Giant: Riata, Fall 2019
2
Welcome to Texas “Welcome to Texas.” Legend has it, this unexpected mansion is the striking sight that greeted Edna Ferber (author of Giant, upon which the film and eventually this collection were based) when she arrived at her destination in the Lone Star State. She had traversed down to South Texas to research for the novel, and she reportedly stayed here, at the historic Richard King II Mansion. In every direction, you can look at the surroundings, the landscape, and have no doubt you’re in Texas. Until your gaze meets The Big House. The Eastern style and the sheer enormity of it make it eye-popping against the pancake-flat Texas coastal plains. In a lot of ways, it was symbolic. Not just of the obvious “Everything is bigger in Texas” trope, but even more so the climate of the state at the time, when new money was colliding with the old way of life, and suddenly no one was sure how to make it all fit together. Decades ago, the sight caught Edna off guard. Just a few months ago, it caught us off guard, too. It truly is a sight to behold. “As soon as the house came into view, Audrey and I both said ‘wow’, recalls designer Cheryl McMullen. “I looked at her, she looked at me, and we almost simultaneously said, ‘We need to shoot here.’ This is Texas history, this is Giant history, we need to tell this story and we ought to tell it here.” We knew it was going to be a difficult story to tell. This collection draws heavily on Mexican influence, from the colors, to the silhouettes, to the accents. Ostensibly, it doesn’t make sense juxtaposed against the backdrop of this enormous Victorian home. But the thing is, it does make sense. Because it’s the truth. This awe-inspiring mansion existed side-by-side with the much more simple structures that were home to the Mexican ranch hands, who had a critical role in tending the ranch (and in Texas history in general), and played a powerful role in the novel and film. this page & front cover: Outside Pasqual’s Jacket, Homespun Dress, Rita Blanca Scarf, Riata Hat, Almost Famous Boot, Double D Ranch Jewelry
The Mexican presence is authentic. Shooting the Riata Collection here felt genuine. This place is an important part of the Giant story, a part of the Texas story, and now a part of our story. A story that needed to be told. Right here.

“Texas is a country in its own. It’s made up of half Mexico/half United States, but completed mixed. I don’t mean to draw a generalization, but it is a place, a territory, that’s really made up of all these encounters, you know?” - Gael Garcia Bernal

Mexican Influence You’d be hard-pressed to try to define Texas without acknowledging the presence of Mexican influence. It enhances the clothing, the culture, the cuisine, and everything in between. After all, Texas was a part of Mexico before it was a Republic. “Especially in South Texas, where we were born and raised, we grew up surrounded by Mexican culture interwoven with classic Texana,” says designer Cheryl McMullen. “It’s something I’ve always enjoyed and admired, particularly in terms of fashion, and it’s been peppered throughout numerous Double D Ranch collections over the years.” Riata is our take on the stunning style elements we love from Old Mexico, incorporating colorful adornments, Matador-inspired charro rope soutache embroidering, and the intricate dangling style of the Mazuhua jewelry. It features silhouettes that feel simultaneously fierce and feminine, with a heavy presence of bold blacks and deep reds and muted metallics that came together in a way that feels both edgy and timeless.

Stone Camp Blanket Jacket Even if you’re not really sure what a Camp Bed Blanket is, we’re willing to bet this looks familiar to you somehow. And if you are sure what one is, we’re willing to bet this brings back a little bit of nostalgia. Authenticity has always been of utmost importance to us. We strive to stay true to colors, patterns and fabrics which tell the story that inspired us. Our Stone Camp Blanket Jacket replicates the woolen blankets previously found on virtually every camp bed throughout the country, all the way up to the Adirondacks. The Anglo mills manufacturing the blankets drew design inspiration and influence from Native American weavings. In turn, Native Americans adopted the blankets, and began to include them as important elements in potlatch ceremonies.

The Reign of Red Red is ruling the runway right now, and Riata is giving it life. Red is a strong color. It evokes emotions all over the spectrum: love, fire, rage, passion, power. Not only is it on-trend, but it also fits perfectly into the fierce femininity of this collection. We have snuck the hue into subtle stand-alone stitching, worked it into embellishments of elegant embroidery, and dared it to speak for itself in the show-stopping Hondo Vest.

Adore the Matador Maybe you’re not quite equipped for waving a red cape, but you can definitely conquer “daytime to date night” in the elevated embroideries in the Riata collection. The large scale monochromatic contrast floral, the signature silhouettes, and the stark charro rope soutache embroidery embellishments channel the Mexican matador look. Talk about fierce and feminine.

Mazahua Earrings A signature Mexican style originally inspired by, and sometimes referred to as, Frida Khalo jewelry, the Mazahua earring is characterized by its intricacy, in its metalwork and micro-beading, often accompanied by a wide silver arc accented with dangles. Mazahua jewelry is traditionally chosen as wedding-day adornment, as it is revered among the most elegant of Mexican accessories.

This catalog, as it exists, would not have been possible without the Wyatt Ranches family. Our appreciation extends beyond acknowledging their hospitality and giving thanks for granting us access. We feel genuinely indebted to them, as lifelong fans of Giant and moreover as Texans, for their meticulous dedication to the restoration of the King Mansion. They have mindfully, painstakingly, and beautifully preserved a piece of our history. No praise is too high and no gratitude too great.
