From The Editor Welcome to the March/April edition of the Far South Coast iMag. Here's hoping Covid19 continues to retreat, allowing our region's businesses to build on their recovery after the onagain, off-again summer we had. Several of our best known festivals are going ahead this March and April...it definitely feels like a return to normal! These events are Covid19 safe and are the result of huge amounts of work by festival organisers - thank you to you all. First up in March is the fabulous EAT Festival - this year it features a range of new events happening up and down the coast, rather than just in Merimbula. Read more on page 13. Sculpture Bermagui is also on this March - it's a fantastic chance to appreciate outstanding sculptures in spectacular Bermagui. Check it out on page 33. April kicks off with the renowned Four Winds Festival at Barraga Bay. Festival Director Lindy Hume has described this year's event as "an open-armed welcome,....a gathering site for artists and audiences, locals and visitors to our region, people of all ages and backgrounds". Find out more on page 31. Tilba's Festival is back too, and as always it has a huge range of live music, market stalls, food, traditional street games and lots of kids' entertainment. See pages 35 - 36. The Narooma Oyster Festival is on April 30 - May 1st and is "a mouth-watering celebration of South Coast flavours". There's also live music and family entertainment, a bushtucker cook-up and more. Find details on pages 42 - 43. Keep your iMag handy, download it from our website at www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au or from our Facebook page - Far South Coast iMag, and enjoy!

Things to See & Do Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Visit 'Old Tom' at the Eden Killer Whale Museum Wander through the shops and cafés in the main street Stroll along the Curalo Lake Boardwalk or the Asling’s Beach Maritime Walk. VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953
Eden is the gateway to the beautiful Far South Coast from Victoria, and the township made it through last summer's bushfires unscathed. Like many of our coastal and hinterland towns, it hasn't recorded any cases of COVID19, and is back to its beautiful best and ready to welcome visitors. Experience Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. 'Old Tom' was a crucial part of the most extraordinary collaboration between humans and killer

whales ever witnessed on earth. The Museum has a wonderful collection of artefacts from days gone by - book a tour to get the most from a visit. Eden is one of the few places in the world where Humpback Whales feed on their migratory route, and with many other whale species travelling close to shore, it's the perfect place to go whale-watching. Book a cruise or head to the nearest headland or beach between September to November. Each year, there are more and more whales visiting; this year there were several 'mega-pods' - almost 100 whales were spotted feeding from Tathra to Eden - a truly spectacular sight. Local Aboriginal people (members of the Yuin nation) had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. Head down to the Wharf to see the fishing boats and other vessels tied up alongside the dock. Some sections of the area's spectacular National Parks were affected by bushfires this summer. The Light to Light walk is open, but the Hegartys Bay remote campground is closed . Check the National Parks and Wildlife Service website before heading out. www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Indulge in retail therapy at the businesses housed in Pambula's historic buildings Sample culinary delights and fabulous coffee at Pambula's cafés and restaurants Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and the Old Racecourse Try some fresh oysters at Pambula Lake
The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797; a marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.
8
Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafés, restaurant, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar and tea room. Panboola is located at the southern end of Pambula, and is a wonderful example of a community-led environmental restoration project. With hundreds of native trees, shrubs etc. planted, Panboola has transformed grazing paddocks into a thriving wetland area, with several walking tracks to explore. It's seasonally home to thousands of flying foxes who visit from Bega to feed on local flowering eucalypts. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the crystal clear water below. Head south on the Princes Highway and turn left to Pambula Lake - the operational base for several oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of Broadwater Oyster's delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Merimbula, the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast, really struggled in 2020, as did all our towns in the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla shires. Thousands of tourists evacuated during the summer bushfire crisis, then COVID19 hit, further decimating business incomes. Covid19 again hit the area hard on New Year's Eve,with another Victorian border lockdown seeing visitors fleeing south. To all the people
who've come back, or come to the area for the first time, we say a big thank you - your support means so much to local businesses. Merimbula really does have something for everyone, with its beautiful beaches, lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and an array of attractions and accommodation. It's a great place to go shopping, with locally owned shops and boutiques lining the main street and tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with excellent coffee, delicious ice-cream and gelati, and restaurants that feature fresh local seafood, locally-grown produce and vegetarian/vegan options. Check out the walking tracks around town the walks from the Wharf to Spencer Park, the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen have spectacular views of the water. Other things to do include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

