Welcome!

As summer brightens our days, we’re thrilled to share community highlights and upcoming events that draw us closer. Last month, we honored National Occupational Health and Safety Week and CMHA Mental Health Week, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a safe, supportive environment for our team and community. This month, we salute Dave Maxwell and Dominic Sopoco, two of our team members whose brave response to fires at homeowner properties vividly showcased our commitment to safety and community support, far beyond the initial sale. Their actions reflect the deep care and responsibility we hold for every family we serve.

Our Mothering Day event left each attendee with a plant and a smile after a delightful pizza lunch, strengthening appreciation and camaraderie among our incredible women. Victoria Day also marked the festive start of summer, and we hope you enjoyed the long weekend as much as we did, celebrating tradition and welcoming warmer days.

Looking ahead, we’re excited for a season filled with more events, achievements, and deep community engagement. Your support is invaluable, and we can’t wait to share these sunny days. Thank you for being part of our journey. Here’s to a summer of health, happiness, and shared success. Let’s make it unforgettable!

Mixed Metals: A Shining Trend in 2024 Home Decor

In 2024, home decor is embracing the versatile and sophisticated trend of mixed metals. This design approach combines different metallic finishes, creating a rich, layered look that adds depth and interest to any space. Whether it’s the juxtaposition of warm brass with cool chrome or the subtle blend of matte black with polished nickel, mixed metals are redefining modern interiors with their dynamic and contemporary appeal.

One of the key advantages of incorporating mixed metals into your home decor is the versatility it offers. This trend allows homeowners to blend various styles and periods, seamlessly integrating antique pieces with modern elements. For instance, a traditional brass chandelier can coexist harmoniously with sleek stainless steel kitchen appliances, creating a balanced and cohesive aesthetic. Additionally, the different metal tones can highlight architectural features and enhance the overall character of a room, making it feel curated and intentional.

Carbon Reduction

A message from our President

There is a great deal of conversation beginning to happen around carbon reduction in residential construction. What does it mean to you the homebuyer and why should you care? There are more than a few answers to these questions, with the greater planet survivability of our way of life being threatened by climate change and rising temperatures which lead to mass forest fires, that release more carbon, and rising oceans, that threaten coastal regions, in the short term with hurricanes and in the long term with these communities very existence. So yeah, there is a lot of urgency to go around.

Regardless of how we feel about carbon taxes and government involvement, it does not negate our need to face this challenge.

Back to how it impacts you the homebuyer. By definition, there are two types of carbon that we look at in todays housing, operational (how you run your home) and embodied (what is built into your home).

When we look at reducing operational carbon, this has a significant benefit to you the homebuyer because it is directly linked to the energy efficiency of your home. Reducing the energy demand to run the home means you are using less carbon as well. So, purchasing an Energy Star, or Net Zero Home, will reduce the operational carbon AND save you money on your energy bills. This has been a focus of both energy programs and codes for some time now. Operationally, our all electric homes are at or approaching Net Zero Carbon performance and our Dual Fuel hybrid homes are getting very close, all while reducing the cost to operate the homes we provide to our customers.

However, as we have reduced our energy consumption and our operational carbon, leading high-performance builders, such as Doug Tarry Homes, have begun to be concerned about the embodied carbon that is built into the homes, in the form of the materials being used, such as concrete, brick, insulation and other materials. This is a one time hit (provided the building does not go to the landfill due to storm or other damage) but the environmental impact can be significant.

Unfortunately, it is much more difficult to quantify a direct personal benefit to the homebuyer for reducing the embodied carbon emissions of a home, which is one of the reasons why this area has lagged behind in being addressed by the homebuilding community.

As a company, Doug Tarry Limited has taken a leadership role in looking at both operational and embodied carbon reduction. That is one of the reasons why we have sponsored the BEAM calculator that helps builders calculate the embodied carbon of their buildings. During our time working on embodied carbon, we have been able to reduce our overall carbon footprint significantly, with one of the biggest reductions coming from the change in the material formula for rigid foam insulation. This was a benefit to all of the housing industry but had a larger impact for high performance builders because they include more insulation.

While we continue to work on reducing our embodied carbon, we are constantly striving to do so, while keeping an eye on affordability, resiliency and buildability. It is an exciting time and we are honoured to be playing a key role in moving our industry forward towards a more sustainable future.
