Eloise Strong women aren’t born, they’re raised. We’ve often joked that we come from a long line of outlaws — and it’s true that we’ve got some boundarypushers in our family tree — but we are also blessed to have a number of influences who were steadfast examples of how to live life the right way. Our Grandmother Eloise was integral in our upbringing, key to the core of our beings and the people we grew into. She was a testament of resilience, the epitome of hard work and loyalty and kindness. She was dealt a difficult hand, and yet she overflowed with unconditional love for us; she embodied the ideal that being tough doesn’t have to make you hard. She taught us to love wholly, generously, and joyously; a love so all-encompassing and pure that one out of a million people might have the capacity for it and that its absence is felt every day still. The Fall 2022 collections draw on characters from our own stories, from our ancestors to our alter egos, pulling inspiration from the pages of our scrapbooks. The first collection, a nod to our paternal grandmother, is both an homage to everything Eloise was and a tribute to everything she never got to be. It’s the rustic Western rodeo vibes from her era, the workshirts and Comal County plaids, balanced with the upscale and elegant femininity that never fit into her lifestyle where the work never stopped. It’s reminiscent and a little romantic, and every piece is a wearable reminder of where we came from and what we’re made of. Life is tough, darling, but so are you.

Trade Silver
Till Goodan
There’s an inimitable element of artwork created by someone who can walk the walk; it lends it a certain power, an unspoken authenticity, an amplified relatability. Perhaps it was his many years of ropin’, ridin’, and rodeoin’ that propelled Till Goodan’s God-given talent from admirable to ubiquitous. Once Till traded his callouses for canvases, his lifestyle depictions of ranching and rodeos and all things cowboy took on a life of their own, becoming pervasive throughout the early-to-mid 20th Century in everything from illustrations of Gene Autry’s comic books to signature collections of Wallace China dinnerware. That aesthetic was everywhere, so even though Eloise wasn’t your traditional art collector, she was clever and thrifty enough to scavenge old calendar covers and the like to do her decorating and keep her humble home feeling artfully en vogue. That imagery illustrated our childhood and you’ll find nods to it in this collection.

“I was the oldest grandchild, so I always felt a special bond to her. She was so full of unconditional love, she doted on us. She would work all day, two or three jobs, and then still come home and play with us. She passed away when I was in college, and I still miss her love every single day.” - Cheryl McMullen

Comal Cotton Mills For more than 80 years, the bustling blue-collar business on Porter Street had a wide-reaching impact on Comal County, and for more than a dozen summers, it had an indelible impact on us, too. In 1923, a modest mill opened up shop in New Braunfels, Texas, nestled up against the Guadalupe River. Over the decades, it expanded exponentially into a massive manufacturing operation, producing cotton textiles from start to finish, and employing nearly a thousand people. It eventually developed into what they called Milltown, which incorporated buildings that served as quarters for the millworkers and even a little company store. But it was the retail room that interested us. We spent almost every summer of our childhoods with Eloise and Odie, and at the end of each summer, Eloise would take us down to the cotton mill and buy up the fabric remnants to send home to make us new school clothes. Of course, they were all cotton, and boring old plaids, when we longed for polyester Pucci prints, but even so, the generosity of that gesture was never lost on us; helping prepare us girls for school each fall was just part of Granny’s love language, and in hindsight, it was priceless no matter the actual cost. And we even grew to appreciate plaid.

Her First Fur Eloise never had a fur coat. Of all the admirable terms and phrases we could use to describe our Granny, fancy would not be one of them. Not in terms of dress anyway. Her outfits were utilitarian, inelegant, practical. Her shoes were seemingly always worn thin from the hours and hours she spent on her perpetually-aching feet. Eloise didn’t show up to be seen, she showed up to do. And yet, even she could find joy and appreciation in a little bit of luxury – she rolled around town in a limited-edition champagne pink Thunderbird that somehow Daddy Doug had managed to get ahold of for her back when he was running dealerships. She’d have never asked for a fur coat – she never asked for anything, not even that car, a fur coat surely wasn’t even on her radar – and probably would’ve refused if we’d tried to gift her one in life. Well, she can’t stop us now. This one’s for you, Eloise.

The Avocado Green Recliner Every childhood has a chair. A chair that is as familiar to you as your own bedroom, and every bit as comforting. You can picture it right now; every lump and sag, every crease in the leather, perhaps a cantankerous recliner lever that dang near required the expertise of a gear shift. You can feel it, too; the fabric, the way your tiny body sunk into its well-worn places like a hug, and the victory of claiming it before your siblings. We’d be willing to bet you can even still smell it; grandaddy’s aftershave or grandmother’s perfume, a faint mustiness of dirt from the fields, or even the sickly-sweet scent of tobacco. For us, that chair was Odie Mac’s recliner. It was upholstered in avocado green vinyl, it made a god-awful creak when he reclined, and it had an Odell-shaped mold to it from all the time he spent in it. Heck, we sisters never even got a chance to fight over it because he seemingly never got out of it. It’s hard to recall whether the chair went first or Odie did because to this day we can hardly picture one without the other, an image that lives tucked away in the sepia-toned corners of our brain, a subtle subconscious influence that made its way into the colors of this collection. There simply had to be a green recliner cameo in the editorial imagery of the Eloise catalog.

Joya Real “Stay out of the way of guests, and always be on your best behavior.” Those were the only two rules during those idyllic summers we spent with our grandparents in South Texas. Eloise and Odie lived and worked on the Joya Real dude ranch; he managed the horses and the maintenance of the grounds, she tended to the guests, and they resided in a charming little care keeper’s cottage. When we’d go for our annual stays, we thought we were Western royalty. We were free to roam and explore and enjoy all the little luxuries of the gorgeous grounds; we could swim at our leisure, ride horses, play shuffleboard, collect peacock feathers, and help ourselves to anything we desired from the big industrial fridge in the kitchen. It was paradise. And yet, though we were fortunate to indulge in the amenities, what makes these memories so meaningful now is that they’re enveloped in the one-of-a-kind, unconditional love of Granny Eloise.

“Eloise was a fun-loving woman. She was a hard worker, she was pretty, and she was fun. She had a heart of gold, she loved her children and grandchildren. She never had much money, but she always had some coins tucked away, and when I would drop the girls off with her, I wouldn’t even be out of the parking lot before she was sneaking them money and sending them to the store for green Jolly Rancher candy.” - Margie “Nana” McMullen

“She was very loyal, loyal to a fault sometimes, probably. But she was also mischievous, she’d make you laugh.Like tossing popcorn into a stranger’s cowboy hat so it would get lodged in the crease, unbeknownst to the wearer, and then we would just giggle and giggle. She’d get us into something that we knew we could get in trouble for, but it was ok, because we were with a grownup. She was young at heart, and playful.” - Audrey Franz
