Summer is almost here and it is time to give your space a refresh to ring in the laid back season.
Here are some tips to help make small changes to your home to give that easy, breezy summer feeling to any space:
1) Change out heavy dark textiles and prints for light weight and airy items. It is time to put the dark pillows and heavy knit blankets in the linen closet until fall. By bringing in fresh accent pillows and throw blankets you can instantly take your space from heavy, to light and airy.
2) Bring the outside in, by implementing greenery and flowers in your space. Not only will it give a natural feel, but the scent of fresh cut flowers will lighten the atmosphere of your home
3) Add bright pops of colour to your space. Summer is a time when you can bring vibrant colours into your spaces to liven them up. This doesn’t mean you have to paint your entire home bright lemon yellow, but even a small vase or pillow can really help to liven up a space.

INGREDIENTS:
3 medium peaches, pitted
1/3 cup ginger ale, chilled, plus additional for topping if desired
2 tablespoons honey
1 quart vanilla ice cream
Optional: Whipped cream and peach slices
Directions
1. Place peaches, ginger ale and honey in a blender; cover and process until smooth. Add ice cream; cover and process until combined. Pour into serving glasses. If desired, top with whipped cream or additional ginger ale and garnish with peach slices. Serve immediately.
Indoor Air Quality: Fresh Air Matters
According to a study by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we spend about 90% of our time indoors, where the concentrations of some pollutants can be up to five times higher than typical outdoor concentrations. We are also exposed to more chemicals in thirty days than our grandparents were exposed to in a lifetime. Chemical exposure and the air we breathe is making many of us sick.
Yet the United States has only banned nine of the 86,000 chemicals registered there and it is only marginally better here in Canada with 26 substances banned. Those are disheartening statistics if you have a family member suffering from respiratory ailment such as asthma. In comparison, the European Union have banned over 2,000 chemicals in the last decade and a half.
So how might you protect your family members from harmful and unwanted chemical exposure and poor indoor air quality? Overall, there are four main processes for improving indoor air quality that were originally developed by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) several decades ago:
Remove the Pollutants Product selection to limit VOCs and other harmful chemicals is a critical step in reducing dangerous chemicals. That means getting rid of the scented candles and products that scent the air. It’s also why we choose Graphenstone Paints for our homes as they meet the more stringent EU standards.
Control the Source Air barriers, water resistant barriers and soil gas barriers all play a role in limiting dangerous toxins from either growing or accumulating in your home. A musty smelling basement is a sign of poor indoor air quality.
Ventilate Particles from cooking, bathing, pets, cleaning products and other sources can all accumulate indoors. Replacing stale indoor air with good clean outdoor air on a regular basis greatly improves IAQ.
Filter If you have a ducted mechanical system, it can be used to capture the particulate that floats in the air. Use a minimum of a MERV 11 filter.
Or better yet, if you’re looking to buy a new home, then look for one that has been built to Energy Star or Net Zero specifications, as these programs will typically incorporate these four control processes into the homes. It’s a great way to help keep your family healthier and safer and that makes good sense.
