A M E S SAG E FRO M PASTO R ADAM S I N N E T T Six years ago, a handful of us began to pray and dream about planting a gospel-saturated, Jesuscentered, biblically-anchored, missionally-driven, peopleloving church in the heart of our beloved city. Over ten months we unpacked the gospel and its implications for our lives, shared the good news of Jesus with notyet-believing friends, served the city in practical ways, helped one another move downtown, prayed like crazy, and basically invited anyone with a pulse to join us. We were desperate for God to show up. Then, on the first Sunday of April in 2011 we marked our “birth” as a small, scrappy, newly-forming church in Pioneer Square. It was beautiful, encouraging, and absolutely frightening. I remember thinking, “Is this going to work? This is impossible.” And it was. Humanly speaking, planting a church is impossible. So without any other options, we simply continued to do what we had always done: trust Jesus, love people, share the gospel, and pray big.

It has now been five years since our “birth.” Since then we have moved 6 times, planted 16 communities, celebrated 52 baptisms, welcomed 191 covenant members, studied 10 books of the Bible, supported a dozen church plants, invested hundreds of hours in serving our city, landed in a more permanent building, and now host close to 600 people every Sunday - and those are just the things that can be measured! Being part of a church plant is like watching God unfold a miracle in slow motion. Jesus is doing the impossible. This updated prospectus captures the essence of who we are and where, by God’s grace, we hope to go. Though much has changed, our reason for being hasn’t.

We exist to build a great city through the gospel of Jesus Christ for the glory of God. We want to see as many people as possible, from the avenues to the alleyways, meet Jesus and live as life was intended, in Him. We are part of God’s unfolding story, in our generation, in this city. Jesus is the cornerstone of our lives, our church, and reality itself. We love Him because He first loved us. He is with us and is going before us. He has only just begun His good work in, and through, us. With Him, all things are possible. Let’s ask Him to do what only He can, for the glory of His name, and the joy of as many as possible. Christ is all, Adam Sinnett

A M E S SAG E FRO M PASTO R DAVI D PAR K ER As one of your pastors, I have the privilege of getting a front row seat in seeing God work in many ways that often go unseen. It’s truly been a joy to watch and participate in Jesus’ work in and among us: from managing building details to marrying couples, from seeing friends trust Christ to watching them get baptized. God is moving among us! I’m humbled by Jesus’ unfailing love, pursuit, and adoption of me as a son of the King. I’m amazed and so thankful for God’s grace to us as a church. Many of you know that adoption has and continues to be a big part of our family. Not only because we’ve had the privilege and opportunity to recently adopt for a second time, but it’s through adoption that I’ve been reminded of the specific and covenantal love God has for us. It’s through our adoption in Jesus that we get to participate in being a part of this beautiful church family that God is weaving 3

together. Although we come from different walks of life, ages, social classes, and races, God is bringing us together to display His glories right here in Seattle! One of my prayers for the years ahead is that Jesus would continue to form us into a people who are deeply anchored in His love. Out of His love will flow our love for each other and a love for our friends and neighbors in this city. Let’s pray together for more conversions, more repentance, and more of Jesus’ great name to be treasured among us, and within this city. I’m so thankful for the opportunity to labor alongside you all for the sake of the gospel in this city. I thank Jesus often for all of you and the ways He continues to use this church to draw me, and others, into a deeper faith and trust in Him. Grace and Peace, David Parker

WHO WE ARE

W H AT W E B ELI E V E

W H AT W E WA NT TO B E K N OW N FO R

We exist to build a great city through the gospel of Jesus Christ for the glory of God by:

We stand in the tradition of historical evangelical confessionalism, affirming the Apostles’, Nicene and Athanasian creeds. While our full doctrinal statement is available online, we do wish to make known our conviction on the following six theologically-driven values:

Downtown Cornerstone will, by God’s grace, be known for:

■ Prayerfully seeking conversions through evangelism

■ The authority, necessity and sufficiency of the Bible

■ Sacrificial service to, and engagement with, our city

■ Centrality of the gospel of Jesus to all of life

■ Planting churches that plant churches

■ Nurturing disciple-making disciples who engage in their context for Jesus ■ Multiplying gospel-centered communities scattered throughout the city ■ Engaging culture by integrating faith at work and within the arts ■ Sacrificially serving as we’ve been sacrificially served by God, in Jesus ■ Planting churches to spread the gospel from the neighborhoods of Seattle to the nations of world

■ Trusting and treasuring all that God is, and is for us, in Jesus Christ ■ Pursuing holiness and humility

■ The sovereignty of God in saving sinners ■ The work of the Holy Spirit for life and ministry ■ The equality of men and women, with men as responsible servant leaders within the home and church ■ The local church as God’s primary mission strategy

“ B U I LD A G R E AT C IT Y ” A great city, as the Bible depicts it, is one in which Jesus is trusted and treasured, sin is forgiven, lives are changed, hope is restored, meaning is discovered, and joy is made full as people are brought into relationship with the God who made them and loves them. All of this comes to us through the gospel of Jesus Christ. We get to partner with God in His redemptive city-building work. “ TH RO U G H TH E G OS P EL O F J E S U S CHRIST” Politics, activism, ritual, or mere do-goodism cannot change

the human heart. Only a living relationship with the living God of the universe can do that. That is what is offered to us in the gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel is the good news that Jesus came to live, die, and rise again for the forgiveness of sin to bring us home to God, now and forever. This news changes everything and is for everyone. “ FO R TH E G LO RY O F GOD” The triune God is the blazing center of reality. He is God and there is no other (Isa 46:9). We exist for Him and His glory (1 Cor 10:31).

