“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. E P H E S I A NS 3:20-21 4

A MESSAGE FROM PA STOR ADA M Being part of a church plant is like watching God unfold a miracle over time. It was not long ago that we, as a people, did not even exist. God is gracious! It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to be part of what He is doing in and through this church. Without question, every church is a unique work of the Holy Spirit, but I am deeply grateful to be part of this one. Though much has changed over our short amount of time together, our reason for being hasn’t. We exist to build a great city through the gospel of Jesus Christ for the glory of God. We want to see as many people as possible, from the avenues to the alleyways, meet Jesus and experience life as it was intended to be, in Him, now and forever. We are part of God’s unfolding story, in our generation, in our city. In our early days we put together a prospectus that outlined who and what we believed Jesus was

calling us to be and do in our city. That was four years ago and most of you were not with us then. In light of that, we have created this annual report—our first ever— as an updated resource that captures who we are and where, by God’s grace, we are going. There’s a lot of grace contained within these pages. In this report we recount evidences of God’s movement among us, articulate who we are, introduce leaders, provide ministry updates, highlight fun statistics, offer a brief financial recap, and share our prayerful focus for the next season of life and mission together. We hope you find it to be life-giving, faith-building and God-exalting.

are true and they cannot fail. He alone is worthy of our days, dollars and devotion. We continue to envision thousands of people, from many churches and church plants, from many parts of Seattle, united under a new identity in Jesus and sent to love, serve and challenge the city with the gospel. I invite you to join us in being part of seeing that vision become even more of a reality in the days ahead. Together, as always, let’s ask Him to do what only He can. Christ is all, ADAM SI N N ET T LEAD PAS TOR

Jesus is our cornerstone. We love Him because He first loved us. May He keep us on fire for His supremacy in all things in the year to come. Let’s lean on who God is and all that He is for us, in Christ. His promises 5

“To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 1 T I M OT H Y 1:17 6

A MESSAGE FROM PA STOR DAVID It was a joy to serve and partner with all of you this year. I’m continually humbled that God would choose any of us to be his children, let alone invite us to play in His unfolding story! As your Executive Pastor, one of my roles is to help lead us organizationally and operationally. Along with the day-to-day administrative responsibilities, this year I also had the privilege of launching our year long discipleship program with over 25 folks, leading a team to Brazil to aid in church planting efforts, and supporting our Cornerstone Communities. Personally, I’ve never been part of a church where I’m more excited to be a member, not to mention help lead. I couldn’t be more thankful for such a talented, humble, and Jesus-loving team to labor with. One of the things that pervades most of what I do is details, and lots of them. Some people hate details, some people love them;

but it’s often through the details that I get to see the beauty of Jesus’ church working together. For instance, did you know it takes over 50 volunteers arriving as early as 7:45 am on Sundays to move and setup over 30 carts of equipment? Did you know that almost a half mile of cable gets unrolled and rolled up every week? Did you know that the connect team responded to over 350 connect cards turned in this year? All of these may seem insignificant as just statistics, but each represents people being served in some capacity. Every detail plays a supporting role in enabling others to worship our great God and King. What follows in this report is just a small sliver of the “details”. I wish we could capture every answered prayer, every soul won, every sin confessed, and every life changed, but only God knows all the details. My prayer is that the details here would lead you to reflect on Jesus’ goodness

and faithfulness to us over the last year. Although we have many challenges ahead of us as we continue to grow – space being one of them – we know that Jesus has gone before us, and will continue to take care of us, no matter what. Please continue to pray that Jesus would give your pastors, deacons, and other leaders the wisdom, humility, and grace to worship Him with all of our lives, and to serve others as we’ve been radically served by Him. It’s been a joy to serve as one of your pastors this past year, and I look forward to what He has in store for us this year as we trust Him together. For the King, DAVI D PARKER EX ECUTIV E PAS TOR

WE ARE DOWNTOWN CORNERSTONE CHURCH .

