Giant: Cattlemen, Fall 2019

Giant & Cattlemen Before there was big oil there was still big money. Before we knew what was under the ground, we were pretty keen at raising profits above it. The cattle industry was king. Cattlemen ruled the land. They ruled the land because they owned the land. A man’s worth, his social standing, and his marital prospects were directly correlated to the amount of land he owned. In Giant, the 1956 film based on a novel by Edna Ferber, Jordan Benedict owned a staggering 595,000 acres (an enormous spread by today’s standards) and established his place in the upper echelon of society. Double D Ranch’s Fall 2019 Collection celebrates when cattlemen were living in the lap of luxury, when that lifestyle afforded fabulous furs and luscious leathers and more sterling silver and turquoise than a hand could hold. But it also celebrates the lifestyle of cattlemen. And it is a lifestyle. It’s not a job. It’s not something you get up, go to, go home, and don’t worry about it again until the next day. There are no holidays, no weekends, no days off. You break ice in sub-freezing temps, and you brand when it’s 105 degrees. You mend fences in the middle of the night and you pull calves on Christmas Day. You take the good with the bad and pray that someday it will pay off, even though everyone knows it never will and even you know that’s not why you’re doing it. But you do it anyway. Our Cattlemen Collection captures the essence of both. The feast and the famine. The luxury and the labor. The leather and the fur and the loads of turquoise that came from a successful sale, and the chic, simple, structured everyday wear that got you there.

Load Up Like Liz Liz Taylor, who played Leslie Benedict in Giant, was notorious for two things: her love of men and her love of jewelry. She is said to have had one of the most extensive, expensive, and significant jewelry collections in the world, which was auctioned after her death for a staggering $116 million. While we’re more drawn to turquoise and silver than diamonds and pearls, we’re on board with the idea that you can never have too much or wear it too boldly. Stack your bangles, layer your necklaces, and don’t be afraid to load up your lapels with pins and pendants!

La Vie en Velvet Velvet isn’t getting enough credit for its versatility. Yes, of course, it’s your go-to in December. It’s your holiday party gown. It’s that gorgeous vest you’ve been saving for winter. But it’s a lot more versatile than that. It can be a pair of pants (yes, velvet pants!) that you sport in the fall. It can be that lovely top that you wear in September. It can be a darling midi dress you don with shortie boots in the middle of who-cares-what-season because velvet is unseasonably cool. Velvet is the new “white”. Don’t tell us how and when we can wear it, because it’s beautiful and, done right, it works year-round.

Wyatt Ranches & Vaqueros You cannot talk or even think about Texas without cattle and ranching. Sure, we’ve got oil and gas now in Houston, technology in Austin, and fashion in Dallas. But before all of that, we were cattlemen. It’s our blood, our genes, and our history. Wyatt Ranches is the epitome of that. With acreage in West Texas from Marfa to Valentine, and in the south from Corpus Christi to the Rio Grande, they have (literally and figuratively) made their mark on the Lone Star State. Not only is their land home to the film set of the iconic Giant, it is the real-life inspiration behind Edna Ferber’s novel upon which the film is based. More than that, they are still, more than a half a century later, an expansive organization dedicated to ranching and the raising of cattle. They are living, breathing Texas “giants”. And the backbone of it all? Anyone at Wyatt Ranches will tell you, without hesitation, “the vaqueros”. Ranging in age from their twenties to their early seventies, some of the vaqueros are nearing thirty years of tenure and some are second-generation, drawing from the experience and guidance of their fathers. Many of the hardworking hands make it their life-long livelihood, and their commitment is honored. “It takes discipline, dedication, and loyalty to keep this machine on track and profitable,” said Brad Wyatt, Administrator of Wyatt Ranches. “As a sign of respect, line camps, cattle corrals, and windmills are often named in perpetuity for those vaqueros who have retired, or who have passed on.” Come what may, in terms of industry and advancement, cattlemen will forever be the cornerstone of the Texas legacy.

“It’s an unpredictable future when one is a steward of the land with livestock to tend.” — Bradford Wyatt, Administrator of Wyatt Ranches

Thanks to the gracious hospitality of the Wyatt family, Double D Ranch’s Fall Collections were able to be photographed on Giant-genuine locations on their historic ranches.

