Ottoman Heritage Day Tours 2011 In and around Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki & Ataturk Museum – Half Day tour Pick up from your hotel to begin the sightseeing tour of Thessaloniki. You will have the opportunity to see the White Tower, the main landmark of the city, the Helexpo fairgrounds, the university campus, the Galerius Arch, the Rotunda monument, the Citadel and the City Walls, from where you will have a marvelous view of Thessaloniki! During your tour, there will be a stop at the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk which, today, houses the Turkish Consulate and was recently announced to become a Monument of the City. Other Ottoman monuments in the city include Bey Hamam, Yeni Cami, Bezesteni Market and Alatza Imaret Cami.
Yenije Tour - Half-day tour Giannitsa (then called Yenije) was an important center in the Ottoman period, and several important monuments survive: the tombs of Gazi Evrenos (a 19th-century substitute for the original) and Gazi Ahmed Bey, the Great Mosque, the Army Mosque, the hammam of Evrenos, and the Clocktower, which have been declared historical monuments by the Greek Archaeological Service. This city can also be combined with a visit to the Museum of Pella, the capital of Ancient Macedonia and birthplace of Alexander the Great.
Kavala – Full Day Tour Pick up from your hotel and drive to Kavala, following the Egnatia highway, built on the path of the Roman ‘Via Egnatia’. Passing by the two lakes of Koroni and Volvi and the village of Asprovalta, we will optionally visit the famous statue of Amphipolis, to visit the Lion statue. Later, we arrive in Kavala, optional stop for lunch. A short tour around the town follows, where you may see the impressive Roman Aqueduct, the recently restored Imaret, the Mohamed Ali Konak and the Halil Bey Cami. Early in the evening, we drive back to Thessaloniki and your hotel.