1. The Big Hole, Deua National Park 3.5km return, Approx. 1.5 - 2.5 hours Thought to be around 400 million years in the making, this is an extraordinary limestone marvel; a roofless cave which is over 100m deep and 50m wide. It can be reached by walking from Berlang campground, wading across Shoalhaven River, then continuing through dry eucalypt forest and unique nana heath, with expansive views of the park on your journey. The vast open chasm can be viewed from the lookout and, if you’re there in the early morning or late afternoon, you may see its resident lyrebird come out from its ferny grotto to feed. For a more challenging hike, carry on to Marble Arch or return to Shoalhaven River for a picnic and a swim.

2. Bingi Dreaming Track, Eurobodalla National Park 3km return, Approx. 2 hours Follow in the footsteps of the Brinja-Yuin people as you walk the Bingi Dreaming track. Traditionally, Dreaming tracks or Song Lines link the places visited by Aboriginal people. The Bingi Dreaming track links campsites, ceremonial and trade sites, fresh water and plentiful coastal food sources. Along the way, you might see stone artefacts or patches of shell middens. The walk passes through different types of coastal habitat; there are great opportunities for birdwatching among the heathlands, forests and lakeshores. You’re likely to see kangaroos and wallabies relaxing in the sun, as well as panoramic views of Gulaga (Mt Dromedary) and Baranguba (Montague Island). Stretching from Congo in the north to Tuross Head in the south, you can start the 14km walk from either end, or break it up into a few shorter walks to enjoy over a couple of days. There are lots of places to stop for a swim or picnic along the way, so don’t forget to take your swimmers and a towel.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.
The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. Please note the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is currently closed until further notice. If you're interested in the history of the Bega area, the Bega Pioneer Museum is a must. Described as a “time capsule” and managed by the Bega Valley Historical Society, it focuses on the collection, preservation and celebration of the history of Bega and surrounding districts. Currently open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am - 2pm, the Bega Pioneer Museum is a real treasure; children will be fascinated by the displays of items from 'the olden days'. Phone (02) 6492 1453. Bega has a thriving arts community with its Regional Gallery which hosts major touring exhibitions and the artist-run Spiral Gallery. There's a fantastic walking track that goes all the way from the sporting fields near the Bridge over to the Bega River, and then on to the Old Racecourse. The river banks are being restored, with weed control and revegation programs being implemented. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

StunningTathra Like so many places on the Far South Coast, Tathra is a unique mix of old and new. Home to the iconic Tathra Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, the Wharf and the Tathra Pub are the best known buildings in town. Receiving its first cargo in 1858, the Wharf was an integral part of coastal trade for almost 95 years, with the last ship taking cargo from Tathra in 1954. It was vital for supplying nearby towns and villages with supplies from Sydney, and for transporting local produce back again. The Wharf is a great spot for fishing and to look out for whales, seals, dolphins and large sting rays, which can be seen near the wharf. The Tathra Hotel was originally named the Ocean View Hotel, when it was constructed in 1888. Following 18 months of renovations, today it combines heritage and contemporary features. The Hotel now features a micro brewery, a restaurant featuring local seasonal produce, new rooms and a small theatre. Thanks to the efforts of local firefighters, neither the Wharf or the Hotel were damaged by the bushfire that tore through Tathra in March 2018. Tathra was not impacted by the 2020 bushfires. Tathra is a fantastic base for a short or longer break, with a wide variety of outdoor activities
and its proximity to other destinations, such as Bermagui, Cobargo, Bega and Merimbula. The track from Tathra to the bridge at Mogareeka is always popular with those out for a stroll or a run, bike riders and skateboarders, and is great for younger children. The playground at Taylors Square was updated in 2019, with the design following the NSW Everyone Can Play guidelines. This new inclusive playspace is designed to be accessible by children of all abilities, with pathways and picnic tables constructed to similar standards. Tathra has a vibrant food scene focused on local produce, with excellent cafes, restaurants and a fine food providore who bakes artisan sourdough breads daily. And trying to determine who has the best coffee in town is quite the challenge! Tathra Beach is the heart of the town, with surfing, kayaking and swimming all popular. The Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club provide a great community service patrolling the beach during the summer months. Try snorkelling near the Wharf, or launch a boat from nearby Kianinny Bay. To explore the Bega River, head over the bridge at Mogareeka to the boat ramp. There are lots of accommodation options in Tathra, from camping in nearby National Parks to caravan parks, cabins and four star resorts. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

