Perth Mint – the early days…

The brainchild of then Western Australian Premier, Sir John Forrest, the Perth branch of the Royal Mint opened amid much fanfare in June 1899. The mint would ultimately become crucial to the gold coin production of the British Empire – but all did not run smoothly at first.

The mint had been established to transform the raw gold of the Western Australian goldfields into coins of the realm, with Forrest determined to stop gold flowing out of the colony. Only problem was, delays in construction and spiralling costs had led to huge criticism, and the value of even having a mint was the subject of fierce debate. With an

atmosphere of uncertainty enveloping the very existence of the Perth Mint, businesses and banks preferred to send raw gold either to the east or London – having a direct impact on the mint’s early coin production.

The turmoil of the period is evidenced by the Perth Mint’s first sovereign and half sovereign – struck in 1899 and 1900 respectively. With the 1899P Sovereign having the lowest mintage of the Perth Mint series (just 691,000!) and just 119,000 of the 1900P Half Sovereign struck, these key dates are scarce to rare – and rarely seen at a price like that offered here!

Instead of hitting the middle of the reverse design with the colour motif, the RAM scored a ‘bullseye’ on the Queen’s portrait! One of a handful of known $2 Bullseyes, this coin was retrieved from a RAM Roll and is in Uncirculated quality.

Rare Error – exceptional Choice Unc quality

Rare in any condition, this sensational RAM Error is a rarity of the highest order in superior grade – as here. While this undated 1970s 20c should have been struck on a 28.50mm flan, it was instead struck on the much smaller 23.60mm 10c flan! An immaculate example, this great rarity has been graded at MS64 – Choice Uncirculated!

Rare and fascinating, this 1988-dated 5c should have been struck from a 2.83g cupro-nickel blank – but was instead struck from a 2.59g copper blank used for Australia’s 1c!