“I always knew the church was more than a place to park yourself on Sundays... but I now see it as the central part of God’s plan for a community working together, centered around Him and the gospel.” S H A R ON G. 8

Who we are

We exist to build a great city through the gospel of Jesus Christ for the glory of God by: ■ Nurturing disciple-making disciples who engage their context for Jesus ■ Multiplying gospel-centered communities scattered throughout the city ■ Engaging culture by integrating faith at work and within the arts ■ Sacrificially serving as we’ve been sacrificially served by God, in Jesus ■ Planting churches to spread the gospel from the neighborhoods of Seattle to the nations of world

What we believe

We stand in the tradition of historical evangelical confessionalism, affirming the Apostles’, Nicene and Athanasian creeds. While our full doctrinal statement is available online, we do wish to make known our conviction on the following six theologically-driven values: ■ The authority, necessity and sufficiency of the Bible ■ Centrality of the gospel of Jesus to all of life ■ The sovereignty of God in saving sinners ■ The work of the Holy Spirit for life and ministry ■ The equality of men and women, with men as responsible servant leaders within the home and church ■ The local church as God’s primary mission strategy

What we want to be known for

Downtown Cornerstone will, by God’s grace, be known for: ■ Trusting and treasuring all that God is, and is for us, in Jesus Christ ■ Pursuing holiness and humility ■ Prayerfully seeking conversions through evangelism ■ Sacrificial service to, and engagement with, our city ■ Planting churches that plant churches 9

E VIDENCES OF GR ACE The final fruit of our labors is not entirely quantifiable. In many ways, the most important fruit is unmeasurable. Who can measure increased joy in the Lord, or Spirit-led perseverance amidst hardship, or the number of hearts re-captured by the love of God, or how many walked out of bondage to sin because of the prayers of others, or how many restructured their calendars and budgets to place God first, or how many saw obedience turn from duty to delight, or how many seeds of the gospel were sown throughout our city this year? God is at work among us in ways often unseen. Yet, in other ways, some movements of His grace are more easily measured. What follows is a brief snapshot of some of His quantifiable kindness towards us.

“We got plugged into this community and it didn’t feel fake or anything; it was like a family. It’s a supernatural thing how God takes care of us through His body.” MARCO R. 11

OUR VALUES Jesus

Church

He is fully God and fully man. He is the second member of the trinitarian godhead. All things were created by Him, for Him and through Him. He is the Alpha and Omega, the first and last, the beginning and end. He is the cornerstone of the church and reality itself.

Jesus’ church is a redeemed people, not a place, meeting or building. From beginning to end God’s aim is to glorify Himself through a people, His people, who he is calling out from all tribes, peoples and languages through Jesus’ gospel. We are a local expression of that.

Gospel

Mission

The gospel is the good news that Jesus came to live, die and rise again for the forgiveness of sin to bring redeemed sinners under God’s gracious reign. The gospel brings us home to God for life that is truly life – every day.

Our prayerful aim is to see as many people as possible, locally and globally, experience the sincleansing, shame-removing, life-changing, worldaltering offer of Jesus in the gospel.

City We love Seattle. We live, work, play and raise our families here. The city is a strategic center of spiritual, social and cultural influence. We are here to bring the gospel to bear in the every day, serving as a faithful presence in our favorite city.

Mercy We are committed to building a great city, not just a great church, through justice, mercy, creativity and partnership, sacrificially serving as we’ve been sacrificially served by Jesus.

Multiplication Do it all again...everywhere. 12

OUR FOCUS FOR 2014–2015 Growing godly pastors

Multiplying communities

who lead the church and equip others for ministry

into every major neighborhood in Seattle

Nurturing disciple-making disciples

Strengthening relationships with community service partners

through Sunday gatherings, membership, discipleship groups and intentional equipping

Maturing, individually and corporately, as gospel-carriers so that as many as possible hear of God’s grace, in Jesus

to better serve those among us who are most in need

Identifying a more permanent gathering space as a means of developing a faithful presence in the city center

13

COMMUNITIES Over the last three years, by God’s grace, we have been blessed and privileged to see eleven Cornerstone Communities get planted and take root throughout the Seattle area. These localized families are comprised of imperfect people redeemed and restored by Jesus who gather for fellowship, prayer, time in the Word, and living life on mission together. As newly appointed deacon over communities, I am grateful and excited for the opportunity to help shape and strengthen existing Cornerstone Communities and to help plant, cultivate, and care for new ones as we enter into this new season as a church. Developing leaders, streamlining processes for getting connected, and partnering with local service providers will be top priorities. We will also be thinking and praying through creative ways to ensure our communities are places for not yet believers to be heard, loved, and cared for. As we continue to grow and multiply communities, the commitment to the gospel, one another, and the neighborhoods we live in will remain our foundation. We know that being in community with others is often challenging and sacrificial, and so our prayer, by God’s grace, is that we would move past these reservations to really love and serve others as we have been so radically loved and served in Jesus! In Him, EDWARD SU MN ER DEACON OF COMMUNITIES 14

