Midnight Cowboy Over the 50 years since its debut, Midnight Cowboy has meant a lot of different things to a lot of different people. In a way, you walk away from it with what you brought into it, whatever that may be. It tells you the story you want it to tell you. For us, it was a story of hope, naïveté, loneliness, disappointment, and eventually, perseverance. Who among us, if even for a fleeting moment, hasn’t dreamed of making it big at one point or another? Dreamed of throwing your apron down, packing your suitcase, and chasing that dream you know is out there.

Maybe that’s what we took away because that’s what we brought in. We did that. Thirty years ago, we put every dollar and dream we had into this idea that we could create clothing unlike anyone else, and live a life doing something we loved. We were hopeful, we were naive. We’ve battled disappointment, and at times it’s been a lonely road, but ultimately we’ve persevered. Midnight Cowboy was also, and perhaps above all, a story of deep friendship. It was about intense devotion to standing by the ones who have stood by you, no matter the cost. That resonated with us, too. And of course, we were impacted by the fashion. From Joe Buck’s pony hide suitcase, to his signature jacket, to the whimsical Western aesthetic that he boldly took with him to the Big Apple, there was an unapologetic element of chasing his dream but remembering his roots. And, well, there’s nothing more Double D Ranch than that. Midnight Cowboy Jacket, Ruth Blouse, City Slicker Hat, Double D Ranch Jewelry, Vintage Double D Ranch Belt

Mr. Midnight Cowboy A New York native transformed into a small-town Texas cowboy, and the result was the role of a lifetime. We drew a great deal of inspiration for this collection from the charismatic and colorful character and costumes of Joe Buck; his pony hide suitcase, his signature fringed jacket, and his cocked-back city slicker cowboy hat. And by some fortuitous relationships we’ve formed over the years, we were fortunate to spend some time with the genius behind Joe Buck, the Midnight Cowboy himself: Jon Voight.

The Academy Award-winning actor was charmingly candid about how the character came to be, and the influence his first major

motion picture has had on his life and career.

DDR: Walk me through from the beginning. How did Midnight Cowboy first come onto your radar? JV: I was doing some work in a regional theatre in Washington, D.C. at the time, and a fellow gave me the book and encouraged me to read it and said, “You should play this role.” Now, how he took my look and my personality at that time, and translated it into the character of Joe Buck, I don’t know. DDR: And at what point did you begin to see yourself in the character? JV: As I got through [the book], I thought it was a marvelous portrait of these two characters and that there was something classic about the piece. I thought I understood it very well, how to make it work; how to make that character who was the center very touching and very entertaining. DDR: At the time, you’d had some success in off-Broadway productions and some indie films, but not a lot of visibility yet in Hollywood. What was it like seeking the lead in your first major motion picture? JV: I pursued the role for quite a while, I believe for more than a year and a half, trying to see if they were going to make the movie, and who was going to make it, and things like that. Many fortuitous events and relationships happened during that time, and I see there was some destiny involved; that I was meant to play that part. DDR: Over the years, Midnight Cowboy has meant many different things to many different people. As the central character and someone so close to the film, what meaning does it hold for you? JV: Midnight Cowboy was groundbreaking in many different areas, and very startling for

