The reality of a ranchman is often feast or famine. Especially in the days of Walker Riddle, our greatgreat-grandfather who is the inspiration impetus for this collection; life was short and the droves were long, and when an outfit took to the Chisolm Trail, it was anyone’s guess how it would go. But no risk, no reward, right? It’s that moxie, that guts and grit, that willingness to bet it all – perhaps that’s what makes us feel so connected to a man we never even got the chance to meet.

There is a stark difference between being a cowboy and being a cattleman. As a cowboy, you learn the ways of the lifestyle; skills, to rope and ride and rodeo. In the simplest sense, being a quote-unquote cowboy can be as superficial as an outfit and as involved as weekend rodeos. Being a cattleman means commitment. It means investment; in your land, in your livestock, in yourself. Nothing is guaranteed and everything is a gamble. And it’s a full-time, around-the-clock job.

There’s a lore to the long-ago cattlemen that is alluring and inspiring, almost enviable. Ambition finds freedom in long days on dusty trails, living life under the open sky. Our great-great-grandaddy was one of the originals, and this collection aims to capture life through his lens. We don’t know as much about Walker Riddle as we’d like to, he was an ancestor on Granny Eloise’s side and most of what we gleaned about him came from poring over faded photographs and handwritten captions, studying his hat, his horse, his saddle, his stance, even his comrades. Still, he left a lasting legacy, one that feels legendary and almost larger than life, of a drover on the famous Chisolm Trail. This collection is a tribute to him, to our roots in ranching, and to our family heritage as a whole. It celebrates what is wonderful and romantic about the Western way of life. The palettes are earthy, the prints are authentic to the imagery of the era, and the hints of glamour are a nod to the riches of the ranchman when the gamble paid off.

This throwback style is really having a moment. Originating in Canada, the knitting technique dates back to the mid 19th Century among the peoples of the Cowichan Valley. Over the centuries, it’s seen ebbs and flows in popularity, but in the 1960s and ‘70s there was a pervasive presence of these Western-themed knits in earthy tones and, well, these cardigans are making a comeback.

It’s as much to keep folks out as it is to keep animals in. That’s how this weird-looking wire twisted its way into America’s story. Barbed wire fences became the unintended icon of Manifest Destiny, establishing clear boundaries around a landowner’s perimeters, and preventing passage via shortest distance for cattle herders of the time. Native Americans coined it “Devil’s Rope” because it often ensnared wild buffalo who then either died of starvation or infection, rendering them relatively useless to a people who committed to using every part of any bison they killed. Upgrades and evolutions have made barbed wire strong, sustainable, and relatively safe while still serving its Technically,purpose.it’snamed “barbed wire” for its signature spiked barbs that transformed a wire fence from a feat of strength to a force to be reckoned with, although almost all of us were into our pre-teen years before we learned that, because no matter what region of Texas twang you grew up with, it was pronounced “bobwire”.

Our Double D Ranch flagship store in Fort Worth is going to facilitate that to a degree we’ve only dreamed of until now. There’s a genuineness and an authenticity to the town of Fort Worth that makes it the perfect place to showcase one-of-a-kind wares. Previously only available online, the flagship store will allow for in-person access to a wide variety of fabulous finds, from rare vintage chaps and spurs and Navajo weavings, to Western artwork and artifacts, to furniture we’ve either found, fabricated, or repurposed. It will be a curated collection of items relevant and significant to the lifestyle, like a saddle ridden in one of Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West shows, Garcia spurs, and ranch-worn bandanas. Whether it’s a longhorn-mounted mirror you’ve been seeking for years or concho-studded chaps you didn’t even know you needed, you can bet your boots the Fort Worth showroom will be full of gems you won’t find just anywhere.

For reasons we can’t quite articulate, horn décor has always fascinated us. There’s a boldness to them that’s fierce yet alluring, rugged and reminiscent of the romance of the West. Like lots of our little obsessions, we always have our eye out for authentic and well-crafted horn pieces, from classic Victorian mounts to saloonstyle mirrors. And, much like our other obsessions, it took digging into the DDR Design Archive to realize just how many of these magnificent finds we’ve accumulated along the way. Naturally, these vintage beauties will have a new home in the Fort Worth flagship store – because what better place for longhorns than Cowtown! – until they find their forever home with you.

Fort Worth is an integral and influential part of the landscape of not only the geography and history of Texas, but the entire western lifestyle. Once a critical stop on the Chisolm Trail – the last stop for supplies on the way up to the cattle sale, and the first town to welcome you with their wares when you came back cash-heavy – Fort Worth has since cemented itself as a major metropolis while maintaining a vibe that feels authentic, old school, and ‘true Texan’. Even as the population approaches the one-million mark, you can still see a twicedaily cattle drive of longhorn steers through the Fort Worth Stockyards. It’s established a foothold as a destination town all its own, kind of a “rodeo meets Rodeo Drive” blend of live music and luxury, honkytonks and high-end shopping. In so many ways, Fort Worth mirrors how we view ourselves as a brand. And who knows, maybe it’s just in our DNA; maybe it was a long-foretold fate that we’d be putting down roots right where Walker Riddle once roamed. Here’s hoping Cowtown is as kind to us as it once was to him!

Accessories are a way to express yourself and when it comes to inlay, it’s not only an appreciation of the image, but the artform and the artisans.

The late lapidary legends Helen and Lincoln Zunie were a collaborative couple of Zuni artisans who were prolific in their creation of incredibly intricate inlay pieces. Most of their work utilizes stones of turquoise, shell, mother of pearl, and black onyx, in conjunction with sterling silver to create images of Hereford bulls and horse profiles that marry their talent and technique with the Western vibe that was all the rage during the mid 20th Century, their peak of production. Like many of the greats, their work has become exponentially appreciated posthumously and is highly coveted among collectors. DDR is pleased to share their collection of belt buckles and bolos intricately handcrafted by the talented team, beauty this bold is too remarkable to keep to ourselves.

We put a little bit of our personality in everything we create, and this time, we were able to put our people in it, too. We custom designed this particular print as our own Texas spin on traditional ledger art, referencing centuries old stockyard bills of sale for the bustling business of cattle trade that put Fort Worth on the map. Because this whole scrapbook-themed series of collections is deeply personal to us and inspired by characters in our own lives, we thought it only appropriate that the buyers and sellers and brands represented people that mean the most to us. Walker, of course, was our great-great-grandaddy, but is also one of Audrey’s sons. You’ll find Presley’s name, who is the darling daughter of Hedy, and Cheryl’s son Jack’s brand is on the steers; all of our kids and grandkids are included as well as their personal brands. Any McMullen woman will tell you that her children shaped who she is, and what better nod to them than a chic shoutout like this.

If cowboys were cool, cattlemen were king. And there’s nothing royalty – whether made-up or monarchy – loves more than partying among heir peers. Legend and literary lore allude to unspoken, unofficial, and invitation-only gatherings of the elites of the industry, a who’s who of the cattle trading world, if you will. These days, you’ll only find evidence of official associations and restaurants and the occasional rodeo committee, but it was a far more romantic reverie of Cattlemen’s Clubs that inspired the statement pieces that nod to their name.
