A Grand Adventure, Fall 2018
A Grand Adventure The allure of an adventure is all the “new” you will encounter along the way. The scenery, the cuisine, the customs, and yes – the fashion. Whether your wanderlust carries you across the state or across the sea, you’re bound to be immersed in culture that is entirely unfamiliar to you. Some elements may give you a newfound appreciation of home, while others may make you question, “how did I live my whole life without this?!” As you travel, you pack these experiences into your memory – and often, your suitcase – and in a sense, you become a collector of cultures. This is the motif behind A Grand Adventure. With hints of bohemian, Asian, gypsy, and Spanish (just to name a few), Double D Ranch’s Fall Collection is a cohesive blend of the cultures that have inspired us along our adventures. Rich jewel tones of deep mahogany and frosted sage, paired with lush textures of leather, fur, and velvet, give the line an intriguing feel of laid-back luxurious.

Old Pawn By definition, “old pawn” (sometimes called “dead pawn”) is Native American jewelry that was pawned and then never reclaimed. Most commonly associated with Navajo jewelry, the pieces were generally created for personal or family wear, but were pawned out of necessity or sometimes for safe keeping. The owner could later reclaim the pieces for the pawn price plus interest of 10%. Those that were not reclaimed then became available for sale. Today old pawn is among the most highly collectible pieces of Native American Jewelry.
Pro Tip: One way to differentiate vintage from more recent jewelry is to determine if it is made of “coin silver.” “Coin silver” refers to Native American jewelry crafted from melted down U.S. coins minted between 1820 and 1965.

Make a Statement Standing out is so in. Head-turning hats. Big, bold belts. Stately scarves. Statement making jewelry. Even a surprising silhouette can make an impression. Whatever it is, find your thing – that thing that tells the crowd, “I have arrived” – and then own it. Wear your individuality.

While we adventurers aren’t much for constraints or labels, sometimes you hear a word that sums up the essence of your spirit so strongly that you can’t help but identify (and kind of fall in love) with it. 1. Wild at heart; moved by music, love, and art. Can often be spotted singing and dancing without a care. 2. Free-spirited individual, afflicted with chronic wanderlust. 3. Always on the move; never settling down - never settling, period. 4. Enticed by bearded gents, obscure arts and vintage goods.

Concho Belts Fun fact: Both the style and the name have been borrowed from the Spanish; “concha” which translates to “seashell”. Consisting of ornate silver discs, and frequently featuring accents of turquoise, it’s no wonder that concho belts are often classified as jewelry rather than a garment. Whether you wear it slack across your hips or use it to create a waist in an outfit of layers, a concho belt is a wearable work of art that adds a bold accent of Southwestern style.
Double D Ranch’s own line of concho belts are based on vintage designs we’ve admired over the years.

Lapis of Luxury Technically named “lapis lazuli”, this semi-precious stone is immediately recognizable for its intense, deep blue color. Depending on the mineral makeup, lapis is sometimes speckled with flecks of gold (pyrite), giving it a very celestial look, or features more white (calcite), which is commonly called “denim lapis”. And lapis is as rich in history as it is in hue. The stone makes up the eyebrows in King Tut’s funeral mask, Catherine the Great is said to have adorned an entire room of her palace in it – walls and all, and, during the Renaissance, painters like Michelangelo used the ground up version, “ultramarine”, to produce the purest blues in paintings. But it gets even cooler. Lapis is considered a universal symbol of wisdom and truth, and while we’ve never seen it backed by science, it’s widely believed to bring inner peace and clear the mind of negative thoughts. We can’t think of a more fitting accessory for adventure.

Be Brave When it comes to building a “look”, you don’t have to commit to a culture. You don’t even have to commit to a continent! Some of the most interesting and eyecatching ensembles are a sampling of several signature styles. Native American jewelry next to Hungarian embroidery under a Spanish gaucho hat? Yes, please!
You’re an adventurer – be adventurous!

Suede & Fringe Sure, people are wearing it yearround now, but let’s be honest – when the temperature drops, you know it’s suede season. And this year, you can expect to see a lot of it. From jackets and boots to belts and bags, this perennial favorite is showing up in all shapes, sizes, and colors. One of the benefits of suede is its versatility. It can be a statement or as subtle as you want it to be. In the more neutral tones and blacks, it’s an excellent seasonal staple. In a more unexpected hue (like, say, frosted sage – see page 2), it becomes the fashion focus. Another benefit? Fringe. This material was practically made for fringing and that added element can really elevate the dimensionality of garments and accessories alike. Plus, it’s just so soft.

Mosaic Inlay The technique of inlaying mosaic jewelry is as unique as the pieces it creates, and applying it to Native American jewelry is a practice exclusively unique to Double D Ranch. Each stone is selected and cut by hand, and then carefully arranged into a mosaic pattern by our talented female jewelers. The stones are then mortared with a unique blend of fine jewelry glue and red clay dirt from the region, which lends a special richness and authenticity to the mosaic collection, and really ties the pieces back to the land and the culture of their origin.