people, especially at that time. To me, it was a very powerful story of people who are on the edge of society who don’t have the skills to compete, to be part of the center of society. And yet, this examination would change the way we looked at them. It made them ‘us’. And in Midnight Cowboy, we go on their adventure with them; we care for them, and we want them to have success. We began to empathize with people in that part of society from the time we watched this film, and that was its meaning to me. DDR: Legend has it that upon conclusion of filming, you had a heart-to-heart with director John Schlesinger, and told him something that now seems like profound foreshadowing. What did you say to him, and in hindsight, do you feel the sentiment holds true? JV: I had just come in from shooting the final scenes – me running down the road in Midland, Texas in 100-degree heat – and I walked around the back of this van where there was some shade. And behind this van was John [Schlesinger], red as a beet and sweating. He was in the throws of this fit of artistic anxiety, asking me, “What have we done?!” So, I grabbed him by the shoulders and I said the most outlandish thing I could say in order to calm him down, which was, “We will live the rest of our artistic lives in the shadow of this great masterpiece.” And I’ve made many films since then, and lots of good work since then, and I’ve appreciated the people I’ve worked with, but I think there is truth in what I said. Midnight Cowboy is so powerful and pure in its artistic strivings and achievements that not much could ever supplant it or its mark on our careers. That Jacket Joe Buck’s fringed leather jacket struck a chord with us. It made him stand out as a big fish in a small pond in his hometown, and it made him stand out like a small, lost fish in the Big City. And still, even as it got weathered and worn, he paradoxically wore it as a badge of honor and clung to it like a security blanket. We were inspired to create the Joe Buck Jacket as a wearable reminder to dream big, but stay grounded.

That Bag In the early scenes of Midnight Cowboy, you see an eager and ambitious Joe Buck swinging his pony hide suitcase as he’s making up his mind to make his way in New York City. He’s abandoning his apron and ditching the dirty dishes, cutting ties with the grimy in pursuit of the glamorous. It’s symbolic, it’s significant, and it certainly made an impact on us. When we decided to design a collection around the film, putting a Double D spin on that iconic piece was an absolute must. We fashioned it into both a shopper and a valise handbag, and whatever style you choose, we hope you carry it with the confidence that you can conquer the world.

Pony Up Fashion is taking a walk on the wild side. With cowgirl chic going mainstream, we are seeing an uptick of the animal aesthetic in everything from embellishments to accessories. While leopard is making a strong resurgence in patterns and prints (see page 56), the exotic trend seems to be embracing the more authentic “hairy texture” of pony hide in an array of accessories, from belts to boots to bags. Of course, our Midnight Cowboy collection wouldn’t be complete without a funky, feminine spin on Joe Buck’s signature suitcase (in the form of both a valise and a tote!), but we’ve also incorporated it in edgier and unexpected ways. The Midnight Cowboy collection brings the look to life in strong statement pieces, like a sassy mini skirt, bold button-downs, and a really kickass pair of pony print pants! Time to pony up, gals!

Yeehaw Agenda Cowboy couture is cooler than ever. No longer limited to those on the far West side of the fashion spectrum, whimsical western wear has made a major cross-over into mainstream. While it’s always been somewhat of the signature for country music outlaw, Kacey Musgraves; lately you can spot the style on everyone from Lil Nas X (of “Old Town Road” fame) to rap superstars Post Malone and Cardi B. While you can expect to see the cowboy classics (boots, hats, belt buckles) worked into the looks of style makers everywhere from the stage to the street, the appeal to the Yeehaw Agenda seems to be more in the funky flair -- Nudie Cohn-inspired pantsuits, fringe, over-the-top embroidery, animal prints, and bold color schemes -- a lot of which you’ll find in the Midnight Cowboy collection. Thanks to the eye-catching aesthetics of the trend and the ultra-hip celebrities who have embraced it, #YeehawCouture has morphed into somewhat of a social media sensation, which has generated an influx of interest from a younger demographic that was previously apathetic to the edgy western lifestyle and look. Of course, we’re thrilled to welcome the young and hip into the country-chic fold, but you mamas of daughters might want to keep an eye on your closet, it might be about to get raided for some vintage DDR! Yeehaw!

Serape Siempre We’ve had a long-standing love for the colorful pattern and it’s taking on some unexpected forms in Midnight Cowboy. “Siempre,” which means “always” or “forever” in Spanish, is fitting for two reasons: a) despite it commonly being mistaken as Native American, serape is a Spanish word and a style that is most commonly found in Mexico; and b) it is one of our “always and forever” patterns. We have been designing garments with variations of serape for as long as we can remember; it’s been a staple, collection after collection.

