Welcome!

In our Sales and Marketing department, this month had an exciting blend of personal milestones and professional achievements. This month, we had a heartwarming celebration for one of our cherished New Home Sales Consultants, Jade, who has embarked on a beautiful new journey into motherhood. Our team gathered for a delightful baby shower, sending her off with warm wishes and lots of love as she prepares to welcome her first child. We’re all cheering for you during this special time!

On the professional front, Doug Tarry Homes made a memorable appearance at the STEHBA Home Show. This event was a resounding success, marked by excellent attendance and an array of outstanding vendors. Adding to the excitement, Doug Tarry himself graced the event with his presence, taking a Saturday morning shift that provided a wonderful opportunity for attendees to engage directly with him. It was truly thrilling to see so many community members and potential homebuyers enjoying these interactions.

We also spread a bit of spring cheer by handing out pansies to our visitors. For those who took these blooms home, we hope they are now planted and ready to flourish, mirroring the beautiful weather on its way.

We are thrilled to announce that Doug Tarry Homes has been honored with the prestigious “Champions of the Earth” Impact Award at this year’s St. Thomas Chamber of Commerce event! This distinguished recognition is awarded to businesses that have made significant contributions to environmental protection and sustainability. Receiving this award is a testament to our collective commitment and ongoing efforts to promote sustainability within our community. It is a great honor to be acknowledged for our dedication to making a positive impact on the environment.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Home Show and participated in our community events this month. Your involvement and support continue to propel us forward, and we look forward to what the upcoming months have in store.

Warm regards,

Decor Trends

Biophilic design, a trend that connects people with nature indoors, has become increasingly popular in interior design. This approach emphasizes integrating natural elements into our spaces to enhance wellbeing and sustainability.

What is Biophilic Design? Biophilic design stems from the idea that humans naturally connect with nature. This design philosophy aims to harmonize people and their surroundings by using natural light, plants, water features, and organic materials to improve mood and productivity.

Key Elements of Biophilic Design include

• Natural Light: Biophilic design maximizes natural light with features like large windows and skylights, creating a bright and uplifting atmosphere.

• Indoor Plants: Plants purify the air and add greenery to rooms, from small potted plants to vertical gardens.

• Organic Materials: Using materials like wood and stone adds warmth and connects people with nature. Water Features: Fountains and aquariums create a calming ambiance.

• Nature-Inspired Patterns and Colours: Earthy tones and nature-inspired prints make interiors feel closer to nature.

The Benefits of Biophilic Design reduces stress, boosts focus, and improves mood. In workplaces, it enhances creativity and productivity. It also aligns with sustainability through eco-friendly materials and energy efficiency, benefiting both individuals and the planet.

A message from our President Air Control

Build It Tight and Ventilate Right. That’s a mantra we use a great deal at Doug Tarry Homes. But what does it really mean?

Air Control, or air tightness, comprises one of the two commandments that I write about in my book “From Bleeding Edge to Leading Edge: A Builders Guide to Net Zero Homes”. It is one of the commandments because it is just that important.

From an energy efficiency perspective, we want to control the loss of conditioned air from inside the building and ensure we can clean and temper the fresh air we are bringing into the building. With a poorly constructed home with lots of air leakage, you can’t control the flow of air. This will increase the cost of operating your home as much as 20% for a home built to current codes over the Net Zero air tightness requirements, and significantly more for a leaky older home.

Not only does this cost homeowners and tenants more in their energy bills, but it also affects the quality of the air they breathe. Imagine the air coming into your home comes through the insulation in the walls. It acts like a filter, but it also collects the bad stuff in the air and can lead to mold and other particulate that you end up breathing. This can affect the health of you and your family.

That’s one of the reasons I am troubled when builders say a Code built home is “just as good” as ENERGY STAR® or Net Zero and then they say they don’t enroll their homes in the programs because what they do is “too expensive” or “a waste of time” - the bottom line is that unless a builder is testing their homes, they simply don’t know how their home performs.

We have tested hundreds of homes and developed different techniques and details to reduce our air leakage – first below 2.5 ACH, then below 1.5 and, ultimately, down to our current average of below 1.0. Using advanced sealing technology, we’ve even taken a semi-detached home down to 0.15 ACH. That was an amazing result, and one that we know we can repeat. I share some of these techniques in my book.

Air tightness is so important, that we invested in the area franchise of AeroBarrier (through our company Home Tight), a system that can guarantee performance results for every home we build. And that’s just another example of the Doug Tarry Difference.

Warm regards,
