From The Editor Welcome to the May/June edition of the Far South Coast iMag. What a spectacular autumn we're having...as I write this in midApril, our paddocks are green after more than 250mm of rain. The biggest event this May is the Narooma Oyster Festival, held on April 30th - May 1st; it's billed as "a mouth-watering celebration of South Coast flavours". There's more to it than oysters though - see more about the Festival on pages 42 - 43! New to the festival scene is the HeadLand Writers Festival, held at Tathra from May 14th - 16th. Featuring conversations, forums, workshops, poetry breakfasts, spoken word and music performances, panel discussions and more, it's going to be a thought-provoking weekend. Details are on pages 22 - 23. Three woodworking clubs have been getting together for 25 years to showcase the amazing things they've made with timber. They're celebrating their 25th anniversary this year with a huge exhibition at the Tilba Community Halls - entry is only $2 for adults and everyone will love it, including the kids. See page 32. If you or those you love are into live theatre, Spectrum Little Actors’ Theatre (SPLAT) are performing Disney's 'The Little Mermaid Junior'. You're invited to "bring the whole family along to this fun and colourful show and come and be part of our world under the sea". You'll find more information on page 35. Eden is the gateway to the beautiful Far South Coast from Victoria, and the township has been welcoming lots of visitors after bushfires and Covid 19. Experience Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. 'Old Tom' was a crucial part of the most extraordinary collaboration between humans and killer whales ever witnessed on earth. The Museum has a wonderful collection of artefacts from days gone by - book a tour to

Eden is one of the few places in the world where Humpback Whales feed on their migratory route, and with many other whale species travelling close to shore, it's the perfect place to go whale-watching. Book a cruise or head to the nearest headland or beach between September to November. Each year, there are more and more whales visiting; last year there were several 'mega-pods' - almost 100 whales were spotted feeding from Tathra to Eden - a truly spectacular sight. Local Aboriginal people (members of the Yuin nation) had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. Follow the Killer Whale Trail self-drive day tour that visits five historical sites around Twofold Bay and uncover the dramatic history of whaling from 1828 - 1930. Learn about the unique relationship between whalers and the wild killer whales (orcas). The journey can take half a day, or take a picnic and make a day of it. A visit to the iconic Green Cape Lighthouse is a must - it's steeped in seafaring history. Join a tour and climb its stairs for panoramic views of Disaster Bay. Eden Information Centre moves to Snug Cove The team at the Eden Visitor Information Centre are extremely excited about their new space at the Welcome Centre at Snug Cove. Port Authority NSW commenced building the Welcome Centre back in 2019, as a building to welcome cruise ship visitors to Eden. The building was completed in late April this year and houses the Eden Visitor Information Centre on the ground floor. In a bold move, the Information Centre sub-let a section of their area to the Bega Valley Regional Art Gallery who host satellite exhibitions in the space, entitled BVRG – PORT. “The move to the Eden Wharf has really turned into a fantastic collaboration, with multiple mutually beneficial relationships moving forward. We’re thrilled to be working with Port Authority of NSW, and sharing space with the gallery” said Clair Mudaliar, Manager, Eden Visitor Information Centre. The Information Centre was fortunate enough to obtain a grant to assist with design costs which enabled them to enlist the help of a

professional designer experienced in the design of visitor centres. “We really wanted to do justice to the amazing building Port Authority built, and felt it was very important to bring that through into our space, so our interior aligned with, and complimented the structure” Clair said. The building itself will become an icon of Eden’s wharf area, with impressive timber works using recycled timbers that are hundreds of years old. The Eden Visitor Information Centre looks forward to welcoming visitors to Eden in their stunning new harbourside space.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797; a marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafés, restaurant, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar and tea room. Panboola is located at the southern end of Pambula, and is a wonderful example of a community-led environmental restoration project. With hundreds of native trees, shrubs etc. planted, Panboola has transformed grazing paddocks into a thriving wetland area, with several walking tracks to explore. It's seasonally home to thousands of flying foxes who visit from Bega to feed on local flowering eucalypts. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the crystal clear water below. Head south on the Princes Highway and turn left to Pambula Lake - the operational base for several oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of Broadwater Oyster's delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Merimbula, the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast, really struggled in 2020, as did all our towns in the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla shires. Thousands of tourists evacuated during the summer bushfire crisis, then COVID19 hit, further decimating business incomes. Merimbula really does have something for everyone, with its beautiful beaches, lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and an array of attractions and accommodation. It's a great place to go shopping, with locally owned shops and boutiques lining the main street and tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with excellent coffee, delicious ice-cream and gelati, and restaurants that feature fresh local seafood, locally-grown produce and vegetarian/vegan options. Check out the walking tracks around town the walks from the Wharf to Spencer Park, the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen have spectacular views of the water. Other things to do include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.

