From The Editor Welcome to January/February summer edition of the Far South Coast iMag - it's so good to have interstate visitors back again! It really is starting to feel a little more normal with Covid restrictions significantly eased - let's hope it stays that way. Unfortunately though, several major events have been cancelled in 2021, causing even more economic damage to our region, already struggling to recover post-bushfire. We have been able to put together a What's On listing though, which is very exciting - things are starting to happen again! Check it out on pages 22 - 23. Montreal Goldfield have a Family Day on January 2nd - these days really fire the imagination as you step back in time to learn about mining in the 1880s. Children can write out a miners licence using a pen and ink, learn how to pan for gold and tour the Goldfield site. National Parks & Wildlife Service have their fantastic Discovery Program happening; it has a wide range of activities including some specifically for children, Aboriginal guided tours and family favourites. See page 16 for details. Sculpture Bermagui is on again in 2021; the organisers were very lucky that the 2020 event finished before Covid restrictions came into force. Seeing amazing sculptures in a spectacular outdoor setting really lifts the spirits...it's worth coming back to the coast for. Find out more on page 33. Eden is the gateway to the beautiful Far South Coast from Victoria, and the township made it through last summer's bushfires unscathed. Like many of our coastal and hinterland towns, it hasn't recorded any cases of COVID19, and is back to its beautiful best and ready to welcome visitors. Experience Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. 'Old Tom' was a crucial part of the most extraordinary collaboration between humans and killer

whales ever witnessed on earth. The Museum has a wonderful collection of artefacts from days gone by - book a tour to get the most from a visit. Eden is one of the few places in the world where Humpback Whales feed on their migratory route, and with many other whale species travelling close to shore, it's the perfect place to go whale-watching. Book a cruise or head to the nearest headland or beach between September to November. Each year, there are more and more whales visiting; this year there were several 'mega-pods' - almost 100 whales were spotted feeding from Tathra to Eden - a truly spectacular sight. Local Aboriginal people (members of the Yuin nation) had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. Head down to the Wharf to see the fishing boats and other vessels tied up alongside the dock. Some sections of the area's spectacular National Parks were affected by bushfires this summer. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797; a marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafés, restaurant, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar and tea room. Panboola is located at the southern end of Pambula, and is a wonderful example of a community-led environmental restoration project. With hundreds of native trees, shrubs etc. planted, Panboola has transformed grazing paddocks into a thriving wetland area, with several walking tracks to explore. It's seasonally home to thousands of flying foxes who visit from Bega to feed on local flowering eucalypts. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the crystal clear water below. Head south on the Princes Highway and turn left to Pambula Lake - the operational base for several oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of Broadwater Oyster's delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Panboola’s annual Ephemeral art festival on this April Go for a stroll, enjoy a picnic, ride your bike, watch the birds or simply just ‘be’ in nature. The Big Hole, Deua National Park 3.5km return, Approx. 1.5 - 2.5 hours Thought to be around 400 million years in the making, this is an extraordinary limestone marvel; a roofless cave which is over 100m deep and 50m wide. It can be reached by walking from Berlang campground, wading across Shoalhaven River, then continuing through dry eucalypt forest and unique nana heath, with expansive views of the park on your journey. The vast open chasm can be viewed from the lookout and, if you’re there in the early morning or late afternoon, you may see its resident lyrebird come out from its ferny grotto to feed. For a more challenging hike, carry on to Marble Arch or return to Shoalhaven River for a picnic and a swim.

4. Boyds Tower Walking Track, Ben Boyd National Park 0.8km, 15 - 45 mins. Park use fees apply. Please note - this area has been affected by fire Follow this gentle walking track and boardwalk around the imposing Boyds Tower. Find out about the eccentric entrepreneur Benjamin Boyd, who built Boyds Tower, only to never see it commissioned as a lighthouse. A 350m wheelchair-accessible boardwalk continues behind the tower to a lookout with beautiful views over Twofold Bay. Bring 12 a picnic along to enjoy at the informal picnic area.

3. Goodenia Rainforest walking track, South East Forests NP 1.2km loop, 20 - 40 mins Discover a magnificent stand of cool temperate rainforest that is unique in this part of NSW. An excellent track for walking with children, the 1.2km nature walk leads down into a lush gully of ferns and understorey species. Enjoy the shade provided by the dense lilly pilly canopy and keep an eye out for moss-covered rocks, vines and quirky-looking beetles as you explore. if you have time, stop for a picnic or barbecue lunch in the picnic area.

