It’s the most wonderful time of the year and our model homes have got even more wonderful! All our model homes have been festively decorated, and we would love for you to come see it for yourself.

This will be a special holiday season for me as it will be my first in St. Thomas after purchasing my first home here this month. I am also excited for my favourite holiday tradition, cheering on Team Canada at the Word Junior Hockey Tournament, this year the tournament will be hosted on home soil in Ottawa, so I am looking forward to some great hockey and hopefully a gold medal!

An important Doug Tarry Difference is comfort, and our team was fortunate to be treated to an insightful demonstration by the Abode team this month. It was a great learning opportunity for us to ask questions, collaborate and further understand what goes into making our homes so comfortable.

Designers Corner

Stair Run vs Stair Tread – these two terms are very similar and are used interchangeably in conversation but can be confusing when not used properly. A Stair Run is the distance measured from nosing to nosing which has a minimum requirement based on The Ontario Building Code. A Stair Tread is defined as the whole run plus the depth of the nosing (nosing can’t be more than 25mm (1”). Although these two terms are for the same part of the stair, they have two different measurements. Anyone who has built a new home or has been in a newly built home might have noticed how comfortable the stairs feel as you go up and down them. The minimum Stair Run increased a few years ago from 210mm (8.25”) to 255mm (10”) possibly to help with an aging population of Baby Boomers. 1.75” doesn’t seem like a big change but it is very noticeable on stairs and you will probably agree that they feel a lot safer.

Home Tight

As a leader in the homebuilding industry, Doug Tarry is committed to providing a great product to its customers, and a big part of this is building to Net Zero standards. According to the Canadian Home Builders’ Association website, a ‘Net Zero home produces as much energy as it consumes. It has been designed and constructed for optimal energy efficiency and cost.’

A Net Zero home requires an airtightness level of equal to or less than 1.5 air changes per hour (ACH) at 50 Pascals of pressure to qualify, and while this can be done with painstaking care during the construction process, consistently achieving this across all of DTL’s houses can be a challenge. And that is why, through Home Tight Air Sealing, Aerobarrier is applied to every house at Doug Tarry, making sure that they are all within Net Zero levels.

Aerobarrier is a game changing air sealing technology that uses a Green Gold certified water based acrylic sealant that can seal holes as big as ½” in diameter, and as thin as a human hair. With a tighter home, HVAC performance can be improved, leading to a reduction on operational carbon consumption of up to 25%. Indoor air quality (IAQ) can also be improved, as there will be less infiltration of unwanted odors. With smaller holes due to the sealant application, the chances of critters coming into the house will decrease.

Recipe of the Month

Air-Fryer Turkey Breast

INGREDIENTS:

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

2 tablespoons butter, softened

1 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary

1 teaspoon minced fresh oregano

1 teaspoon minced fresh sage

1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme

1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

4 pounds bone-in, skin-on turkey breast, thawed

Directions

1. In a small mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, butter, herbs, lemon zest, salt and pepper. Rub an even coating of herb butter on all sides of the turkey breast.

2. Preheat air fryer to 350°. Place the turkey breast in the air fryer basket skin-side down. Cook 22-26 minutes. Flip; cook an additional 25-35 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 165° and skin is golden brown and crisp.

3. Remove turkey from air fryer to a carving board. Cover with foil; rest 10 minutes. Remove meat from breast bone; carve into slices. Serve warm.

The holiday season is upon us, and with it a time to reflect on the year that was. For me this is a time of sharing and a chance to give thanks for the blessings we enjoy. I am grateful to our staff, trades, and suppliers for all their efforts in supporting the realization of the “Doug Tarry Difference”, and to our customers who show their faith in choosing what we offer to care for and nurture their families. That is most humbling and deeply gratifying.

It is also a time to reflect on years gone past. To back yard pond hockey and hot chocolate, and the fellowship it brings. Remembering cold winter nights, snuggled up warm with “It’s A Wonderful Life” to watch over a bowl full of popcorn.

And it’s a time to wish for what may come. To our children’s children, and the hope that they are blessed with these simple things.