The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. Please note the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is currently closed until further notice. If you're interested in the history of the Bega area, the Bega Pioneer Museum is a must. Described as a “time capsule” and managed by the Bega Valley Historical Society, it focuses on the collection, preservation and celebration of the history of Bega and surrounding districts. Currently open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am - 2pm, the Bega Pioneer Museum is a real treasure; children will be fascinated by the displays of items from 'the olden days'. There's a fantastic walking track that goes all the way from the sporting fields near the Bridge over to the Bega River, and then on to the Old Racecourse. The river banks are being restored, with weed control and revegation programs being implemented.

CWA State Conference in Bega Welcomes Visitors Bega is very fortunate to be hosting the 2021 Country Women’s Association of NSW State Conference from Sunday 2nd May - Friday 6th May. In addition to the Conference itself, there are a series of events open to the public, with Covid-safe conditions in place. First up is the CWA Country Market, held at the Bega Showgrounds on Sunday 2nd May from1pm - 5pm. Stall holders include Mystery Bay Kelp, Johanna Weiss with her artwork on linen, Jody Vassallo with her cookbook Farmer and Brave-Bottomed Wombat children’s book, Three Fat Ladies with their delicious regional food, Eden Preserves, Tilba Real Dairy, Paul West with his cookbook and growing guide The Edible Garden, Za’s Coffee Van, Bega Girl Guides with their hand-made jewellery and more. Acknowledging Bega's connection with the dairy industry, a highlight of the market is the ‘cow’ cake decorating competition, plus cow sculptures created by local school students. Local musicians Stitch, winners of the 2020 Australian National Busking Championships, will be providing live music. This unique female duo with bitchin' banjo & classical bassoon, play covers from vintage jazz through to retro pop with close harmony singing. An antique shop and an artisan jeweller are sharing one of the beautiful buildings that survived relatively unscathed. Via Luna changes its menu every day in its tiny kitchen, and is complemented by Valiant Coffee, operating out of a caravan set in a beautiful courtyard. Established favourites are still there, like Twig & Feather with divine homewares and the Cobargo General Store with fresh local produce and fabulous Cobargo Home Made Ice Cream. The Cobargo Markets, an initiative of Cobargo Creators, are on every Saturday from 8am 1pm. StunningTathra Like so many places on the Far South Coast, Tathra is a unique mix of old and new. Home to the iconic Tathra Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, the Wharf and the Tathra Pub are the best known buildings in town. Receiving its first cargo in 1858, the Wharf was an integral part of coastal trade for almost 95 years, with the last ship taking cargo from Tathra in 1954. It was vital for supplying nearby towns and villages with supplies from Sydney, and for transporting local produce back again. The Wharf is a great spot for fishing and to look out for whales, seals, dolphins and large sting rays, which can be seen near the wharf. The Tathra Hotel was originally named the Ocean View Hotel, when it was constructed in 1888. Following 18 months of renovations, today it combines heritage and contemporary features. The Hotel now features a micro brewery, a restaurant featuring local seasonal produce, new rooms and a small theatre. Thanks to the efforts of local firefighters, neither the Wharf or the Hotel were damaged by the bushfire that tore through Tathra in March 2018. Tathra was not impacted by the 2020 bushfires. Tathra is a fantastic base for a short or longer break, with a wide variety of outdoor activities