Originally, serape appeared in heavy, woven constructions, primarily worn as shawls in Latin American countries. Over the decades, we have adapted the colorful pattern into prints that bring a whole new versatility to its wearability. We’ve incorporated it into more light-weight fabrics, everything from soft tees to sleepwear. In Midnight Cowboy, we brought it to life in sheer windbreakers and flowing broomstick-style skirts. What can we say? We celebrate serape, siempre.

Seeing Spots Welcome to the jungle. Animal prints are taking the runway by storm, and we’ve fallen in love with the leopard look. The more we played with the playful print, the more we found that leopard is perhaps one of the most versatile, inclusive, “everything and everyone” patterns in all of fashion. It can be casual and it can be refined. It appeals to the young and to the mature and can be worn appropriately by both. It can be implemented in a heavier, textured form, like you would expect in a jacket or boot, and it can be printed on lightweight fabric, like a cotton shift dress or a sassy silk buttondown. It can be the background, it can be the accent, it can be the statement. We’ve heard leopard described as adding an element of “rebellious sensibility” to an ensemble, and well, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Not only are we absolutely in love with the look of it and all the different ways it can be incorporated into design, but it also felt wildly appropriate for Midnight Cowboy considering wildcat Joe Buck was clawing his way to survival in the concrete jungle.

FUN FACT: Have you ever wondered how to distinguish cheetah print from leopard? Cheetah is generally a lighter, yellow-golden background and the spots are solid black and circular. Leopard tends to be a tad darker fur, and the spots are irregularly shaped and form almost a border around a slightly darker shade of fur (these are called “rosettes”). Now you know.

Made-Up for Midnight Matte face, nude lips, and bold eyeliner. Midnight Cowboy is channeling retro-chic. In a lot of ways, Midnight Cowboy is a step outside the box for Double D Ranch. Our aesthetic influence is often derived from western ranches, small southern towns and some first-hand experiences; however, this collection is set back in the psychedelic sixties against the neon backdrop of The Big Apple. Our longtime friend and hair-and-makeup guru, Lisa Martensen, helped us capture the essence of the era and create a look that transports us to another time and place. “I channeled a lot of Veruschka Von Lehndorff,” Martensen said. “She was one of the original ‘supermodels’ and was very popular in the 1960s; her look was one that a lot of women were emulating at the time. It felt appropriate for Midnight Cowboy, for that era and that city.” The key to copping the Midnight Cowboy look is sticking to nudes and neutrals on the face, with a statement-making sweep of bold black eyeliner - winged, if you dare! And, of course, that signature late-sixties hair: long, straight, and parted down the middle.

Rack ’em & Stack ’em Y’all know when it comes to jewelry (well, all accessories, really), our motto has always been “more is more”. Layer up those squash blossoms, put a ring on every finger, and pile on those pins! So, it should come as a shock to absolutely no one that we are on board with the cuff and bangle stacking trend.

Stack up the “sister stones”. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: turquoise and red coral go together like peas and carrots. The two colors compliment each other and they’re often found set in similar Native American styles that aesthetically work well together. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different colored stones. Heck, throw in some lapis and Mother of Pearl if you’ve got it!

The secret to a successful stack: variety. This is one of those subtle tricks that seems obvious when you see it well done, but it’s hard to put your finger on when your stack “just isn’t right” and you’re not sure why: uniformity in a stack will. not. work. You must mix it up. Ideally, you want a variety of all elements – stones, materials, needlepoint beside statement stones – but arguably the most important in achieving an eye-pleasing stack is dimension. Try to avoid layering bracelets of the same width.

Space it out with silver. If you feel like your arm is getting bit overloaded with color, try interspersing your stack with a stamped silver cuff or a slender silver bangle. It’s a great way to add both quantity and dimension without appearing quite so busy.