normal again. 2021 is shaping up to be just as exciting, with at least 145 works entered. A year of a global pandemic and a slow recovery from bushfire will no doubt inspire artists' creativity - everyone is looking forward to seeing this year's creations. The outdoor nature of most of the exhibition, centred on Bermagui’s beautiful Dickinson Point and Foreshore, means that the event is Covid-safe. You'll find the indoor sculptures in the Surf Club, in front of glorious Horse Shoe Bay, with Gulaga as a stunning back drop. This year's program includes live music (thanks to Four Winds), workshops, tours and artist presentations. You don't need to be ‘interested’ in art to enjoy this exhibition. The outdoor nature of most of the exhibition, centred on Bermagui’s beautiful Dickinson Point and Foreshore, means that the event is Covid-safe. The indoor sculptures are to be curated for the first time in the Surf Club, in front of glorious Horse Shoe Bay, with Gulaga as a stunning back drop. What more could we hope for! Last year there were 129 sculptures in total, 56 outdoor and 73 indoor. 2021 has at least 145 works entered. We are wondering what a year of global pandemic and slow recovery from bushfire will be inspire artists to create; no doubt it will be extraordinary. This year the program includes live music (thanks to Four Winds), workshops, artist
presentations and tours, and a novel Sculpture meets Golf adventure. There will be something for everyone - you don't need to be ‘interested’ in art to enjoy this exhibition. Thought provoking, and often fun sculptures stimulate conversation and illicit reactions from both young and old. Whether you are a golfer, a fisherman, a biker on a ride along the coast, or a casual visitor, it will be well worth the trip! Our community highly values this event to remind us how amazing our South Coast location is. The business community greatly benefits from the thousands of visitors to the region, and after two disrupted summers, they could use all the support they can get. We trust locals and those from further afield will make an extra effort to be here in 2021 to enjoy what may turn out to be the ‘best ever’ event to date. Check our website (sculpturebermagui.org.au) and social media for information - and we'll see you in March!

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. 34
The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has maintained its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. Gulaga Gallery has beautiful hemp and bamboo clothing, music, jewellery, crystals, books and much more. Lovers of leatherwork should make a beeline for Tilba Leather, with its range of gorgeous leather shoes, bags, belts, wallets and more. Reva at Tilba works with passionate designers from all over the world who create quintessentially beautiful, unique, handmade pieces of jewellery - don't walk past it. Passionfish make their beautiful soy candles by hand; their shop smells divine. Take a tour with Tilba Talks Heritage Walks to discover some of Tilba's secrets from days gone by, sample locally made cheeses from Tilba Real Dairy and finish off with a delicious Devonshire tea.