ARTS & MUSIC UPDATE DCC has been marked by a love for music and the arts from the beginning. We view the arts as an expression of the creativity and beauty of our God. We value the arts as a means of grace, enabling us to sing and worship as one voice and one gathered people. We envision the arts as a conduit for redemptively engaging our city with the transforming news of the gospel. Here are a few snapshots of the things Jesus has accomplished among us up to this point: ■ Our church ‘hymnal’ has grown to over 60 gospelsaturated, Christ-exalting, theologically-rich anthems of grace. ■ Our design team has created over 100 original compositions for events, sermons, print materials, and more. ■ Our musicians have led worship for over 180 consecutive Sundays and grown to 3 skilled, highlycollaborative bands.

■ Our production team has prepared and displayed over 16,000 slides and mixed, amplified, and uploaded over 1,200 individual audio feeds.

and producing original songs that will serve and encourage our local church as well as the church at large.

■ Our media team has produced over a dozen professionalgrade videos to highlight ways God is at work among us and in our city.

■ We need additional leaders at all levels. Pray for gifted, humble leaders and artists to join, invest, and be raised up over this next year across our ministry expressions.

As we look to the next year, we are expanding our plans and praying bigger, convinced that the power is with God. He brings people and artists. He inspires and leads. He takes our best efforts and worst failures and perfects them in Himself. As we look to the next year, we are asking God to do what only He can do. Here are three specific areas of focus for our ministry in the coming year:

We are still a small church, but with ever increasing opportunities and resources. Pray for wisdom, provision, focus, collaboration, clarity, humility, and creativity as we seek to lead the church in worship and leverage our gifts for kingdom purposes. We love getting to creatively engage the arts and lead you all in the worship of our King week after week.

■ We want to engage our city more broadly in the arts – design, music, fine arts, dance, media, etc. – and invite more musicians and artists into our community.

For the gospel in Seattle, RAN DY LU N DY DEACON OF AR TS AND FINANCES

■ We feel called to begin writing 15

CORNERSTONE KIDS UPDATE It is incredible to look back and see what God has done among the kids and volunteers in our ministry. We have seen Him provide for us so consistently, and it is apparent that this is His ministry for His glory. There is no way 50 kids behind an escalator in a movie theater mall would hear the gospel every Sunday without Him being as good, faithful, and gracious as He is. We get to provide these updates only because He is who He says He is, and He is doing amazing things in the lives of Cornerstone Kids. CURRICULUM

In the fall of 2012, we started teaching through the Bible using the Gospel Project curriculum with our 3 to 8-year-olds. It has been incredible to walk with the kids through the Old Testament. The connections we’ve seen the kids make about God pointing to Jesus in every story have been awesome. This September, we finally began talking about 16

Jesus’ life and ministry! We’re so excited to see the fruit of walking through His life, death, and resurrection over the next year. MINISTRY

■ Our ministry grew from serving 1 to 6-year-olds to serving children from 6 months to 8-years-old! ■ We added 3 new teachers and 18 new volunteers. This allowed us to divide the age groups into 3 classes: a 1 to 2-year-old class, 3 to 4-yearold class, and 5 to 8-year-olds. This allows volunteers to focus on proclaiming the gospel in ways that kids of all ages can better understand, apply, and relish in. ■ We grew from averaging 20 kids each Sunday in September 2013 to 53 kids each Sunday in September 2014. As we’ve grown, God has graciously provided new volunteers and regular volunteers sacrificially serving

more often to ensure the kids are loved well. P R AY E R S

We are so excited and prayerful about the next year in Cornerstone Kids and how God will graciously provide. Please join us in praying for: ■ An awesome permanent space where our kids can hear the gospel and play together. ■ More teachers and volunteers to lovingly declare the gospel. ■ Gospel fluency and focus for our ministry, that Jesus would increasingly be our volunteers ultimate hope and our kids would see that. ■ Finally, that Jesus would bring more families to know and trust Him! By His grace, PI ERCE AN D B O N N I E MARTI N DEACONS OF KIDS MINIS TR Y

MERC Y & JUSTICE PARTNERS We not only want be known for proclaiming the good news of Jesus in our city, we want to be good news too. Those who have been changed by the gospel inevitably bring about gospel change. Therefore, we are committed to building a great city, not just a great church, through justice, mercy, and partnership. God’s words to His people in exile, through the prophet Jeremiah, apply to us as well, “Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” J E R EMI AH 29:7

