2014

We started back in 1996 in the field just east of the Highlaner Inn on Hwy 1 North of the interstate, and we rasied a couple thousand bucks for the Children’s Miracle Network. The next year we stayed at the same location, but switched charities to the Variety Club of Iowa. Since that location was too remote, one of our initial hosts-Gary Fitzpatrick, hosted Brewfest the next couple years in his lot at the corner of Gilbert and Prentiss street. For 5 years from 1998 to 2002, we were behind Gary’s brewpub (now Orchard Green and Old Capital Brewworks), and we teamed up with a couple different charities: Variety Club (’98-2000), Iowa City Hospice (2001), and the Englert Civic Theater (2002), and we continued to make Brewfest even bigger. It got too big for the lot however, so in 2003, we moved to Coralville to partner up with Dale Paulson and Old Chicago, where we continued to grow the festival. However that was also the last year for the Englert as our charity, for in 2004 we partnered up with the American Heart Association, and we’ve been together ever since! Even with the horrible floods of 2008 gutting the building, we still managed to grow the festival to the point where we outgrew that space, so we moved back to the lot and alley behind Orchard Green (where the SODO Apartments are currently) for two years in 2009 & 10. In 2011, we moved to our new home here in the Northside, with the help of Tim Fischer, and Betsy and Nancy of the Downtown District, we’ve continued to add new things every year, while continuing to grow the festival. In our first year of the Northside Oktoberfest, we added the Soda Fest and other kid’s activities, and we’ve continued to expand the options for the young and the young at heart ever since! In 2012 we also added the Iowa Children’s Museum and our local elementary school—Horrace Mann, along with the AHA as our charities, and that year even with the coldest Brewfest ever, we managed to raise over $20,000! Last year was a little soggy to say the least, but you showed that a little rain couldn’t dampen the spirits when the suds were flowing, and we still managed to raise over $22,000!!! This year is the biggest footprint that we’ve ever had for Oktoberfest, but we wouldn’t be able to do it without our friends from the American Heart Association, the Iowa Children’s Museum, the Old Capital Roller Girls and Dance Marathon. We hope you enjoy the 19th Annual Iowa City Brewfest and Northside Oktoberfest, and we hope you realize that thru all of our efforts, big and small, we all are making a difference here in the Northside and well beyond! The Bierguy, Doug Alberhasky

19 years. Wow, we’ve been doing this for 19 years! 19 years of beer, 19 years of fun, 19 years of providing almost $200,000 worth of donations to local charities. While most folks won’t really care about where the money goes, we do, and we thank you, the loyal beer drinkers of Iowa!

DON’T drop your glass. You are given ONE free drinking glass when you enter the event. If you break it, you buy it (a new glass that is).

The first six-pack of beer was produced by the Pabst Brewery in the 1940s. The brewery conducted numerous studies which found six cans were the ideal weight for the average housewife to carry home from the store.

DON’T smoke. Under no circumstances is smoking permitted in the Oktoberfest area. If you must smoke, mosey over to the designated areas. DON’T take any alcohol outside of the fenced in area. You don’t want to find out what happens when you do.