Narooma Oyster Festival celebrates south coast seafood The Narooma Oyster Festival is on the first weekend of May (30 April - 1 May 2021) with a Covid-safe program that is focused on South Coast produce – think abalone, sea urchins and of course oysters! Festival Chair Cath Peachey said there is an incredible amount of collaboration with local oyster farmers, producers, chefs and festival partners this year. Paul West, South Coast chef turned oyster farmer, again joins the team infusing his ‘River Cottage Australia’ charm into the 2021 Festival. “We are all focused on what this festival celebrates – our pristine waters, our exceptional produce and most importantly, our famous oysters,” said Ms Peachey. A highlight this year is the revamped cooking program that matches visiting chefs to local producers with a focus on South Coast seafood that usually gets exported.
42
“It is a fantastic opportunity to taste high-end South Coast seafood that has previously been destined for the tables of top restaurants around the world,” said Ms Peachey. Whether you’re looking for great food experiences, cooking demonstrations, oyster master classes, cultural experiences including the bushtucker fire-pit or fun family entertainment, the 2021 program has it all, plus a few new additions including the River of Art Arts Alley. Join us in the seaside town of Narooma for a mouth-watering celebration of South Coast flavours. We recommend booking one of the Festival’s VIP experiences – the Long Table Dinner, Ultimate Oyster Experience or the luxe VIP Lounge. Due to Covid-19 requirements, tickets need to be pre-purchased and are on sale now from www.naroomaoysterfestival.com.

Memorable Mogo Mogo suffered a similar fate to Cobargo on New Year's Eve 2019, and just like Cobargo, Mogo has come together to support its community. After a long 2020, it feels like people are coming out of hibernation, and with warmer weather and plenty of rain, smiles are starting to return to people's faces. Mogo Wildlife Park has been a beacon of hope this year; after managing to save the Park from fire, more good news was came in August with the safe arrival of a male Rothschilds' giraffe. Another addition arrived on Australia Day 2021, with first-time mum Tuli unexpectedly giving birth in front of 30 - 40 delighted onlookers. She wasn't due until mid-February, and there was a chorus of hoorays as the calf made its way into the world. The Mogo Mall is up and running in the Charles St. car park behind the main street. Portable buildings donated by ATCO through the Business Council Australia's BizRebuild project were donated to house up to 10 Mogo businesses who lost their premises, equipment and
merchandise. Don't forget to wander over and say hello. Not everyone in Mogo was affected by fire; there are still lots of businesses trading as normal, but like Cobargo, they need more customers to help recover from losses caused by fires, followed by Covid19, then the great New Year's Eve dash by Victorians. So please put Mogo on your destination list - find some treasures in its specialty shops, and help this beautiful village get back on its feet.

Breathtaking Batemans Bay Things to See & Do Explore the Clyde River by boat, houseboat or kayak Taste some fresh oysters at the Oyster Shed Find the sculptures around town Visit the National Parks in the area, from hinterland forests to coastal gems VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE CLOSED Visit eurobodalla.com.au/ for information about the Eurobodalla region.
This regional centre and major tourist destination draws visitors from all over Australia for its natural beauty. That natural beauty was somewhat singed in last summer's bushfires, but the areas close to town are unaffected. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are within easy reach of town. The new Batemans Bay Bridge replacement project is progressing well, with all of the concrete bridge segments now in place. It is expected that the Bridge will be partially open by the middle of 2021. This massive undertaking will improve traffic flow, allow boats to sail underneath, rather than wait for the bridge to open, and upgrade facilities on the foreshore.
Follow the walking track from the Bridge all the way to Batehaven - you can walk, run, cycle, rollerblade, skate or ride your scooter. Keep an eye out for the beautiful sculptures dotted along the foreshore! Batemans Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, hotels and the Soldiers Club offering local seafood on the menu. There are plenty of options for live entertainment too, ranging from small restaurants and bars with more intimate gigs to the Soldiers Club, where the big names often perform. The Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as a cinema and animal park. There are plenty of family friendly beaches within an easy driving distance, or head north or south if you're looking for waves. There are also several National Parks to explore within a couple of hours driving distance - on the coast and to the west on the escarpment. Check the National Parks and Wildlife Services website for more information. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Drop a line in at one of the Bay's many beaches, estuaries and rivers, or head out on a fishing charter. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee, or head north to Durras. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
