In this spirit of renewal and learning, March has been a month that everyone here at Doug Tarry Homes has been eagerly awaiting. We have been anticipating the release of Doug Tarry’s latest contribution to the world of sustainable living, his new book titled “A Builder’s Guide to Net Zero Homes”. This publication is more than just a book; it’s a manifesto of Doug’s deep-seated belief in and commitment to building homes that are not just dwellings, but futures secured against the changing climate and energy landscapes.

Upon it’s release, each member of our team, no matter what their role, was gifted a copy. But Doug’s generosity didn’t stop at the distribution of his book. He took it upon himself to lead a comprehensive boot camp for all staff members, delving deep into the core knowledge and principles of sustainable home building. This boot camp, designed to unfold in two parts, is a blend of serious learning and light-hearted moments, featuring Doug’s humorous anecdotes and stories from his journey in the home building industry. It’s an educational journey without the pressure of an exam at the end, but with the promise of invaluable insights and knowledge.

Solar Eclipse in Elgin County

Elgin County is located directly in the path of totality for the upcoming April 8th total solar eclipse. If you live or work in Elgin County, you can view the eclipse right where you are. If you live outside Elgin County, our four ports (Port Burwell, Port Bruce, Port Stanley and Port Glasgow) are all great viewing opportunities. Alternatively, the John E. Pearce Provincial Park in Wallacetown has public open spaces and parking where you can experience the eclipse.

Recipe of the Month

Strawberry Burrata Salad

Ingredients

1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/3 cup balsamic vinegar

1 tablespoon honey

1 pound strawberries, trimmed and halved

1/4 cup pine nuts

5 ounces baby arugula

1/4 cup small basil leaves

1 (8-ounce) ball burrata, room temperature

Kosher salt and cracked black pepper

Crostini for serving

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 300°F. Whisk together olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and honey in a medium bowl until emulsified. Add strawberries to bowl, toss to coat with dressing, and let marinate 15 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, spread pine nuts on a rimmed baking sheet and toast in oven until lightly browned, about 15 minutes, shaking pan occasionally so nuts toast evenly. Let nuts cool before using.

3. Toss arugula and basil together and strew across a platter. Place burrata in center, and gently break open at top, to expose cream and mozzarella inside. Spoon macerated strawberries and dressing over arugula. Scatter pine nuts on top, season with salt and pepper, and serve with crostini.

Spring greetings from your Customer Care Team!

As we trend toward warmer weather it’s a great time for you to review some spring maintenance for your home. As always, check and clean your ERV filters and core, as well as replace the furnace filter if dirty. Keep your home healthy and breathing well! Please feel free to reach out to our team if you need us to show or explain this again.

If you shut off your exterior hose bibs for the winter as advised, remember to ensure the exterior bibs are closed before turning the interior valves back on. Again, if you require any assistance for locating the bib shut offs, please let us know. These are generally located near the main water shut off, but can vary model to model and depending on when your home was constructed. Take a walk around the exterior of your home. Have a look at your eaves, exhaust and intake vents, check that they are clear of debris. Check humidity levels indicated on you ERV control head.

For homeowners that will be getting sod and driveways this season, please know this does requires some patience. Along with living in some dust for a period of time, DTL does understand that it can be a challenge to secure contractors for fences, decks, and concrete work. Remember, you cannot undertake any landscaping until final grade and sod are complete. If you are looking for an estimated time of completion for these items on your lot, please reach out to seasonal@dougtarryhomes.com after May 15. Keep in mind these timelines are very weather dependent and we have multiple developments to service. We’ll get there!

A message from our President Reflections on Milestones

I am blessed to be reaching three separate yet significant milestones in my life all within a matter of weeks.

Recently, I received printed copies of my book “From Bleeding Edge to Leading Edge: A Builders Guide to Net Zero Homes.” This is the culmination of a fur and a half year journey of discovery on the path of continual improvement as I laid out where we are at as a company, where the industry is and where we need to go. I am thrilled to now have my knowledge in a sharable format for current and future generations of the homebuilding industry.

In a matter of days, I will reach a personal milestone of 60 trips around the sun. Having gone through a personal health crisis, the opportunity to still be here and see my young grandson take his first steps up to now play with Lego with him, is time to truly cherish. Thoughts of our Children’s Children’s Children is also a major motivator for me to “Always Leave the Campsite Better Than You Found It.”

Later this spring, our company, Doug Tarry Limited will celebrate it’s 70th anniversary. To not only reach this milestone, but to be as relevant in leadership within the North American Housing Industry is truly humbling. We are honoured buy the accolates we have received and the reputation we have earned.

Looking back on so many adventures, challenges and relationships, I can truly say “It’s a Wonderful Life”
