Must see & Do

Ben Boyd National Park - Kiah Inlet George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows. This history of collaboration between killer whales and humans was the subject of the documentary “Killers Of Eden”, screened on ABC TV in 2006. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. To celebrate the significance of whales to the town, Eden holds its Whale Festival in November each year.

The historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay, in the heyday of the whaling industry. The Seahorse Inn, also built in 1843, has been beautifully restored to its former glory, and the ruins of Boyd’s church can still be seen. Eden is a paradise for those who love to fish, with kilometres of beaches, river estuaries and rock platforms to explore, as well as charter boat operations for access for deep-sea fishing. Eden has beautiful beaches close to town; try Aslings Beach for a surf or to explore rock pools, or Corcora Beach for fun with the family.

Digger’s Best Friend: an A-Z of animals in war The Australian War Memorial’s latest travelling exhibition, Digger’s Best Friend offers an A to Z of animals in war, and will on be display at Eden Killer Whale Museum starting December. Digger’s Best Friend offers an A to Z of animals in war, from mascots and messengers to creepy-crawlies. Animals are put to many uses in war. Sometimes they have jobs to do: the horses, camels, mules, and donkeys used to transport soldiers and equipment, as well as carrier pigeons and tracker dog

EDEN

with their special talents. While animals are often used as mascots and pets, or as symbols on badges and flags, Digger’s Best Friend also looks at those unwelcome animals, such as insects, rats, and wild creatures, that make life in the field even more difficult and dangerous. The exhibition has been developed with a young audience in mind, but visitors of all ages will enjoy its fascinating and moving stories. The role of the exhibition is to present

Now

history as it happened. There were no doubt some tragic stories, as there were for our service men and women in conflict zones, but this exhibition seeks to give recognition to the contribution made by animals. Digger’s Best Friend is open to the public from 5 December – 31 January 2010

Pambula

Must see & Do Take a walk around Panboola Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Take a trip to the scenic village of Wyndham Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

Pambula Beach - Pambula Lake - Wyndham The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late nineteenth century. However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. This thriving village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops, and pubs. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. There are several safe beaches here, as well walking tracks and viewing platforms. Heading south from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too.

Coastlife Celebrating 15yrs of Adventure The 2009 - 10 summer season is a great milestone for Coastlife Adventures; it celebrates 15 years in the adventure business.

Managing Director Col Funston says that "We’ve come a long way from our first year of borrowing a few old surfboards and wetsuits from a friend in Melbourne”. Coastlife provides outdoor adventure programs for schools from the Riverina in Victoria to Canberra and Sydney. Last month many students from the inland

town of Bourke, surfed and kayaked for the very first time. In the summer holidays Coastlife operates its surf school and marine kayak tours along the pristine beaches and estuaries of Tathra, Merimbula and Pambula (see ad below). Staff are fully qualified for the activities they lead and all equipment is provided. To celebrate their 15th birthday, Coastlife is giving every person that joins a kayak tour in December and January an opportunity to win a new “frenzy’ sit on top kayak. Bookings for surf lessons and kayak tours can be made on 6494 1122.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Bega Valley with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are still visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early history. With its beautiful location on the shores of Merimbula Lake, there are plenty of places to enjoy the view; looking across the bay from the restored Merimbula Wharf, enjoying the sunrise or sunset from the Boardwalk around the southern section of the Lake, or strolling around Fishpen watching the pelicans.

Enjoy New Year's Eve Fireworks and markets in Merimbula Merimbula is again planning a great evening of entertainment for the whole family this New Year's Eve. The day starts at 8.00am with a Morning Market on Ford Park. Food stalls, craft, local produce and live entertainment to delight and entertain all. A Family Concert begins at 5.30pm with the Brent McLeod Trio followed by the King as Elvis at 6.30pm. At 7.30pm up and coming singer/songwriter Chris O’Donnell takes the stage, and at 8pm the fabulous O’Donnell Brothers Band present a special two hour performance “The Best of Brothers Show”. As well as great music, there will be fun

rides, and fantastic food and beverage stalls. Fireworks displays will be held at 9.30pm and midnight to light up the Merimbula skies, with thanks to Dave Hanshaw, who provided one of the most spectacular fireworks displays ever seen in Merimbula last year. After the 9.30pm Fireworks display the O’Donnell Brothers are back on stage until hot young DJ Gary hijacks the sound system until midnight when the Fireworks usher in the New Year. Bring a blanket, chairs and a picnic, but please note, this is an Alcohol Free Event (alcohol will not be available for

