Giant: Wildcatter, Trans-Season 2019
2
Giant: Wildcatter If you haven’t seen Giant, you should. It has EVERYTHING. It’s got Rock Hudson, it’s got Liz Taylor, it’s got James freaking Dean. *swoon* (Fun fact: It’s the last film he ever made.) It’s got old money and new money, it’s got grit and glamour, it’s got privilege and humility. It bucks family traditions, it disrupts social structures, and it definitely challenges cultural injustices. It proves money can’t buy happiness. It has family feuds, and fistfights, and oh my word, does it have fashion. Giant was the inspiration behind this fall’s collection. Not only does it embody so much of the Western vibe we so adore, but it also takes you on a journey with the characters. Throughout their evolvement, you love them and hate them and back again, but somewhere along the way, you identify with them. Giant is so chock-full of characters and themes that it gave us design fuel for an entire collection, and we hope to do it justice. We’ve broken it down to mini-collections, the first of which is this one: The Wildcatter, an ode to Jett Rink and James Dean. It features a heavy presence of denim and up-styled versions of workwear, it plays with prairie prints, and it premieres a collection of one-of-a-kind quilt jackets. Wildcatter is heavily influenced by Jett Rink but also channels a character that lives within all of the Double D Ranch tribe. You don’t fit in the “box”. You’re not out to break rules, but you’re sure as hell not abiding by everyone else’s “just because”. You’ve got a vision for your life and maybe a rogue way of getting there — one that may not make a lick of sense to anyone else. And you know what? It doesn’t have to.

You’re not all that concerned with the Haves and the Have Nots, but you know where you stand, you know your worth, and you know where you’re headed. And by God, you’re gonna show them all. 3

More Than a Movie I’ve long since wanted to do a Giant-inspired collection. The film has always been atop my list of all-time favorite movies, but it also evokes emotion and nostalgia in me. Growing up, Daddy teasingly (and lovingly) called me “Luz”, because I was proud and protective of the ranch, and because I might’ve been a boss long before I led a company. But Giant is a classic. It’s an epic. It’s Texas’ “Gone with the Wind.” And you simply can’t mess with a classic; you can’t recreate it and you certainly can’t top it. As I dove in, I realized I didn’t want to: the actual costumes wouldn’t resonate with my customers. We had to rethink it and make it our own. So, I flipped the lens through which I was envisioning the pieces and the process. Rather than what was on the screen driving what came out on my sketchpad, I imagined and created as if Double D Ranch was designing the costumes, dressing these characters and their Giant (pun intended) personalities.

Quilt Quest Designing these jackets fulfilled a few different design desires. First and foremost, making something useful out of something forgotten seemed like a thing Jett would do. From a design perspective, quilts were an obvious choice. I can just picture him grabbing an old quilt from the bunkhouse (without asking, of course) and fashioning it into a jacket, tied closed because who has the time for buttons? (Fun fact: the Warner Bros. costume vest Jett wore, actually did have make-shift ties in place of missing buttons.) Jett was resourceful and the type to “make do”, which is what we used to call it before “upcycling” was a thing. But these days, upcycling is very much a thing. It’s been trending upward for years in areas of interior design and décor, and lately, it has permeated the fashion industry, and we are here for it. The concept of taking something old, which has outlived its original purpose, and fashioning it into something new and lovely and once again purposeful, well, that just feels very innately Double D Ranch. Quilts also feel innately Double D Ranch, in a way, as they tend to conjure sentiments of Americana, “down home”, and even the Old West, all of which are a part of the soul of DDR. Fortuitously, patchwork and quilting have also been a recently emerging trend on runways. All of these elements kind of came together to complete the vision for the quilted jackets in Wildcatter. So began my quilt quest. Every single Bunkhouse Blanket jacket in this collection is one-of-a-kind because each jacket is made from a different vintage quilt top that predates the 1960s. The quilts were all hand-selected by me and then hand-embroidered and mended, and transformed into these wonderfully unique garments. These collectors jackets are one-of-a-kind and once-in-a-lifetime. Collect yours.