OUR VALUES JESUS

C IT Y

MISSION

He is fully God and fully man. He is the second member of the trinitarian godhead. All things were created by Him, for Him and through Him. He is the Alpha and Omega, the first and last, the beginning and end. He is the cornerstone of the church and reality itself.

We love Seattle. We live, work, play, and raise our families here. The city is a strategic center of spiritual, social, and cultural influence. We are here to bring the gospel to bear in the every day, serving as a faithful presence in our favorite city.

Our prayerful aim is to see as many people as possible, locally and globally, experience the sin-cleansing, shame-removing, life-changing, world-altering offer of Jesus in the gospel.

G OS P EL The gospel is the good news that Jesus came to live, die, and rise again for the forgiveness of sin to bring redeemed sinners under God’s gracious reign. The gospel brings us home to God for life that is truly life – every day.

C H U RC H Jesus’ church is a redeemed people, not a place, meeting, or building. From beginning to end God’s aim is to glorify Himself through a people, His people, who he is calling out from all tribes, peoples and languages through Jesus’ gospel. We are a local expression of that.

M ERC Y We are committed to building a great city, not just a great church, through justice, mercy, creativity, and partnership, sacrificially serving as we’ve been sacrificially served by Jesus. M U LTI P LI C ATI O N Do it all again...everywhere.

OUR HISTORY

11

God uses every day spaces as stages for His glory and the transformation of lives. Yes, God uses people. But, He uses people in spaces: arks, prison cells, tents, deserts, whale bellies, castles, baskets, stables, and more. God uses spaces as stages for his redemptive story to unfold. We have seen this firsthand as a church over the last five years.

In that time, we have met in a 31st story conference room, an 850 sq. ft. apartment, an 11th floor community space, an underground bunker in Pioneer Square, a glass encased alley, multiple movie theaters, and (currently) a former nightclub. God uses spaces. Here’s a brief history of where we’ve been.

In many ways, the most important fruit is unmeasurable. Who can measure increased joy in the Lord, or Spirit-led perseverance amidst hardship, or the number of hearts re-captured by the love of God, or how many walked out of bondage to sin because of the prayers of others, or how many restructured their calendars and budgets to place God first, or how many saw obedience turn from duty to delight, or how many seeds of the gospel were sown throughout our city this year? God is at work among us in ways often unseen. Yet, in other ways, some movements of His grace are more easily measured. What follows is a brief snapshot of some of His quantifiable kindness towards us.

From beginning to end, God’s aim is to glorify Himself through a people He is calling out from all tribes of the world and all neighborhoods of Seattle through the gospel. He calls this community of people the church. Downtown Cornerstone is not just interested in holding events but for people to connect, share life, and form communities that are deeply rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ. These are communities of diverse imperfect people that are committed to living out the implications of the gospel in every sphere of life. These are communities of radical grace, sacrificial service, and joy. These are communities that eat together, pray together, laugh together, and study the Bible together (i.e. share life). These are communities that build up the church by encouraging people to faith in Jesus Christ and build up the city through deeds of justice and mercy. These are communities where you can be who God created you to

be, yourself. It’s our hope and prayer that everyone who calls Downtown Cornerstone home will find such community. It has been beautiful to see Jesus move and work in meaningful ways in the lives of our people and He has used Cornerstone Communities as a significant means of grace. Together we have learned more about what it means to grow in our relationship with the Lord, each other, and to engage our neighborhoods in ways that are relevant and missional. While the localized expressions of each of our communities look different, their commitment to the Word, prayer, meaningful relationships, and sharing the gospel has not wavered. We have been reminded again and again that community is worth fighting for, and we have seen that joy comes when we pursue Jesus together.

The worship arts ministry – which includes music, production, design, and visual arts – exists to passionately lead people to encounter the true and living God through song, scripture, art, and media. We do this by declaring and displaying the gospel of Jesus Christ through a host of creative forms for our church and our city. In short, our desire is for everyone everywhere to behold the beauty, glory and grace of our God and to be changed by it.

Cornerstone Kids seeks to partner with parents to raise up children that genuinely enjoy God, redemptively engage the city, and reach the world. We get to do this by displaying and declaring Jesus as the Hero of God’s story throughout the Bible and in our lives every Sunday, and supporting parents to do the same throughout the week. Our prayer is that true hope would take root in the next generation in this city and around the world!

