Why a Doug Tarry home Might Not Be for You

Recipe of the Month
Cheeseburger Cups
INGREDIENTS:
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1-1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tubes (10-1/2 ounces each) large refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
1/2 cup cubed Velveeta
Directions
1. In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink, breaking it into crumbles; drain. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard and Worcestershire sauce.
Remove from the heat.
2. Press each biscuit onto the bottom and up the side of a greased muffin cup. Spoon beef mixture into cups; top with cheese cubes. Bake at 400° until cups are golden brown, 1 4-16 minutes.

HAP’S AND THE AIR WE BREATHE
As a society, we spend a great deal of time indoors and we are inundated with exposure to chemicals. Today the average person is exposed to more chemicals in a two-month period than their grandparents were in their lifetime (people who lived through the early to mid20th century).
We live in tighter homes with exposure to more chemicals and at higher concentrations. And we wonder why there are so many respiratory ailments and health issues that are affecting more and more of us. That is a significant driver in why governments are working towards reducing our exposure to VOCs (volatile organic compounds). This can be difficult because some of those VOCs occur in products we like, such as air fresheners, scented candles, and even fresh cut flowers. In general terms, there has been a significant effort by governments as the regulatory authority to reduce our exposure to dangerous levels of VOCs.
But would it concern you to know that there is another whole class of chemicals that are also a danger to our health that very few people are even aware of? In this case I am referring to HAPs (hazardous air pollutants). HAPs show up everywhere and it can be difficult to track what products contain which HAPs. For example, the use of Formaldehyde and Methylisothiazolinone (MI) as preservatives in paint. Both are known to cause respiratory ailments, and both are used by the paint industry as a preservative. Quite literally, what’s on your walls can affect your ability to breathe. For people with low resistance, this could be a very quick pronounced reaction; for others, it’s the long-term exposure that might cause them to develop issues.
Providing a safe, healthy workplace and living environment for our clients is something we take very seriously at Doug Tarry Homes. From radon mitigation measures to details that reduce the opportunity for mold growth. It includes our efforts to reduce our customers’ exposure to both VOCs and HAPs by selecting products that either contain very low levels of VOCs or are HAP free. That is why we proudly provide our projects with Graphenstone Paints and Specialty Coatings.
While the majority of other paint manufacturers might offer products with low VOCs, they commonly use Formaldehyde or MI as the preservative. Graphenstone products use limestone as the preservative. By choosing paints that are zero VOC (now listed as trace VOCs) and free of HAPs, Doug Tarry Homes is able to provide a healthier living environment for our customers while also limiting unwanted exposure to our trades and staff who enter our homes when the exposure would be at its highest. We are proud to have made this choice.
If you are considering repainting your home, or doing a renovation, it’s worth considering what’s in the products you are choosing, especially around VOCs and HAPs. Your family and their health are worth it.