2. Bingi Dreaming Track, Eurobodalla National Park 3km return, Approx. 2 hours Follow in the footsteps of the Brinja-Yuin people as you walk the Bingi Dreaming track. Traditionally, Dreaming tracks or Song Lines link the places visited by Aboriginal people. The Bingi Dreaming track links campsites, ceremonial and trade sites, fresh water and plentiful coastal food sources. Along the way, you might see stone artefacts or patches of shell middens. The walk passes through different types of coastal habitat; there are great opportunities for birdwatching among the heathlands, forests and lakeshores. You’re likely to see kangaroos and wallabies relaxing in the sun, as well as panoramic views of Gulaga (Mt Dromedary) and Baranguba (Montague Island). Stretching from Congo in the north to Tuross Head in the south, you can start the 14km walk from either end, or break it up into a few shorter walks to enjoy over a couple of days. There are lots of places to stop for a swim or picnic along the way, so don’t forget to take your swimmers and a towel.

Merimbula, the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast, really struggled in 2020, as did all our towns in the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla shires. Thousands of tourists evacuated during the summer bushfire crisis, then COVID19 hit, further decimating business incomes. The region is back on it's feet again (just), so a big thank you to everyone who visits or stays in

Merimbula - your support means so much to local businesses. Merimbula really does have something for everyone, with its beautiful beaches, lakeside restaurants and cafĂŠs, great shopping and an array of attractions and accommodation. Merimbula has some great shopping, with locally owned shops and boutiques lining the main street and tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafĂŠs with excellent coffee, delicious ice-cream and gelati, and restaurants that feature fresh local seafood, locally-grown produce and vegetarian/vegan options. There are several walking tracks with beautiful views of the water - try the walks from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake, and around Fishpen. Other things to do include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

What a year! Thank you for choosing the Sapphire Coast for your holiday. This region is full of natural beauty, amazing beaches, spectacular headlands and wonderful wildlife. As locals we love sharing our favourite places with you! For the past 12 years we have operated boat based tours from Merimbula but this summer our sandbar is too shallow for us to safely cross. Therefore the ‘True Blue’ has moved to Bermagui and have purchased a new shallow draft RIB ‘Extreme.’ So if you are visiting the Sapphire Coast we have you covered! Over the summer we are operating a fantastic new Montague Island Discovery tour departing from Bermagui - we will take you out to Montague Island where we serve a delicious BBQ lunch which you can enjoy whilst watching the resident seals playing. We will also search for dolphins, seabirds and other wildlife. Once the tour is finished, head into Bermagui and wander around this trendy seaside village.

There’s a feast hidden in the forest, if you know what you’re looking for and where to find it. Join our Aboriginal Discovery Rangers for an exciting search for bush tucker and bush medicine. Explore Brogo Dam with Brogo Wilderness Canoes Summer is a great time to explore the inland waterways of the Far South Coast - the days are fine, the water is warm and with any luck the native bass will be biting. One of the best locations to go canoeing is the Brogo Dam, with its extensive catchment running back into the magnificent Brogo Wilderness area. The waterways are pristine, and the peaceful backwaters are a haven for local native bird life and fauna - sea eagles, swooping azure kingfishers, water dragons, goannas and shy echidnas have all been observed on and around the Dam. To really experience the beauty of the Brogo Dam, you need to get out on the water. Dave and Sue at Brogo Wilderness Canoes hire fully equipped canoes for a half day or full day, allowing plenty of time to check out the Dam. Their canoes are safe, stable “Canadians”, and all safety gear, maps and instructions are provided.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.

The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region - please ring to check that the Centre is open. The Heritage Centre is a wonderful reproduction of the original butter factory that was situated on the site in the early 20th century and has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's. It provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about the region. Bega has a thriving arts community with its Regional Gallery which hosts major touring exhibitions, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery and Field Martin Art Studio/Gallery. There's a fantastic walking track that goes all the way from the sporting fields near the Bridge over to the Bega River, and then on to the Old Racecourse. The river banks are being restored, with weed control and revegation programs being implemented.

