Come Away With Me: Jewely Junket Collection, Summer 2022

Jewelry Junket Shopping for jewelry just hits different. It never goes out of style, it always fits, and you can literally love it for life. It’s a long-running joke among our family that we only started Double D Ranch as an excuse to shop for jewelry. While there’s actually a whole lot more to it than that, we can’t deny that it’s a perk. Our appreciation for the artistry of southwestern jewelry has been a lifelong love. From our days marveling at the bejeweled ladies at the All American Futurity as children to sister trips to Santa Fe in search of that statement squash blossom, some of our favorite memories and most cherished treasures resulted from our own jewelry junkets. The thrill of the hunt, the drooling, the bargaining, and inevitably justifying the splurge to ourselves. This collection is a celebration of those adventures. The apparel reflects the gem tones of ranging turquoises and purple spiny oysters, and more literally interprets it in scaled-up prints of our favorite pieces. And aptly, in this third installment of the Come Away with Me collections, we are taking you along on a jewelry junket. What we look for, what we’re currently loving, even what we bring with us; tips and terms to learn and discern what it is you’re seeking in a southwestern statement piece. A jewelry junket is not simply a shopping trip. It’s an experience, an adventure, and an opportunity to acquire an heirloom.

Lapis & Lavender We’re on a journey with color. We’re venturing outside our comfort zone of complementary colors and experimenting with the analogous, those colors that neighbor each other on the color wheel and come together in a harmonious intensity. Pairing blues and purples creates a combination that innately evokes emotions of tranquility and transformation; almost a watery, flowy freedom that brings peace and calm rather than resistance. We could wax poetic about color theory, but from a fashion perspective, what’s significant about this color combination is that it’s soothing; it’s lovely, it’s pleasant, passive even, and it’s a perfect pairing for spring. It might be time to take inventory of your accessories, because lapis lazuli and purple spiny oyster are going to be center stage this season.

Meet Your Maker We ourselves are not technically craftsmen, but we are creators, and we innately understand the importance of acknowledgement. Artists bare a little bit of their soul with every piece they put out for public consumption and their talent should be exalted. This is why we are so committed to the arduous task of educating you to the best of our ability about the origin of every piece of jewelry we offer; it’s simultaneously a passion and a duty. When possible, we will let you know exactly who crafted it and anything else we may know about them, their signature styles, their providence, and any affiliation they may have with other renowned artisans, whether by lineage or tutelage. We’ve been at this a while, so some pieces we are able to instantly identify – like an Ondelacy original, a Kirk Smith, or an obvious Oscar Betz – and others we will research in a reference book that catalogs the known hallmarks of artisans in the industry. Unfortunately, we’re not always able to determine the artisan as hallmarks have only become common practice relatively recently, in which case we’ll tell you everything we can about the era and area of origin. And of course, we’ve made a concerted effort to provide a profile on each of our collaborating artists, because if you ask us, it matters who made it.

Turquoise Shapes Let’s talk turquoise. It’s quintessential to the collection of every cowgirl, country couture queen, and anyone with an appreciation for the art of southwestern style. But did you know there is a whole nomenclature for the shapes of the stones in your stash? Here’s a crash course in turquoise terminology so you can prattle on like a pro on your next jewelry junket.

Snake Eye: Circular stones, typically on the smaller side. Snake eye stones are common components of clusters and, as the name implies, can often act as eyes for stone-andsilver depictions of critters or characters.

Petit Point: Essentially a teardrop shape. Because they are narrowed to a point on one end, wider and rounded on the other, they inherently work well in circular arrangements, perhaps as petals of a flower or a ring in a radial cluster.

Needlepoint: Slender slivers, pointed at both ends. Needlepoint turquoise lends a very delicate, intricate aesthetic to a piece and is often found in Zuni creations, particularly clusterwork and dainty dangle earrings.

Cabochon

Nugget

30

BONUS: Cabochon vs. Nugget A cabochon is a stone that’s been polished and shaped but isn’t faceted. A nugget is more textured turquoise, a stone with all its bumps and ridges that appears to have been plucked right out of the mine and popped into the piece. Cheat code: cabochon is convex, nugget is natural.

Put a Pin In It Nothing makes you look more polished and puttogether than a pin. Think about it. Pins are an intentional accessory. You don’t put one on out of habit like your everyday earrings or that one ring you feel naked without, a pin is a purposeful part of your look. And the best part is that they’re varied and versatile, making them one of the easiest and most effective ways to accessorize. Elevate your overalls. Secure your scarf. Pin a little personality on your hatband or the lapel of your jean jacket. Maybe you work it into your wardrobe or maybe you build your outfit around it, either way it sends a message that you’ve got it together and you’ve got it going on!

Every Squash Has a Story If you ever encounter a woman wearing a fabulous squash blossom necklace, we implore you to ask her where she got it. Not only will she be flattered – everyone loves a compliment! – we’re willing to bet our Betz it has an origin story she’s more than happy to share. Inherited it from a beloved grandmother. A token to commemorate a milestone moment; a graduation gift, a wedding bequest, a push present. A souvenir splurge from a spur-of-the-moment road trip. Or, if they’re jewelry junkies like us, maybe they’ll regale you with the tale of what they forwent to get it, like the time we decided the washing machine would have to wait. A squash blossom is an investment piece. It’s something you can love for life (they’ve yet to go out of style in more than 100 years) and it has the potential to become your signature, that memorable statement piece that everyone associates with your style. It’s not a flippant buy. There is something about a squash blossom that speaks to you; there’s a draw, a desire, a destiny even, that sparks when you encounter a squash that was meant for you. It just feels right. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, it’s almost like falling in love. Every squash has a soulmate, and every squash has a story.

Pack Like a Pro Thinking about adding a jewelry junket to your agenda? Well, we’ve been on a few (dozen) in our day, and here’s our expert – or at least experienced – advice on suggested supplies for your sojourn. Magnifying Loop: We’re not evaluating diamonds here, but southwestern statement pieces can be an investment and before you drop some dough, you’d be wise to check for damage/looseness to the bezels and examine the stones for chips, cracks, or possible replacements that may not be authentic to the original. Tape Measure: This is particularly helpful when browsing for belts, but it’s also handy for sizing specimen stones when you’re valuating that big bolo or belt buckle. Hallmark Reference Guide: This may seem over-the-top for your average shopper, but we can’t overemphasize the advantage of being informed. You may discover a deal or avoid being oversold. Bags for your bounty: If the plan is to buy several smaller pieces, we like to take baggies to keep it all sorted and separate until we can organize it in our Treasure Chest. But if you’re looking to go big before you go home, you’re going to want to protect that prized possession; our Turquoise Travel Series is designed specifically to safely secure southwestern styles. A good friend who ‘gets it’: Adventures are always more fun with good company, but if you’re serious about scoring some southwestern statement pieces, you endeavor will be a lot more enjoyable with a cohort who has patience for the hunt. And last but not least, pack that pocketbook!

Life is a Cluster In the world of southwestern-style jewelry, the term “cluster” is both remarkably common and almost comically confounding. A cluster is one of those things that you know it when you see it, but you’d be hard pressed to actually define. At its most basic, it’s a collection of stones combined to achieve an overall aesthetic. It can be less than a dozen stones or it can be more than a hundred. It can be intricately designed or it can be seemingly arbitrarily arranged. Like all artforms, it’s evolved over the years from the classic to the contemporary, but the appeal is evergreen. The cluster cuff will always be covetable and collectible.
