The rare 1967 Goose Pattern Dollar!

Seen by many as the ‘Crowning Glory’ of a serious decimal collection, the 1967 Goose $1 plays a key role in the history of Australian numismatics. Imposing, majestic and scarce, we are delighted to present a breathtaking array of examples of this important Australian pattern.

The 1967 Goose $1 was designed by leading sculptor and medallist Andor Mészáros – the man who created designs that came so close to being chosen for Australia’s decimal coinage in 1963. Based on the motifs of his entries for the decimal 2c and 20c, Mészáros’ Goose $1 design won an Australian Coin Review (ACR) competition, held in response to the rather controversial absence of a $1 coin denomination when Australia’s new decimal currency had been unveiled.

Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, the Goose $1 design was officially submitted to the Commonwealth, and – unsurprisingly –officially rejected. This led the ACR to have the Goose $1 privately minted by medallists John Pinches of London. Struck from 28.70g of sterling silver, the mintage of the plain-edge 1967 Goose $1 Proof was a mere 750, with 1,500 examples of the milled-edge 1967 Goose $1 Unc issued.