The Monday Morning Group exhibition at Spiral Gallery The Monday Morning group are a collective of local artists, who are all members of the Bega Art and Craft Society. We meet together each Monday at the Seventh Day Adventist Hall in Bega to work and share ideas on our approach to our artistic endeavours. After our previously successful shows at Spiral Gallery, we have decided to hold another exhibition to showcase the work of our group of dedicated artists. Our new exhibition will be held at Spiral from 15th January to the 4th February 2021. As the natural world at present struggles as we do to adapt to the changing and evolving environment, we have drawn our inspiration for this show from the diversity and wonders of the animal and insect world.

SCULPTURE BERMAGUI 6th - 14th March, Bermagui In 2020, Sculpture Bermagui were very lucky to hold their event before COVID restrictions took hold,making the event all the more special. A record number of sterling entries were displayed, despite many exhibitors being affected by fires and floods. Sculpture Bermagui 2021 is again presenting thoughtprovoking, exquisite pieces both large and small, with many entries received. The optional theme for the exhibition is ‘On the Other Side’; no doubt there will be some interesting and diverse interpretations of this idea. This year, the indoor sculptures will be housed in the Surf Club on Horseshoe Bay. This venue, with it’s stunning outlook towards mother Gulaga, is a remarkable site. The Indoor and Outdoor sculptures will be arranged around the 'U' of Horseshoe Bay, providing a seamless flow of all exhibits and enhancing the overall viewing experience. StunningTathra Like so many places on the Far South Coast, Tathra is a unique mix of old and new. Home to the iconic Tathra Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, the Wharf and the Tathra Pub are the best known buildings in town. Receiving its first cargo in 1858, the Wharf was an integral part of coastal trade for almost 95 years, with the last ship taking cargo from Tathra in 1954. It was vital for supplying nearby towns and villages with supplies from Sydney, and for transporting local produce back again. The Wharf is a great spot for fishing and to look out for whales, seals, dolphins and large sting rays, which can be seen near the wharf. The Tathra Hotel was originally named the Ocean View Hotel, when it was constructed in 1888. Following 18 months of renovations, today it combines heritage and contemporary features. The Hotel now features a micro brewery, a restaurant featuring local seasonal produce, new rooms and a small theatre. Thanks to the efforts of local firefighters, neither the Wharf or the Hotel were damaged by the bushfire that tore through Tathra in March 2018. Tathra was not impacted by the 2020 bushfires. Tathra is a fantastic base for a short or longer break, with a wide variety of outdoor activities

and its proximity to other destinations, such as Bermagui, Cobargo, Bega and Merimbula. The track from Tathra to the bridge at Mogareeka is always popular with those out for a stroll or a run, bike riders and skateboarders, and is great for younger children. The playground at Taylors Square was updated in 2019, with the design following the NSW Everyone Can Play guidelines. This new inclusive playspace is designed to be accessible by children of all abilities, with pathways and picnic tables constructed to similar standards. Tathra has a vibrant food scene focused on local produce, with excellent cafes, restaurants and a fine food providore who bakes artisan sourdough breads daily. And trying to determine who has the best coffee in town is quite the challenge! Tathra Beach is the heart of the town, with surfing, kayaking and swimming all popular. The Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club provide a great community service patrolling the beach during the summer months. Try snorkelling near the Wharf, or launch a boat from nearby Kianinny Bay. To explore the Bega River, head over the bridge at Mogareeka to the boat ramp. There are lots of accommodation options in Tathra, from camping in nearby National Parks to caravan parks, cabins and four star resorts.

Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkeling, boating and kayaking. The Continental Shelf is just 20km offshore, making Bermagui the closest point to the Shelf on the Australian east coast, and an ideal place to book a fishing charter. If you'd prefer to stick to the shore, throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River.

Don't miss a swim in the beautiful Blue Pool, set on the edge of the ocean at the base of the cliffs off Pacific Drive. Try out the 18 hole golf course, hit a ball around the tennis courts or play bowls or croquet at the Bermagui Country Club. Bermagui has its very own Art Trail; it's well worth setting aside a day delving into the collections of these galleries. You'll find Shop7 Art Space at the Fishermens Wharf, whilst Bermagui Mudworks and Grimm-Hewitt Studio/Gallery (please ring Nicole's studio first) are just south of town. Go bush walking or bird watching in the surrounding National Parks and State Forests. Take a stroll through the Fishermens Wharf complex, with its retail outlets, galleries, restaurants and cafés. Close to Bermagui, Wallaga Lake is one of the largest coastal lakes in NSW, an area of outstanding natural beauty with special significance for local Aboriginal people. Montreal Goldfield at Wallaga Lake is Australia's only Goldfield that goes to the sea, and has guided tours daily. Check the Goldfield's Facebook page for opening times. The Camel Rock Brewery and Cafe, located in the Wallaga Lake Big 4 Holiday Park has craft beers on tap and American-influenced food.

