Gayle’s Closet Gayle isn’t a ‘who’; it’s a what and a when. It’s an era, it’s an attitude, it’s a celebration of western women’s rise to fame. While the other Cowgirl Closets we’re figuratively peering into belong to a particular person we admire, the Gayle collection is inspired by an amalgamation of characters, of the notion of the iconic cowgirl in the height of television Westerns. “We were children of the ‘60s,” said Cheryl McMullen, designer for Double D Ranch. “Westerns were ubiquitous; there were literally dozens of shows airing at the time. Like anything that gets over-popularized, they started to get a little kitschy, what they called ‘four-wall Westerns’, that were a little more Hollywood than high plains. But that’s when the costumes got better! Cowgirls got a little more glamorous – leading lady vibes – and that’s what this collection is about.” It’s a little bit Miss Kitty, a little bit Patsy Cline. Retro meets rhinestones. Pin-up meets pony up. It has hues that will take you back to the time of tailfin Cadillacs and silhouettes that remind you how subtle sexy can be.

Cowgirl Pinups There’s a certain twang to television cowgirls that is indicative of the era and the shift in the way Hollywood was representing women on the small screen, giving their characters a little more sass and sensuality. Perhaps the most well-known and prolific of all American pinup artists is the legendary Gil Elvgren. Having created more than 500 paintings and mentored dozens of apprentices, he made an indelible impact on the artistic genre. Often imitated but never duplicated, Elvgren had a signature style that is sometimes described as a ‘naughty Norman Rockwell’. Unlike the real-life perception of actual cowgirls as hardened and hard-working, even masculine (think Luz Benedict in Giant), Elvgren’s illustrations of cowgirls gave them colorful character, portraying them as sensual starlets. “Elvgren’s artwork heavily influenced the aesthetic of this catalog,” Cheryl said. “He was the ‘it’ American pinup artist, and the span of his career coincided with the TV Westerns boom we’re channeling. We drew inspiration for the set and the props from some of his paintings, and we styled the models in mid-century pinup hair and makeup, capturing that kind of ‘cowgirl coquette’ vibe that was present in Elvgren’s westernthemed portraits.” Though it distinctly depicts a bygone era of Americana, Elvgren’s work is evergreen. More than four decades after his death, it is still every bit as coveted and collectible as it’s ever been.

Women in Westerns From Miss Kitty to Mattie Ross to the iconic Etta Place, Westerns just wouldn’t be the same without their leading ladies. “Women really had to elbow their way into Westerns,” Cheryl said. “Males were always the lead, the cowboy was always the hero – that’s always who was driving the narrative – and in many cases, the females were almost ornamental. There’s the joke that in Westerns, the horses got more screen time than the women. So, it was momentous, and truly a testament to these actresses, how they were able to develop these characters and elevate them to integral players in the plot. In retrospect, Miss Kitty is every bit as memorable as Marshal Dillon. Suddenly the ‘damsel in distress’ trope was replaced with women who had fortitude – and attitude!” Naturally, as feisty young women ourselves, we appreciated and admired that about these silver screen cowgirls. While the clothing in this collection is a little more colorful, more twangy, a little more retro than Wild West, the broader inspiration was celebrating that strength and the spirit of demanding to be seen.

Beaded Zuni Slides Though they tend to feel synonymous with cowboys, believe it or not, bolos weren’t born in the Wild West. While there are a couple different origin stories for how bolos came to be, it can be argued that Hopalong Cassidy and the rise of the TV cowboy really brought them to the forefront of Western wear. These days a bolo slide can be made out of anything from a coin to a concho to an old belt buckle, but what we’re loving right now are these beaded beauties. “For as much time as I spend obsessing over the art and origin of Southwestern jewelry, I can’t believe I only recently discovered these beaded bolo slides,” Cheryl said. “They are Zuni creations, roughly mid20th century, and they are hand-beaded into little longhorn figures using sheep vertebrae and colorful seed beads. They’re really neat little pieces, really unique.” We’ve never met a bolo we didn’t like, but these beaded beauties are something special. Slip one on and see for yourself!

The Rise of the Dude Ranch Most folks have heard of dude ranches, and even have a vague idea of what they are, but likely haven’t given much more than a passing thought to origins of the experience – or the name. Dating back to the late 19th century, dude ranches were born in a time that saw both a decrease in the sustainability of ranches on cattle alone and an increase in the romanticism of the American West. There was an inherent curiosity among eastern socialites about the rugged ranch lifestyle and ‘how the other half lived’, which fostered an opportunity for agritourism that provided the advantage of the experience without all the risk for the guests and a supplemental source of income for the ranchers. In more recent years, these curated cowboy experiences have trended toward calling themselves ‘guest ranches’ over the traditional term ‘dude ranch’, a shift that is seemingly two-fold: ‘guest ranch’ is a little more evident and indicative of what it actually is, and in its origin, ‘dude’ was meant in kind of a patronizing way, a term that full-time cowboys used to refer to well-heeled city-dwellers who traveled out west for a temporary taste of the lifestyle, but would be unlikely to survive the day-today demands outside their comfort zones for long. In addition to the name, the experience and the audience has also evolved. Originally intentionally authentic and rugged, the adventures were catered primarily to adult males craving a look at the life. Nowadays, the accommodations are more comfortable and the events are catered toward family-friendly entertainment, with things like trick ropers and tame trail rides.
