Project Tiny Hope Build Blitz

After five years of planning, training, meetings, and design work, Project Tiny Hope’s #blitzbuild has been a tremendous success, resulting in the completion of eight homes in just 2.5 days. This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication and collaboration of builders like Wastell Homes, MP Custom Homes, Woodfield Design & Build, DHP Homes, Collier Homes, Gilbert Contracting & Renovations, and WINMAR Property Restoration Specialists.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the volunteers and donors who helped bring this vision to life. This project is more than just constructing homes; it’s about building a community. Through the combined efforts of builders and trades, individuals now have a place to call home. Project Tiny Hope stands as a shining example of how a community can come together to make a lasting impact.

Harvest Run

Oxford dictionary defines Community as: a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. In Harvest Run that is the type of community you can enjoy, exemplified by the Rail City Running Club choosing the areas bike path and walking trail network as part of the Clubs 1st Annual half marathon. With Parks and pond and a network of trails Harvest Run is the kind of community you will want to call home. For homebuyers seeking both style and sustainability, Doug Tarry Homes presents the Ashton Townhomes. LAUNDRY LOVE

Lets face it, the grand scheme of things, laundry is a task that everyone has to tackel. While some might love it, for most, it is an endless chore that never ends. But what if it wasn’t a chore, what if you made your Laundry Room a happy and inviting space that you actually wanted to spending time in?

Whether your budget is big or small there are ways to enhance your space to make the dreaded task, enjoyable, or at the very least tolerable. While the dream for most would be large open space, with colour coded laundry baskets for white, light and dark clothes, customized cabinetry complete with a folding station and enclosed storage to keep the unsightly, but necessary items, that doesn’t always fit within your homes plan or budget. There are some great ways to make your space work for you.

1) Remove unnecessary clutter: If is doesn’t need to be out or in that space get it out, or put it into a cupboard. Unnecessary clutter can make a small space feel even smaller and can add unwanted stress with extra visual elements, distracting from the task at hand.

2) Make use of wall space. Adding upper cabinets, open shelving or even wall mounted items like collapsable laundry racks can make your space more efficient and give you storage and function, while keeping your floor space clean and open. Just remember, these types of elements may require additional wall blocking and support to ensure when they are full or loaded with wet hanging clothes that they will not come out of the wall they are secured too.

3) Decorate your walls, whether this is with a fun paint colour, wall paper or just a great piece of art, there is no reason why you shouldn’t decorate this space like any other room in your home. Again with this, less is usually more, a larger image makes more of an impact then multiple artworks around the space, creating a dynamic but no overwhelming atmosphere

4) Keep it comfortable, make sure your layout is easy to manuoiver in and out of, with no obstructions or interference will always make the task of laundry easier. It might be beneficial, to consider even adding an area rug/ runner or a thicker cushioned mat to the floor if you find your self standing in the space for long periods of time.

Warm regards,

the

Customer Care

Now that fall is here and winter is approaching, a friendly reminder from Customer Care of some general maintenance to keep your home healthy!

Before the ground freezes, remember to shut off your supply lines to the exterior hose bibs (taps). You do not want to risk damage or a broken line. Shut offs can be located in different spots for homes. Some are near the main water shut off, and others may be located under a vanity nearest the bib. Please reach out if you need a reminder where they are located in your home. Disconnect all hoses and drain the lines. It’s good practice to leave the bib (tap) open through the winter once it has been drained. Remember to close the exterior bibs back up in the spring before you turn the supply line valves back on! If a line freezes due to a lack of this process, the resulting damage would not be under warranty.

Keep your eaves, gutters and any catch basins clear of leaves.

In the case of heavy snowfall and drifting, check the intake and exhaust vents on the exterior of your home to make sure they are clear. This would include your water heater, furnace, and ERV.

Salt can do damage to exterior surfaces. Be aware of this if you park in your garage for the winter, or use it on your walkway. Rinse it away when opportunity allows.

As always, check your furnace filter and ERV filters regularly, especially for those in new developments where sod has not been completed in the area. Replace your furnace filter if it’s dirty and clean your ERV filters and core. If you need help with regular maintenance of your HVAC system, please reach out to Abode Home Comfort. They would be happy to set up a service plan.

Making sure you pay attention to regular maintenance will help ensure the enjoyment of your home for a lifetime!

Warm regards,

your Customer CareTeam

Recipe of the Month

Meatball Stroganoff

1-1/2 cups beef broth

1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes

3/4 teaspoon dried basil

3/4 cup sour cream

Directions

1. Cook egg noodles according to package directions for al dente; drain

2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Brown meatballs; remove from pan. Add broth, stirring to loosen browned bits from pan. Add seasonings. Bring to a boil; cook until liquid is reduced to 1/2 cup, 5-7 minutes.

3. Add meatballs, noodles and cream. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, until slightly thickened, 3-5 minutes. Stir in sour cream; heat through.

A message from our President

This past September 24-26, the team at Doug Tarry Homes hosted and organized a three-day blitz build for the YWCA’s Tiny Hope project geared to provide much needed access to safe and affordable housing. We were joined by 6 other builders, each of us taking on a tiny home in a friendly “race” to see who could finish first. It was an amazing experience for all those involved.

One common comment I’ve often heard when doing a blitz build is “Well, if they’re building it that fast, it must not be very good.”

While I can understand that people might have that opinion, I want to assure everyone that the opposite is far closer to the truth.

Our blitz builds begin with extensive planning to ensure that the project can be both built to a high level of quality and at an extreme speed.

In the case of the Tiny Hope Blitz Build, these homes were not only built to the Net Zero Program requirements, but they also feature many of the LifeARK™ concepts that we’ve been working on over the last several years. This includes detailing that addresses:

• Carbon Reduction

• Indoor Air Quality

• Occupant Comfort • Climate Resiliency

It was very rewarding to show these other builders how to build a structurally stronger, more resilient roof looking to meet a new CSA standard that will not even be in use for some time. This was real-time detail testing to help improve the housing industry here in Canada.

These units look great and function just as well with in-unit laundry, a kitchen, a separate bath and a bedroom. Fresh air comes from an ERV, and a high-performance water heater is also included.

One other question that came up from this specific build was “Why are you sharing the details of how you build with your competitors?”. My answer to that is we must continue to adapt to a changing climate, there is not time for us all to learn from repeating mistakes that others have already made, and I’ve made a promise to my grandson “Don’t worry about a thing, cause every little thing gonna be alright.”

If you recognize the lyric from Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” you would be correct. It’s a heck of a commitment and I am honoured that so many other builders agreed to come out and play. Sometimes you climb the mountain because it’s there, and sometimes you help because it’s the right thing to do. Especially if you are committed to “always leave the campsite better than you found it”.