CHURCH PL ANTING We believe the local church is God’s primary mission strategy for spreading the gospel of Jesus from the neighborhoods of Seattle to the nations of the world. Therefore, our prayerful aim is see many gospelcentered, Jesus-loving, Bible-believing churches planted. To do that, we have a three-fold strategy. First, we give 10% of our giving to local and global church planting efforts. Second, we have created an in-house twoyear residency to identify, equip and train future planters and pastors. Third, as a church, we belong to Acts 29 for resource-sharing, training, networking and accountability. What follows on these pages are personal notes of thanks from a number of church planters we are currently supporting.

BUDGE T 2014–2015 While money makes for a horrible god, it is a great tool for advancing the gospel of God and the good of others. Consider all that we have accomplished together through our collective financial generosity this year. We have funded church planting locally and globally (pages 18-19). We sent our first international shortterm ministry team to Brazil, along with many resources to further church planting efforts there. We offered weekly hospitality to hundreds, allowing new friendships to be formed and new life to be found in Jesus (pages 10-11). We offered tangible help and mercy to many (page 17). We supported three full-time, and two part time staff members focused on leading, feeding, protecting and multiplying the flock (pages 22-23). We work hard before God to make every dollar count. Here’s an overview of how we do that.

Adam was born in Seattle and grew up in Olympia. While attending the University of Washington, Adam met Jesus, his wife Jen, and earned two Bachelor degrees. Adam and Jen have been married for over 12 years and love adventuring around downtown Seattle with their four children: Carter, Macy, Ella, and Owen. Adam is currently completing his Masters degree in Theological Studies through Reformed Theological Seminary. His passion is to see the Gospel take root in the city of Seattle, rebels made into disciples of Jesus, and churches planted throughout the world.

David and his wife of thirteen years, Michelle, moved to Seattle eight years ago with a desire to see people meet Jesus and help plant churches. They have a little girl, Eliana, and together they enjoy getting out to explore the sights and tastes of Seattle and nearby mountains. David oversees the operations and day to day administration of the church. He and Michelle also host and lead a Cornerstone Community in Belltown. David is passionate about making disciples, and wants to see Jesus made much of in Seattle.

Originally from the Northwest, Randy met his wife Charissa while studying business at The Master’s College in southern California. They returned to the Northwest upon graduating and were married several years later. Randy and Charissa have two boys, Aiden and Theo. They enjoy hiking around the Puget Sound area, drinking locally roasted coffee, and walking the waterfront. Randy provides primary leadership for worship, arts and finance and his desire is for every image-bearing worshipper in Seattle to encounter the radical love and grace of God in Jesus.

We are a newly forming church and, therefore, still in the process of raising-up local leadership to become selfgoverning. In the interim, we have created a team of local pastors to serve as our extended elder board. This team sets and approves salaries, reviews budgets, offers personal accountability and provides counsel on major decisions. We are in regular relationship with all of these men. 22

Raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Tiffany moved to Seattle in 2005 to care for her father and attend Seattle Bible College. While studying, Tiffany met Jesus and developed a passion for crosscultural missions. Following graduation she spent time in Mexico, Brazil, and Ecuador. Tiffany joined DCC in 2010 and is currently pursuing a Bachelors degree at UW in International Studies. Tiffany wants her life to testify to the beautiful, glorious person of Jesus, with the desire that everyone she meets would come to trust and treasure Him above all else.

Pierce and Bonnie met while studying at Pepperdine University in southern California and moved to Seattle in 2010. They are expecting their first child in February and are excited to share their favorite places in the Capitol Hill neighborhood with their little one. Since joining DCC, their lives have been profoundly changed by the gospel and seeing Jesus at work through the local church. They are passionate about telling kids about Jesus and their hope is that kids would know how glorious and good He is!

Born in England, Edward moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1983. Edward can often be found hand in hand with his young daughter, Brooke, exploring Pike Place Market or enjoying a bite at one of our city’s fantastic restaurants. Having grown up in the church, Edward's relationship with Jesus was significantly renewed in his early twenties. Since then, his life has increasingly become about bearing witness to Jesus’ profound grace. Edward serves DCC by overseeing communities and discipling community leads. He is passionate about seeing mission emerge out of relationships and community.