and its proximity to other destinations, such as Bermagui, Cobargo, Bega and Merimbula. The track from Tathra to the bridge at Mogareeka is always popular with those out for a stroll or a run, bike riders and skateboarders, and is great for younger children. The playground at Taylors Square was updated in 2019, with the design following the NSW Everyone Can Play guidelines. This new inclusive playspace is designed to be accessible by children of all abilities, with pathways and picnic tables constructed to similar standards. Tathra has a vibrant food scene focused on local produce, with excellent cafes, restaurants and a fine food providore who bakes artisan sourdough breads daily. And trying to determine who has the best coffee in town is quite the challenge! Tathra Beach is the heart of the town, with surfing, kayaking and swimming all popular. The Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club provide a great community service patrolling the beach during the summer months. Try snorkelling near the Wharf, or launch a boat from nearby Kianinny Bay. To explore the Bega River, head over the bridge at Mogareeka to the boat ramp. HeadLand Writers Festival launches in Tathra HeadLand Writers Festival is a new literature event on 14 to 16 May featuring conversations, forums, workshops, poetry breakfasts, spoken word and music performances, panel discussions and more. Tathra Hotel and Tathra Hall will be the principal venues for the event, with workshops and other events held at the Tathra Wharf Museum and Tathra Beach House. HeadLand features a wealth of local talent who live in, grew up or have strong connections to the area such as Ailsa Wild, Gary Lonesborough, Luke Horton and Mark McKenna. Their books are finding huge audiences both nationally and in the Bega Valley. Local Yuin man Gary Lonesborough’s novel ‘Boy from the Mish’ tells a deeply personal story of being young, black and queer and challenges the idyll of growing up in a coastal regional town. Ailsa Wild’s ‘The Care Factor’ recounts the experience of a frontline health worker during Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdowns. Mark McKenna’s ‘Return to

Uluru’ tells the story of the shooting at Uluru of Aboriginal man Yokunnuna by white policeman Bill McKinnon - exploring what truth telling and reconciliation look like today. In the Tathra Hall, we bring you in-depth conversations with Bruce Pascoe, Sofie Laguna and Linda Mottram. A short yet spectacular stroll down the magnificent headland to Tathra Hotel will take aspiring writers to a feast of industry forums including podcasting and how to get published. For the intrepid reader, head down to the historic Tathra Wharf Museum where actors will summon sirens, squalls and shipwrecks with ‘Tales from the Sea’. HeadLand Writers Festival is presented by South East Arts in partnership with Tathra Hotel, Candelo Books, South Coast Writers Centre and the Bega Valley Shire Council. Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkeling, boating and kayaking. The Continental Shelf is just 20km offshore, making Bermagui the closest point to the Shelf on the Australian east coast, and an ideal place to book a fishing charter. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. 25th Anniversary of Woodworking exhibition in Tilba For 25 years, members of the Narooma Woodies, the Eurobodalla Woodworking Guild (EWG)and the Bega Woodies have been putting their best pieces forward at their combined exhibition. Over the years, the membership of these clubs has changed, with women and young people becoming members. This blend of ages and genders has brought a new dimension to the clubs, with members collaborating together to produce beautiful pieces, both large and small. Despite the Eurobodalla Woodworking Guild losing everything in the New Years Day fires that tore through Mogo, its members have produced some amazing pieces for the Exhibition. They've also been trying to reestablish their workshop, and are determined not to give up until they are all working together and supporting each other again. Demonstrations this year will include turning, carving and toy making for children. There's a huge range of pieces for sale, including jewellery boxes, toys, furniture, ornaments,

The Big Hole, Deua National Park 3.5km return, Approx. 1.5 - 2.5 hours Thought to be around 400 million years in the making, this is an extraordinary limestone marvel; a roofless cave which is over 100m deep and 50m wide. It can be reached by walking from Berlang campground, wading across Shoalhaven River, then continuing through dry eucalypt forest and unique nana heath, with expansive views of the park on your journey. The vast open chasm can be viewed from the lookout and, if you’re there in the early morning or late afternoon, you may see its resident lyrebird come out from its ferny grotto to feed. For a more challenging hike, carry on to Marble Arch or return to Shoalhaven River for a picnic and a swim.

3. Goodenia Rainforest walking track, South East Forests NP 1.2km loop, 20 - 40 mins Discover a magnificent stand of cool temperate rainforest that is unique in this part of NSW. An excellent track for walking with children, the 1.2km nature walk leads down into a lush gully of ferns and understorey species. Enjoy the shade provided by the dense lilly pilly canopy and keep an eye out for moss-covered rocks, vines and quirky-looking beetles as you explore. if you have time, stop for a picnic or barbecue lunch in the picnic area.