MANDENI

sale but you can bring something to enjoy with your picnic), and alcohol restrictions come into force after midnight. The event is being organised by the Merimbula Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism in partnership with the Bega Valley Shire Council and the NSW Police Force. Step back in time at Merimbula's Old School Museum One of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the wonderful Old School Museum. A wonderful facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to spend some time these holidays. Originally built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers, squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. It provides a secure site for displays

of local history such as the story of Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and lost it by investing in the Pambula goldfields; the Wharf and the Illawarra Steamship Company that provided transport for people and goods up and down the coast before roads were built; Syms Covington, who travelled with Charles Darwin in the Beagle and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant; gold and pyrophyllite mining around Pambula; the wrecking of the William Dawes and the SS Merimbula; mutiny and murder on an American whaling ship and

They are searching for a treasure which they think may be buried at Pambula Beach, but must find the missing piece of a treasure map to be sure. Bega

Must see & Do

Home of the world famous Bega Cheese Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley, but it is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must.

The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region. Bega is still a friendly country town, even though the demographics have changed over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle.

Fishing Report - December December's a great month to wet a line along the South Coast of NSW, with a smorgasbord of species on offer. Whether you’re fishing, beach, rock, estuary or offshore, there’s something for every angler. Offshore: A top month to target bottom dwellers like snapper, morwong, pigfish and flathead. Most reefs and gravel patches will hold fish, with fresh squid, striped tuna and pilchards good baits to use. Better reefs to try are Mowarrie Point, Long Reef, White cliffs, Bunga and the south end of Montague Island. Out wider the game fishos should be happy. With the water hovering around 21 degrees, yellowfin tuna, albacore, marlin and an array of shark species will be available. Look for temperature changes, tide lines, birds and bait and concentrate your efforts around them. Kingfish numbers will also swell with Montague Island a good starting point. Jigs and live bait being the best methods to catching them. Rocks: Spinning chromed lure and whole ganged pilchards should produce some quality salmon, tailor, kingfish and bonito from most deeper rocky headlands. Some good spots to try are Tura Head, Mystery Bay, Tathra Wharf and Tathra Headland. Anglers fishing the washes should have no troubles getting a feed with blackfish, bream and drummer all available. Fresh tuna cubes, prawns, cunjevoi and abgut with a little burley used sparsely will see some great action. Beaches: With the warmer water temperatures we experience during December, bread and butter species like bream, whiting and yellow-eye mullet are perfect targets and tasty on the plate. Almost any beach along the coast

that has a deeper gutter or rocky corner is ideal for these species. Using live beach worms, pipi, prawns and striped tuna should see the rod bend the right way. Expect salmon, tailor and mulloway too, with beaches like North Tura, Cuttagee, Gillards, Tilba and Congo the best to try. Pilchards, bluebait, and fresh squid would be the pick of the baits. Estuaries: Most systems along the coast will be in full swing with flathead, bream, whiting, flounder, tailor, blackfish and trevally all having a chew. Anglers using soft plastics will have a lot of fun especially with flathead numbers on the increase. Concentrate your efforts over shallow sandbanks with weed fringed edges for best results. Anglers using bait like bass yabbies, live worms and pipis should be able to get a feed of whiting and bream. Fishing the sand flats and channels is the go, with a running sinker rig ideal. Better estuaries to try are Merimbula, Bega River, Bermagui, Narooma, Moruya and Batemans Bay. Tight lines till next month Stuart Hindson

Stuart Hindson is the owner of Aussie Fish Estuary Adventures, and provides guided fishing charters from Wonboyn to Batemans Bay and all estuaries in between. With over 20 years experience in the industry, Stuart really knows his fishing. Check out his website at www.ausfishing.com.au for more information, or call Stuart on 0400 062 504 or 02 6495 9902 to book a fishing experience you won’t forget.

Cobargo

Must see & Do

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production. The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful

example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs.. Take a stroll around the town and experience the delightful ambience of yesteryear. Take your pick from an array of art and craft, rare gems and jewelry, pottery, woodwork & leatherwork, or hunt among the collectables, curios and old wares on offer. Recharge your batteries at Valley Edge Cafe with great coffee and a fresh, delectable menu. Take a few minutes to enjoy the beautiful photography that adorns the walls - there are some truly spectacular images. Quaama, just south of Cobargo, is where you’ll find Fruit Ballad Wines. It’s well worth the short trip to drop in and try some of Jane’s wonderful hand-made fruit wines.; you’re bound to find something new.

Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira Creek Enjoy the Outdoor Gallery, with painted lightpoles and topiary sculptures Head south and try delicious fruit wines at Fruit Ballad in Quaama. NATURE’S UMBRELLA Hopefully while reading this you are sitting under one of nature's umbrellas, or if not, you wish you were. Not only do trees provide you with shade during the warmer months but also extend the living area of the home to the outside, and they also create protected growing areas for shade loving plants. The use of shade trees in a garden can be beneficial by decreasing our demand for electricity for cooling and heating and also provide respite from the hot summer sun. In selecting the tree for your particular need, several considerations should be made. The most important consideration undoubtedly is the eventual size of the tree. The tree should be planted at least one and a half times the mature radius of the tree from buildings thus decreasing the risk of damage to the building from larger roots and reducing the risk of damage to the building should a branch fall. Another important consideration is whether to use an evergreen or a deciduous variety. By using a deciduous tree you will provide summer shade

over the garden and house and in winter allow more sun to enter the area providing natural warmth during the day instead of artificial heating. An evergreen variety could be used further from the home to provide all around wind protection for the garden. Consideration also must be made as to your climatic zone and what trees will perform best in that area. It is totally useless to attempt to grow trees in an area that not is suited to the plant. If in doubt ask the qualified staff in your nursery or make a visit to your local botanic gardens or visit open gardens that have used large trees. If you are in the Tilba Tilba area, a visit to the beautiful Foxglove Spire Gardens will impress you with an interesting collection of shade trees from smaller crab apples to larger scarlet oaks and ornamental pear trees. An effective way of planting is to mass plant trees that are tall and slender like Silver Birch and to use larger trees like Oaks and Elms as single specimen trees to eventually hang a swing for the grand kids or have a garden of shade loving plants beneath its boughs.

There are generally two ways to purchase shade trees, either as an open rooted tree during winter or as container plant during the other seasons. The root systems of open rooted plants should not be allowed to dry out prior to planting and if the roots are dry, you should not purchase the plant as this will give the tree a set back to re-establishment. Container grown plants can be planted all year but have a check of the root system in case root curling in the pot has occurred. Plan you tree planting now while it is hot so you are able to best ascertain the best siting in relation to the hot summer sun. Call in to your local nursery and place your order for the tree that you have decided upon. Most nurseries will be now placing orders with the growers for their winter supply of open rooted trees.

Tilba

Must see & Do

Tilba Tilba - Central Tilba The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, jewellery, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery, a pub and famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. The Tilba Festival is held every Easter.

Mogo

Must see & Do

Old Mogo Town The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. Certainly there were enough people to support a number of stores, pubs and churches and a public school, which is still operating today. To experience what the town was like

during the boom, a visit to Old Mogo Town is a must. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Batemans Bay has a fantastic 27 hole championship golf course, and there are plenty of other courses to play within easy driving distance. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee, or head north across the bridge and experience Long, Pebbly and Depot Beach. While there, take a walk in the Murramarang National Park. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. Picknicking by the water is a must. Ri

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income in the previous century. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia; the bridge celebrated its 50th birthday in 2006. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or even a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. There are a myriad of beaches to explore, views to enjoy and walks to take, no matter what the season. Batemans Bay is a great destination

Clyde River Oysters at the Oyster Shed There’s something about being on or near the water that lends peace and tranquillity to the spirit, and Batemans Bay is blessed to have such easy access to the beautiful Clyde River, running right through the township. If you’re down around the water’s edge, make sure you drop in to see Enola at The Oyster Shed, the last shed on Wray St, located on the north-western bank of the Clyde River. Enola sells fresh Sydney rock oysters grown “organically” from her own leases, in one of the cleanest rivers in New South Wales. The Oyster Shed’s oysters have an excellent flavour, and

are a highly nutritious food, being rich in omega 3 oils, iron, zinc, iodine, vitamins A, B complex, & C. These days, you can be much more adventurous in the kitchen with oysters than just serving the old standards of oysters kilpatrick or mornay. Just ask Enola - she’s got lots of recipes for a more contemporary approach. The Oyster Shed is also a great spot for a picnic. All you need is the picnic rug, a bottle of wine and some freshlyopened oysters, then relax and enjoy the spectacular Clyde River views. And to keep the holiday vibe going, take some oysters home with you!
