a 16-car Santa Fe Chief super-train to ship in his friends from Hollywood for the celebration, and it’s estimated that 5,000 guests (some invited, and some uninvited) attended the grand opening. Unfortunately, the famous Shamrock Hotel was demolished in 1987, but the extravagance and elegance of the Shamrock Hotel and its grand opening live on in legend. In history books, in the movie Giant, and now, more than half a century later, in the Double D Ranch Baron’s Ball holiday collection.