The goal of our Sunday serving teams has been to welcome others as we’ve been welcomed by Jesus. Each week, we have the opportunity to “set the table” for our gatherings. Whether it’s by making coffee, passing out handouts, sending follow-up emails, or serving as security, our desire is to see more people welcomed into our family and grow in relationship with God and one another in a meaningful way.

CHURCH PLANTING We believe the local church is God’s primary mission strategy for spreading the gospel of Jesus from the neighborhoods of Seattle to the nations of the world. Therefore, our primary aim is to see many gospel-centered, Jesus-loving, Bible-believing churches planted. To do that, we have a three-fold strategy. First, we give 10% of our giving to local and global church planting efforts. Second, we prioritize the on-going training and development of future planters and pastors. Third, as a church, we belong to Acts 29 for resource-sharing, training, networking, and accountability. What follows on these pages are personal notes of thanks and stories from a number of church planters we are currently supporting. T RUE LIFE CHURC H D EN V ER , CO

“Hunter was dragged to church by a friend. He had been to church a couple times as a kid and that’s it. Pretty much zero understanding of anything relating to Christianity. But he knew he was a sinner. When he heard that Jesus had taken his place on the cross he was filled with joy. He got baptized on Easter, joined a community, and is growing a ton. He’s now trying to lead his Mom to Jesus. His Mom came up to me and thanked me for whatever we are doing and said she has seen such a change in her boy.” C A L E B DAV IS

R ESTORE BRAZ I L R IO D E JA N EIR O, BR A ZI L

“Our work in Brazil continued strong this year with over 240 men participating in our annual conference, considering the implications of planting missional churches. Additionally, we continue to see over 120 pastors and potential church planters participating in our monthly regionals, and in Rio de Janeiro and Såo Paulo we’ve started two church planting residencies called Project Plantador. Our prayerful aim is to start 10 new gospel-centered churches in each megacity. Lastly, along with our church plant (Igreja do Redentor), our mercy 21

ministry in the City of God continues to deepen, where we now have a house. Movement is happening, and we are so thankful for God’s grace to us and the support of DCC.” JAY B AUMA N

TA P R O OT TW I N FA L L S , I D

“Taproot is in a season of preparation. Over the past year we have worked hard to establish the gospel as the foundation for all we are and do. In this, we’ve seen beautiful life transformation as people who have been in the church for 20, 30, and 40 years plus, are experiencing gospel renewal for the first time. With this new found love for Jesus and understanding of what he has done, we are being prepared to be moved forward by the Holy Spirit in engaging Twin Falls with this good news! We’re praying the harvest would be great.” MI KE LI TTLETON

“Kike began visiting us because he drove his friend to our bible study one night. We invited him to stay the very first time we met him and he hasn’t stopped coming ever since.

As he heard the gospel every Wednesday, he felt the Lord convicting him of his sin. Last November, he stepped away from that old lifestyle and began to walk with Jesus. Today he is on our leadership team and is actively involved in our church plant. But the most exciting part is that he was the first person baptized during our church launch, along with two other young men! It been so exciting to see the power of God at work in Mexico City!” J E S Ú S R O D R ÍG U EZ

R EDEEMER BOSTON BOSTON , M A

“Right now, we are celebrating a few specific stories of God's faithfulness to advance the gospel through our church plant. We've seen God at work in our family's next door neighbor, a lifelong Bostonian, who has plugged into Redeemer, returning to church for the first time in 15 years. We're celebrating two young men from the neighborhood taking their first dive into Bible study after visiting Redeemer. Steadily and faithfully, God is growing us in Jesus and adding to our number as the gospel goes forward. Thank you, DCC, for participating in Christ's work in Boston!” C L AU D E ATC HO

CEN TER CHURCH I RV I N E, C A

“We praise God for this past year of being on the mission of 'making everyday disciples.' While we are still praying for more baptisms, we are thankful for each family and individual Jesus calls to worship with us and who are learning what following Christ looks like. We are praying for forty committed followers of Christ as we head into 2016.” SA M U E L C H O I

Acts 29 is a diverse, global network of over 600 church-planting churches. It is not a denomination, but a network of like‑minded churches spanning around the globe characterized by theological clarity, cultural engagement, and missional innovation. Acts 29 emphasizes identifying, assessing, coaching, and supporting church planters and church-planting churches. 22

BUDGET 2015–2016 While money makes for a terrible god, it is a great tool for advancing the gospel of God and the good of others. Consider all that we have accomplished together through our collective financial generosity this year. We have funded church planting locally and globally (pages 14, 21). We offered weekly hospitality to hundreds, allowing new friendships to be formed and new life to be found in Jesus. We offered tangible help and mercy to many (page 19). We supported five full-time staff focused on leading, feeding, protecting and multiplying the flock. We work hard before God to make every dollar count. Here’s a snapshot of our overall financial picture.

This pastoral support team includes:
