Complete Proclamation of 1800 11-Coin Collection Extremely Fine-Uncirculated

The finest 1813 NSW Dump offered by Downies

One of the first two coin types struck on Australian shores, along with the 1813 Holey Dollar, the 1813 NSW Dump represents a compelling combination of extreme rarity and rich colonial history. Created by punching the centre from Spanish Silver 8 Reales coins, and part of an attempt by Governor Macquarie to keep currency in the colony, the 1813 NSW Dump is known by less than 1,000 examples. It is one of Australia’s most important rarities.

A tantalising opportunity for the serious collector, the coin before you is the finest 1813 NSW Dump offered by Downies in more than 90 years in the industry.

Excessively rare D/2 Type!

One of the great icons of Australian numismatics, and a rarity of world standing, we are proud to present a truly spectacular example of the 1813 NSW Silver Dump D/2 Type – a type that is seldom seen on the market in any grade!

When legal tender status was withdrawn in 1829, most Dumps were swapped for British currency or melted down. It is thought that less than 1,000 exist today, with only a tiny percentage of the D/2 type. Instantly identifiable as a D/2, the cross on the crown points between the ‘U’ and ‘T’ in ‘SOUTH’, there are stops between the words ‘NEW’, ‘SOUTH’ and ‘WALES’, and the pearls in the crown are equal in size and touch the top of the band.

A vast majority of the surviving examples of the D/2 type are very well worn, with a minuscule number in better grade.

Featuring strong detail in the lettering and the crown, with traces of the original Spanish-American 8 Reales host coin, the D/2 coin before you has been graded by PCGS at XF45. Unusually for a D/2, the date is very clear and completely on the flan – testimony to the seldom seen quality of the coin.

With the D/2 type approximately three times as rare as the rare A/1 Type, and Downies never having offered a better example of the 1813 NSW Silver Dump, regardless of the type, the chance to secure an example in this stunning state of preservation deserves the most serious of consideration.

First Banknotes –First Prefixes!

Introducing some of the very first banknotes issued into circulation at Decimal Changeover, we are delighted to present the First Prefix issues of our first $1 note, first $10 note and first $20 note – all in strictly Uncirculated condition!

Arguably the greatest milestone in Australian currency history, decimalisation took place in February 1966. Alongside our six decimal coinage denominations, four banknotes were unveiled –the Coombs/Wilson $1, $2, $10 & $20. The very first notes of the $1, $10 and $20 denominations carried the prefixes AAA, SAA and XAA respectively. Naturally popular as the ‘first of their kind’, the 1966 Coombs/Wilson First Prefix issues are also sought after for their rarity in superior quality.

It is widely acknowledged now that, whether preFederation or Commonwealth, paper or polymer, the notes that are most desired are those bearing a First Prefix – and yet this interest in First Prefix issues is a relatively recent phenomenon. In 1966, there was little awareness of the importance of such notes, and the AAA $1, SAA $10 and XAA $20 were rarely set aside at the time of issue. As a result, they are scarce in the upper echelons of quality.

We have just a few examples of the 1966 Coombs/ Wilson AAA $1, SAA $10 and XAA $20 First Prefix notes available – all in Uncirculated condition – so immediate action is essential.

Inflation saw the introduction of the $50 in 1973, but even given Australia’s inflationary economy at the time, $50 was still a lot of money. Naturally, few of the new $50 were set aside at the time of issue, and the very first notes –bearing the First Prefix YAA – are very scarce in Uncirculated condition, as here. Just a few in stock!

A decade after the launch of the $50, inflation saw to it that a new high denomination was required – the $100! Affectionately known as ‘the Grey Ghost’, the first of the new $100 paper notes bore the First Prefix ZAA. Seldom popped away for posterity, and highly sought after today, the First Prefix ZAA $100 is very scarce in premium grade.