Sculpture Bermagui 'On the Other Side' Well, we had the luck of the Irish to be able to run the 2020 exhibition between the fires, floods and Covid. It seems even more special than ever before, partly because of this, but mainly because it was special! There was a record number of exhibits of sterling quality and visitors aplenty, thankful that some sort of normality had returned, who flocked to see the sculptures. We trust that disasters and crises are over… and that 2021 will be more peaceful. The 2021 exhibition however is shaping up to be even more exciting. Interest from the art community is at an all-time high, with a healthy number of sculptors keen to exhibit this March. The optional ‘theme’ for the 2021 exhibition is ‘On the Other Side’. We are anticipating some interesting and diverse interpretations of this idea. We are very lucky indeed to have such a quality exhibition to look forward to. This year, we are also rolling out a schools program. Increasing student participation with the exhibition in several different ways has long been an ambition of the committee, and this year it may actually come to fruition. Edward Willson’s ‘Fluidity, ’ chosen from the 2020 exhibition as the Bermagui Business Award, was recently installed beside the 777 supermarket and narrowly escaped demolition after a wayward vehicle collided with the walled garden. We are pleased to report that

it is undamaged and we thank Rhonda Drakos for hosting this sculpture. It can be enjoyed by locals and tourists on a daily basis and brings sculpture into our everyday lives. The Committee is committed to the goal of eventually developing an extensive and diverse collection of quality sculptures that are permanently installed around Bermagui for locals and visitors to appreciate. Big news! We have a new venue for the indoor sculptures! The community hall has served faithfully for many years, but an opportunity arose to exhibit in the Surf Club on Horseshoe Bay. This venue with its stunning outlook towards mother Gulaga is a remarkable site. The Indoor and Outdoor sculptures are now arranged around the U of Horseshoe Bay, providing a seamless flow of all exhibits which will enhance the overall viewing experience. All in all, hold on to your hats, folks! The 2021 SCULPTURE Bermagui exhibition, running from 6th – 14th March, is shaping up to be unmissable!

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilbaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. 36

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has maintained its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Memorable Mogo Mogo suffered a similar fate to Cobargo on New Year's Eve 2019, and just like Cobargo, Mogo has come together to support its community. After a long winter, it feels like people are coming out of hibernation, and the beautiful spring weather, backed up by much welcome rain, has really put a smile on people's faces. Mogo Wildlife Park has been a beacon of hope this year; after managing to save the Park from fire, more good news was came in August with the safe arrival of a male Rothschilds' giraffe. Mum Binti delivered her first baby in just under three hours, even though he was he 6 foot tall! She has proudly added to the herd of giraffes, which now has nine members. The Mogo Mall is up and running in the Charles St. car park behind the main street. Portable buildings donated by ATCO through the Business Council Australia's BizRebuild project were donated to house up to 10 Mogo businesses who lost their premises, equipment and merchandise. This regional centre and major tourist destination draws visitors from all over Australia for its natural beauty. That natural beauty was somewhat singed in last summer's bushfires, but the areas close to town are unaffected. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are within easy reach of town. The new Batemans Bay Bridge replacement project is progressing well, with the barges leaving in November, and all of the concrete bridge segments now in place. It is expected that the Bridge will be partially open by the middle of 2021. This massive undertaking will improve traffic flow, allow boats to sail underneath, rather than wait for the bridge to open, and upgrade facilities on the foreshore.

Follow the walking track from the Bridge all the way to Batehaven - you can walk, run, cycle, rollerblade, skate or ride your scooter. Keep an eye out for the beautiful sculptures dotted along the foreshore! Batemans Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, hotels and the Soldiers Club offering local seafood on the menu. There are plenty of options for live entertainment too, ranging from small restaurants and bars with more intimate gigs to the Soldiers Club, where the big names often perform. In previous years, Batemans Bay has hosted the Red Hot Summer tour - dates are still to be confirmed for 2021. The Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as a cinema and animal park. There are plenty of family friendly beaches within an easy driving distance, or head north or south if you're looking for waves. There are also several National Parks to explore within a couple of hours driving distance - on the coast and to the west on the escarpment.
