Come Away With Me: Wild Horses Colleciton, Spring 2022
Wild Horses Wanderlust is a powerful thing. It’s an innate force that courses within you. It’s a longing to roam and run without restraint. It’s a spirit strong and wild and free. Like wild horses. The desire to go, do, and see has been a source of design inspiration in many of DDR’s collections and it persists into the 2022 Come Away With Me collections, a series of spring and summer designs influenced not so much by the places we want to go, but the kind of travel we daydream about. The first iteration, Wild Horses, was sparked by the inherent uninhibitedness that wild horses embody, that spirit that compels the likes of Garth Brooks and the Rolling Stones to sing songs about them; it channels that yearning to immerse yourself entirely in nature and break the ties that bind you, to roam without restriction or responsibility. (C’mon, we all fantasize about it from time to time.) Wild Horses is a seasonless collection, featuring strong saturated oranges balanced with bold turquoises and complemented with the gorgeous greens that have been pervasive in recent seasons. It celebrates the unbridled beauty of an unbroken horse in both pattern and print, pays tribute to our family’s long held belief in the luck of a horseshoe (turned right side up, of course), and showcases the talent of our collaborating artist, Peggy Judy. The term “wild horses” evokes a certain image and emotion, one of freedom, tenacity, and a life without limits. May we all greet the new year with that same strength of spirit, that relentless passion, that resistance to being broken. We’re all wild horses at heart.

The Wild West Gone are the days of gunslingers and saloons, but on the wide-open ranges of west Nevada, wild horses remain. The citizens in and around Dayton, Nevada are no strangers to seeing the random rogue horse meandering through the neighborhood. Nevada, like Texas, is primarily comprised of “open range” land – in fact, nearly 85% of Nevada is public land, either state or federally owned – which means livestock have the right to roam, and if you’re not enthused about having them wandering your property, it’s your responsibility to fence them out. Native to the region for centuries, these horses represent nearly every color and pattern in the equine world, and occasionally you can spot a descendant of the original wild mustangs with zebra-like stripes on their legs. It was in this region that we were fortunate to spend a couple of days photographing the Wild Horses collection, complete with unimpeded cameos of the wild horses themselves. While we are lifelong horse people ourselves, our interaction has been largely with trained quarter horses, so observing these majestic creatures truly in the wild, self-sorted into family bands protected by and deferring to an alpha, was an unexpectedly moving experience. Their strength. Their speed. Their singular focus on survival. There’s an element of awe, and even envy, to their entirely unfettered nature.

“You occasionally see one, and it’s the thrill of a lifetime. But mostly all you ever see is a cloud of dust after they are gone. It’s their stubborn ability to survive that makes them so remarkable.” – Velma “Wild Horse Annie” Johnston

Wild Horse Preservation League As animal lovers and free spirits, the idea of wild horses with the freedom to run and roam seems pretty idyllic. But it’s not a concept without complications. The Wild Horse Preservation League is doing their best to combat them. The WHPL is a non-profit organization formed in 2001 dedicated to the protection of these wild horses and committed to educating citizens in the community how to safely coexist without harmfully interfering. They rely on donations to provide veterinary care to injured or ill horses, execute documentation practices that help track the movement and grouping of the horses, and administer carefully monitored birth control to foster healthy reproduction without overpopulation. Marty Wright, a wild horse photographer and a Director for the WHPL, hosted our visit to the range and explained some of the plights facing these horses, including droughts and the recently expanded Highway 50 which has resulted in an increase of horse-vehicle collisions and a greater need for funds to cover vet bills. After being in the presence of these incredible animals, we felt compelled to contribute, so a portion of the proceeds from Wild Horses-patterned pieces (Wild Horses Dress, Top, and Pant) will be donated back to the WHPL to help further their mission. Learn more about what the organization does and how you can do your part at wildhorsepl.org. Because as Marty put it, “These horses belong to no one, but they belong to everyone.”

“Wild women are an unexplainable spark of life. They ooze freedom and seek awareness, they belong to nobody but themselves yet give a piece of who they are to everyone they meet. If you have met one, hold on to her, she’ll allow you into her chaos but she’ll also show you her magic.” – Nikki Rowe

The Art of Peggy Judy It’s a good feeling to honor someone whose art has inspired you. It’s an even better feeling to collaborate with them. “The paintings of a Colorado artist named Peggy Judy influenced a lot of elements in this collection,” said DDR Designer Cheryl McMullen. “The spirited horse, the color combinations, the whole vibe. Peggy is still actively creating art, so we reached out to her to see if she’d be interested in collaborating on this collection, and fortunately, she agreed. Most of the horse images and prints you see throughout Wild Horses are adaptations of her artwork.” Peggy has spent much of her life surrounded by horses, married to an equine veterinarian as well as raising and breeding horses, so she has a genuine connection to appreciation for them, which is evident in her portraits; however, her portfolio spans all aspects of the lifestyle, in a style categorized as ‘contemporary western’. We encourage you to peruse her entire catalog of work at PeggyJudyFineArt.com.

Horse’n Around: Bolos If you’re not already embracing the beauty of bolos, it’s high time you start. And here’s why. You can express yourself. One of the really fun things about a bolo is that artisans tend to get a little creative and personalized with the slides. Maybe it’s a mosaic inlay horse, maybe it’s a vintage coin, maybe it’s a sterling silver longhorn or – our current obsession – a fully functioning spur with spinning rowels and a big ol’ hunk of turquoise. You do you. It doesn’t have to be big to be bold. Bolos are an unexpected (and underrated!) accessory. They make a statement whether they’re dainty or dramatic; the compliments are coming either way. Wear it how you want. Much like a scarf, there is inherent versatility with a bolo. Slide it high up to the neck for a traditional look. Rock it low and loose more like a necklace pendant. Heck, you can even fashion it as a hatband. It’s like three accessories in one.

Paint in Pattern and Print Trend reports are heading toward all things horses, and well, that’s right in our wheelhouse. “I was already invested in designing the Wild Horses collection before I read that horse motifs might be headed to mainstream fashion,” Cheryl said. “So that lit a whole different spark in me. How can I diversify? How can I think outside the box, beyond the images of horses and horseshoes? I’ve long loved animal-inspired prints and patterns, and so I thought, ‘Let’s adapt the aesthetic of a paint pony.’ Which we ended up loosely interpreting into a print and also incorporating it into accent patches of hair-on hide.” The print is a Western spin on a classic cheetah print, morphing more towards the markings of a paint pony, particularly (if we’re getting technical with it) that of an Overo Paint, characterized by sharp, irregular markings with a horizontal orientation. It’s simultaneously bold and neutral, timeless and seasonless, and it’s the perfect punctuation to a collection channeling ‘western and wild’.
