Welcome!
As we welcome September, it’s hard to believe how quickly the summer has flown by. Soon, we’ll be enjoying cooler weather and the vibrant colours of autumn. August was a busy month for us, filled with meaningful initiatives and exciting progress. We were proud to support the St. Thomas Police with their annual Stuff the Cruiser event, which was a great success. Thanks to the generosity of the community, donations are now on their way to local schools, helping students in need as they start the new school year.
We also made significant strides on Project Tiny Hope, with the first Tiny Home under construction. This demonstration home marks the beginning of an exciting journey, with all units scheduled to be completed within the next year and a half. We’re eagerly looking forward to the progress and milestones September will bring!
Warm regards,

Decor Trends
Everything but the Kitchen Sink, is normally what is considered, when building or renovating, but the Kitchen sink can be an integral part of your homes/ kitchen efficiency.
There are many material types and configurations to choose from when selecting a sink. The most common sinks people are considering these days, are stainless steel, granite composite sinks Acrylic and Fireclay.
• Stainless steel – are typically light weight and easy to install. They are generally easier on the budget compared to other sinks. Stainless sinks offer good durability, but over time can start showing hairline scratches.
• Granite Composite – are typically heavier and might require additional reinforcements to secure the sink in place. They are outstanding for durability, and heat resistance is normally great, being able to withstand heats of 530 degree fehrenheit, they do however come with a higher price point than a stainless sink.
• Acrylic Sinks – are very light weight, but can chip and do not withstand heat very well.
• Fireclay – these sinks are hard wearing and can withstand very high temperatures. They do however typically come with a much larger price tag and might require additional under cabinet support to accommodate their weight.
Sinks also come in varying depths and configurations. It is important to think about how and what you will be cleaning in your sink to determine what set up is right for you and the person who will be using it.
An ultra deep sink might be a good choice if you are always filling or cleaning large pots, but if the person who typically uses the sink is smaller in stature, they might find it difficult to reach the bottom of the sink.
On the other hand, if the sink is too shallow, it could be prone to water splashing out of the sink onto the counter or the user.
Whatever way you look at it, a Kitchen sink can be an integral part of your home, it is important to take your time and figure out what is best for you.

A message from our President
It’s Not the Heat - It’s The Humidity
HUMIDITY
LEVELS IN YOUR HOME
When you move into your new Doug Tarry home, you will find that it operates much differently than the older homes you have been used to: there are far less leaks and drafts, and the humidity levels act very differently. Older, drier homes often need to have a humidifier installed to reduce wintertime drying. That is not really the case anymore. Static electricity seldom occurs. Most of our efforts now go into keeping the overall relative humidity from being too high.
To optimize your home’s performance, you will need to balance your relative humidity to the outdoor air temperatures. Overall, it is important to stay within a humidity range of 35-50%, which will vary by the seasons. We provide our customers with an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) and an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) to assist in managing their indoor humidity and comfort. The ERV control will indicate what the indoor humidity level is in your home.
WINTER HUMIDITY
During the winter months, the humidity level should be between 35-40% in a typical home. If your home goes above 40% humidity during the wintertime, it can lead to mold growth and other harmful pests such as dust mites. On the other hand, some winters are colder than others. If the weather turns extremely cold (below -18°C), then your humidity level needs to drop accordingly and may need to go below 30% for short durations. One of the benefits of installing triple pane windows is that you can maintain a higher level of humidity in the wintertime without having excess moisture build up on the windows, which left unchecked can be a leading source of indoor mold. A humidity level in the 40-50% range can also mean you will be more comfortable and will have fewer skin irritations related to dryness. That is really hard to manage in an older home with poor quality windows.
SUMMER HUMIDITY
During the summer, your air conditioner will act as your dehumidifier in conjunction with your ERV. An air conditioner “cools” your indoor air temperature in part by removing humidity in the air. Oftentimes, excess humidity in the home during the summer, in combination with an air conditioner that is oversized for the home, will result in comfort complaints that the occupant will try to solve by setting the temperature lower. But because the unit is too large, it doesn’t run long enough to remove the humidity and you end up feeling cold and clammy and not very comfortable.
Indoor relative humidity of 40-50% is a fairly consistent and comfortable range for summertime. Setting your desired humidity level in this range will get the A/C to run on a more frequent basis and keep the home more comfortable, while reducing the chances of comfort issues from over-cooling.
During extremely hot weather, there may be days where your humidity levels go above 50%. This typically occurs when the outdoor temperature remains at or above 30°C for several days. In this case, you may choose to boost your A/C performance by running your dehumidifier.
AIR CONDITIONING (A/C)
At Doug Tarry Homes we understand the importance of managing indoor humidity levels. Because it is so important, we don’t install a traditional air conditioner. Instead, we provide our customers with an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) unit with an efficiency of 21-25 SEER. By comparison, most builders that provide an air conditioner are using a 13 SEER unit, meaning the ASHP is significantly more energy efficient to operate. The ASHP is designed to be right sized to your home heating and cooling loads and will be sized according to your home’s performance requirements. This results in longer, quieter run times that significantly improve overall efficiency. The unit also provides greater control over the humidity levels within your home by removing the appropriate amount of humidity.
Selecting the right equipment and windows and maintaining a humidity level that is in the safe comfort zone of 35-50% relative humidity will result in greater comfort and health for you and your family. That is just another example of the Doug Tarry Difference.