Doin’ Your Best James Dean What would Giant be without James Dean? Hell, what would Hollywood and American history and pop culture be without James Dean? The man was the epitome of an icon. He was gorgeous, he was talented, he was irreverent. He was an enthralling and complex character, on and off the screen. He stole America’s heart with a Pepsi commercial and broke it with his tragic untimely death. His career was remarkably short (hard to believe he only starred in three movies), and yet his influence is eternal. It was important to us to really incorporate the James Dean spirit into Wildcatter. (See? More than half a century later, he’s still influencing.) We wanted – no, needed – a windmill to make this shoot feel accurate. When we learned we would get to use the actual windmill from the set of Giant, the one Jett Rink used to begin pacing out the boundaries of Little Reata, you cannot imagine the full-body chills. Then, it was about capturing his essence by recreating his iconic poses; the ones you’ve seen hundreds of times, the ones that come to mind when you hear the name, James Dean. Cooly reclining on an automobile. Casually resting a rifle on his shoulders. Lackadaisically leaning on a fence post. Essentially, being effortlessly badass. We’re not the first to do it and we won’t be the last, but we did do it. We gave James Dean the Double D Ranch treatment, and it feels on point. Because after all, when we’re being our baddest, raddest selves, aren’t we all just doing our best James Dean? If You Are Going To Do The Dean, You Gotta Do The Hat If you’re committed to doing your best James Dean, you oughta have our Wildcatter Hat. It should go without saying that this topper was inspired by the actual one Dean wore in the movie; I mean, does it not give you instant flashbacks to all the iconic photos of JD in it? We started with this very 1950s-era classic silhouette, and took some creative liberties in roughing it up with a little grease and oil and dirt to give it a lived-in and well-loved look to make it ranch ready. Then we adorned it with a traditional grosgrain hatband and a strip of distressed cornflower blue calico for that “been wearing it forever” kind of feel. We’re mighty proud of how it turned out.

Charmed, I’m Sure We’re taking charms in a whole new direction. Or, really, back in an old direction. Who doesn’t remember (or maybe still wear) their beloved charm bracelet full of tiny, jingly mementos of birthdays past and summer vacations and favorite hobbies? Every charm had a story, of where you found it, or why you got it, or who gave it to you. That’s where we’re headed. Our charms (ok, technically, tags) have skyrocketed over the past year, and have kind of taken on a life of their own as this emblem representing your love for Double D and your place in our quirky little clan. And we like that about y’all. We were inspired. We are teaming up with the incredibly talented artisans at Peyote Bird Jewelry to create Fred Harvey-style tags from momentous Double D Ranch occasions, like the Vegas meet-up, and the one at Trudy’s Wild Rose in Albuquerque, and of course, there is a tag to represent visiting the Mothership. These pieces are handmade and designed to be not only beautiful, but meaningful. They are collectibles; tangible reminders of good times that can adorn your necklaces (in bulk, you can never have too many) and your keychains and even your purses, saddlebags, and carry-ons.

Hand Selected Statements Perhaps a little-known fact about the vintage jewelry that is featured in our collections, catalogs, and online offerings: it is 100% hand-picked by us, every single piece. We work with pawn brokers and dealers, but we also just keep an eye out for it on all of our adventures and excursions. It is all one-of-a-kind and either vintage or Old Pawn. We only present you pieces that speak to us, and that we would consider adding to our own personal collections. And if it isn’t vintage? It’s Peyote Bird Jewelry. These talented artisans out of Santa Fe turn our design visions into hand-crafted wearable works of art, like our beloved Wolf Pack tags.

Black Gold “Black Gold” is what many Texans have affectionately nicknamed crude oil. (And aptly so, considering its monetary value and how people flocked to Texas in hopes of finding it, not unlike the California/Alaska gold rush.) To us, black simply is gold – or rather, golden. It is just so ubiquitous and timeless and honestly, essential, to fashion. Regardless of season or collection, black always seems to find a way to make itself right at home at Double D Ranch; whether it’s the bold accenting to an otherwise colorful garment, or the solid and subtle canvas upon which vibrant embroidery comes to life.

An enormous thanks to Wyatt Ranches and their vaqueros at the Little Reata Division, for allowing us the privilege to photograph on the iconic set of the film, Giant, in Marfa, Texas.
