Come Away With Me: Traveling Show Collection, Summer 2022

Welcome to the Traveling Show Bustling boardwalks. Salty seaside air. Attractions that awe and amaze. The Traveling Show collection is an homage to all those elements of the American story; the entertainment of an earlier era and the simplicity of the suspension of disbelief. Each of the 2022 Come Away With Me collections aimed to take you on a journey alongside us, and in a sense, to experience a few of our anecdotes and have a front-row seat to some of the scenes that shaped us. This summer collection is inspired by the colorful vibrance and livelihood of turn-of-the-century tourist attractions and all the buzz generated by the boardwalk and the big top tents. It has bold undertones of Americana splashed with circusy oranges and yellows for an overall aesthetic that is undeniably summer. There are nods to show bills and carnival games and the daring diving horses of old school Atlantic City. Traveling Show is a tip of the hat to trailblazers and innovators. To risk-takers and history-makers. To one inspiring daredevil who lost her eyesight but never lost her vision. Life’s a circus, ladies, give’em a show. And always, always dare to take the leap.

The Best Things in Life are Free Money can’t buy you love. Or happiness. Or this scarf. With every collection, we design two distinct scarves. One is the signature scarf that accompanies the collection and is an amalgamation of the design elements that appear in the apparel throughout. It’s commemorative in a way. The other is designed to complement the collection in a more subtle and universal way, staying true to the color palette and perhaps incorporating a single image or pattern. The thing about the latter, is that you can’t buy it. We gift these scarves as a token of gratitude with every qualifying order from its respective collection. Ironically, they’ve kind of taken on a life of their own, and because they’re not for sale, they’ve become a unique sort of collector’s item and an unspoken sisterhood for those in the know.

Sonora Carver & Diving Horses Trailblazer. Risk taker. Entertainer. Advocate. There are a number of admirable adjectives you could attribute to the legendary Sonora Webster Carver, but ‘unbelievably resilient’ might be her most defining. The Georgia-born beauty always had an affinity for equines, even skipping school on occasion to sneak in a ride, and at 19, it was that love, her adventurous spirit, and an advertisement placed by William “Doc” Carver seeking an “attractive young woman who can swim and dive; likes horses; desires to travel” that led her to New Jersey where she forged a career as one of the first female horse divers. Sonora, who later married Doc Carver’s son, Al, made her first public dive – a breathtaking 40-foot plunge – on May 20, 1924 and ascended the ranks of attractions in the epicenter of entertainment at the time, the illustrious Atlantic City Pier, among the likes of traveling acts such as Annie Oakley and eventually Frank Sinatra. Tragedy struck in 1931 when an unbalanced horse dive caused Sonora to hit the water with her eyes open which detached her retinas and caused permanent blindness. Remarkably, she was undeterred; she learned Braille and continued to dive for 11 more years. As Sonora’s sister and fellow diver, Arnette, put it, “Once you were on the horse, there really wasn’t much to do but hold on.” When World War II deflated the entertainment industry, Sonora and Al moved to New Orleans where she became a typist at the Lighthouse for the Blind and an advocate for the visually impaired. In 1961, she published a memoir, A Girl and Five Brave Horses, which was later adapted (in Sonora’s opinion, loosely and inaccurately) into the 1991 film Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken. Sonora died in 2003 at the age of 99.

Life’s a Circus, Put on a Show If you can’t see it from across the street, what’s the point in wearing it? That’s long been a tongue-in-cheek credo among us DDR gals, and while it might be a tad hyperbolic, we are firm believers in living your life out loud, and that includes your wardrobe. They say your outfit is your armor, but it can also be so much more than that. When you get dressed, you make a decision about how your day/night is going to go. Donning something impossible to ignore – perhaps a killer pair of kicks, a bold biker, some statement jewelry – reframes all your interactions in a way, both the anticipated conversations and the unexpected compliments. Clothing yourself in something that makes you feel fabulous is showing up in a whole different way. There’s not a lot we can control in life, but a good outfit and a good attitude is your best bet at a good day.

Summer Shorties

Nothing says summer like sundresses and shortie boots. Don’t get us wrong, we consider shortie boots to be seasonless – tuck your skinnies into a pair, let them peek out from under your bootcut jeans or your broom skirt – but in the summer in the south, they’re an absolute necessity. Long-shafted boots can trap a whole lot more heat than you may realize and suddenly, you’re in sweat city. Shortie boots are the key to give your look that cowgirl kick in a way that keeps you cool. All the style, none of the sweat!

Boardwalk Empire Even if you’ve never stepped foot on an actual boardwalk, the mention of one still evokes imagery and sparks your senses. Coneys, cotton candy, and saltwater taffy. The victorious ding of conquered carnival games, the thrilled shrieks from open-air amusement rides, the bustle of troves of tourists taking sunny seaside strolls. Amusingly, the “grandfather of boardwalks”, the one in Atlantic City, was originally constructed to reduce the amount of sand that tourists were tracking into the train cars and hotels from their beach day adventures. Soon vendors and entertainment attractions populated the wide wooden walkway and what was once a beachfront barrier became the place to be for East Coast travelers and locals alike. From Kemah to Coney Island and South Carolina to Santa Cruz, boardwalks still have a stronghold in the landscape of tourist attractions along America’s coasts. While the more extreme acts, like horse diving and sideshow oddities, might be a thing of the past, the appeal remains; restaurants and bars (even some casinos) pepper the walkways, you can still take a spin on an old familiar ferris wheel, and the people watching is absolutely unparalleled.