2. Bingi Dreaming Track, Eurobodalla National Park 3km return, Approx. 2 hours Follow in the footsteps of the Brinja-Yuin people as you walk the Bingi Dreaming track. Traditionally, Dreaming tracks or Song Lines link the places visited by Aboriginal people. The Bingi Dreaming track links campsites, ceremonial and trade sites, fresh water and plentiful coastal food sources. Along the way, you might see stone artefacts or patches of shell middens. The walk passes through different types of coastal habitat; there are great opportunities for birdwatching among the heathlands, forests and lakeshores. You’re likely to see kangaroos and wallabies relaxing in the sun, as well as panoramic views of Gulaga (Mt Dromedary) and Baranguba (Montague Island). Stretching from Congo in the north to Tuross Head in the south, you can start the 14km walk from either end, or break it up into a few shorter walks to enjoy over a couple of days. There are lots of places to stop for a swim or picnic along the way, so don’t forget to take your swimmers and a towel.

Aboriginal people are the original occupants and inhabitants of Wagonga’s surrounding land and waterways. The traditional people of the area relied on the sea, the estuaries and the land to provide much of their food and sustenance for life. Narooma Oyster Festival celebrates south coast seafood The Narooma Oyster Festival is on the first weekend of May (30 April - 1 May 2021) with a Covid-safe program that is focused on South Coast produce – think abalone, sea urchins and of course oysters! Festival Chair Cath Peachey said there is an incredible amount of collaboration with local oyster farmers, producers, chefs and festival partners this year. Memorable Mogo The original inhabitants of Mogo are believed to be members of the Walbanga, Murrinjari and Bergalia tribes, who were part of the Yuin language group. Mogo was settled by non-indigenous people when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. Mogo was severely impacted during the New Year's Eve bushfires, but the residents and businesses are doing their best to move forward. Some homes have been completed, with others still in the construction phase. Businesses who lost their premises have been supported by ATCO through the Business Council Australia's BizRebuild project. Portable buildings were donated to house up to 10 Mogo businesses who lost their premises, equipment and merchandise. The 'Mogo Mall's has been up and running in the Charles St. car park behind the main street - wander over and check it out.

Head out on your bike in the Eurobodalla Two wheels are your passport to Eurobodalla’s many paths, tracks and trails – BYO or hire one when you get here. Ride to the beach, shops and out for lunch with almost 400kms of easy pathways and trails along the coast and through villages and towns. You’ll find viewing platforms with places to picnic, and spot whales and other wildlife, or simply enjoy the view. Mountain bike through one of many National Park and State Forests trails where every turn on the trail is a new adventure and discovery. State forests provide a natural bushland for a range of recreational trail use including mountain bike riding, four-wheel driving, horse riding and cross country running. You will find long and spectacular trails with smooth gravel and technical mountain trails perfect for down-hilling, and the Spotted Gum Trail north of Batemans Bay is 24 kilometres of easy to moderate cycling through a magical forest and its native bird population.

For those wanting a more leisurely pace, there’s plenty of cycling experiences waiting for you. You will see route numbers on cycling signage in Eurobodalla to help you navigate. Two easy favourites are from Broulee to North Head – a great flat route with a mixture of shared pathway and sand or gravel track through beautiful Bengello forest – and the scenic stretch on a shared concrete path from Narooma to Dalmeny following the shores of Wagonga Inlet, the Pacific Ocean and Mummuga Lake. This regional centre and major tourist destination draws visitors from all over Australia for its natural beauty. That natural beauty was somewhat singed in last summer's bushfires, but the areas close to town are unaffected. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are within easy reach of town. The new Batemans Bay Bridge is open! This massive undertaking improves traffic flow, allowing boats to sail underneath, rather than wait for the bridge to open. Follow the walking track from the Bridge all the way to Batehaven you can walk, run, cycle, rollerblade, skate or ride your scooter. Keep an eye out for the beautiful sculptures dotted along the foreshore!

Batemans Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, hotels and the Soldiers Club offering local seafood on the menu. There are plenty of options for live entertainment too, ranging from small restaurants and bars with more intimate gigs to the Soldiers Club, where the big names often perform. The Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as a cinema and animal park. There are plenty of family friendly beaches within an easy driving distance, or head north or south if you're looking for waves. There are also several National Parks to explore within a couple of hours driving distance - on the coast and to the west on the escarpment. Check the National Parks and Wildlife Services website for more information. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Drop a line in at one of the Bay's many beaches, estuaries and rivers, or head out on a fishing charter. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee, or head north to Durras.