Shooting with Cowboys A picture really is worth a thousand words. A high-fashion model from across the pond, surrounded by hard-working cowboys from the Lone Star State. One dresses up for a living. The others dress for their lifestyle. And oh my word, the contrast in accents -- so stark, yet so endearing -you’d think we were shooting a made-for-TV movie. And the cowboys? Well, they’re the real stars here. Imagine someone coming into your place of business, completely green to the industry and the lifestyle, and setting up for a multi-day photo shoot. Oh, and they need your help -- like, a lot of it -- and you’re also sort of “in” the shoot, but not really, but you know, be on your A-game. You’d probably be a little put off, and rightfully so. Not the cowboys of Wyatt Ranches. We invaded their world for a couple of days, and these gentlemen were warmly welcoming, incredibly helpful, and as mannerly as you would imagine. And completely genuine about it all. Truly, salt of the earth. They have our utmost respect and eternal gratitude; none of this would’ve been possible without them.

Cowboy Slang Every industry has its jargon, but cowboys have a language all their own. It’s not really short-hand, but it’s not really long-hand either. It’s more like an unwritten code. “All hat and no cattle” A cowboy classic. Basically, someone who is full of themselves and full of hot air. The guy that dresses the part, talks a big game, but everyone knows he owns nothing and knows nothing.

“Don’t squat with your spurs on” Literally, it’s pretty obvious (and good advice). Figuratively, it means don’t do something rash that’s going to bite you in the you-know-what.

“Shine the belt buckle” It really just means going out dancing. Whether you interpret it as shining it up before you go out, or shining it from dancing cheek to cheek, well that’s up to you.

“Spur up and get a cup” The daily habit of lifelong ranchers who no longer live that lifestyle full-time, but still dress in full regalia before they go to meet their comrades at the small-town gas station to sip black coffee and talk about life.

“Never ask a man the size of his spread” Unless you’re looking to buy it, it’s considered gauche to ask how many acres someone owns. It’s the equivalent of asking “how much do you make a year?”

Classic Cowgirl Double D Ranch is often recognized for being elaborate and over-thetop, but there is something to be said for simple cowgirl chic. We embraced that in our Cattlemen Collection because that’s the reality of the lifestyle, and because it is truly gorgeous in its own right. And it’s Luz. She was a no-frills kind of gal, and she didn’t try to gussy up what running Reata Ranch was really like, and yet, she made a strong classic impression on everyone who crossed her path. Solid staples like crisp white tops with subtle studding, and full-length draping denim skirts. It’s industrial, it’s sleek, and it’s still so striking. And it lends itself to accessorizing, with bold belt buckles, knotted scarves, statement boots, a signature hat, and as much sterling silver and turquoise as you please.

Wearing Our Art on Our Sleeve We’ve taken a literal — and historical — approach to the graphic tee. We designed a couple of sleek, black-and-white tops featuring a few Western photographs we love from The Library of Congress. The images are slightly oversized, overflowing on to the sleeves of the tops for an artsy dramatic aesthetic, and are “framed” with either studding or stitching for elevated edginess. The Point, Swing, Flank & Drag Top features historical images of an actual Texas cattle drive. With a band of horseback cowboys on the front and a herd of cattle on the back, the top almost gives the illusion of a 360-degree view of the event of moving cattle. The name, of course, is derived from the four critical positions of riders on a cattle drive. On the Rowels Tunic, we’ve blown up an iconic image of boots and spurs. The eye is drawn to the focal point, the rowel itself, which is the spiked spoke element of a spur. The simplistic style and minimalist coloring makes them perfectly pairable with everything from denim to black — they’re literally wearable art.

Trophy Buckles You don’t have to win the rodeo to steal the show. Trophy buckles are among the most fun accessories in Western wear. Some are hand-crafted from scratch, some are vintage finds that have been revitalized by adding decorative elements, and all of them have a little bit of their own personality to them. A trophy buckle is an unexpected statement piece that adds a bit of boldness to even the simplest of outfits.

Cluster Work From belt buckles to cuffs to pendants and pins, cluster work is one of the most common, recognizable, and eye-catching designs in the world of Native American jewelry. It is also among the most intricate and labor-intensive for jewelry artisans; every stone is hand-cut, which requires an immense amount of time and skill. Most often you see it in turquoise, but it’s lovely in red coral, too! Though it occasionally features squares and a more straight-edge layout, the most common iteration of cluster work is in the signature circular style, the wagon wheel radial layout.
