Why I ALWAYS Vote
G
rowing up I was definitely a daddy‟s girl. My mother often tells the story of seeing my father and me walking down the street. He‟d have a hat on my head and I‟d be just skipping and laughing with my daddy. My mother would beg him to wait until she got home and could do my hair before he took me out. Though I don‟t remember skipping down the street with my father, I do have many fond memories of him. I remember he told me that happiness isn‟t getting what you want, but wanting what you got. I remember he loved crossword puzzles and he always, always watched everything political. Every State of the Union Address, every speech or debate, local or national Politics and Sports he was all in. Being a daddy‟s girl I was all in also, the sports I enjoyed, politics on the other hand was beyond boring. One night in the middle of a boring Presidential speech I remember asking him “why do you watch this stuff? He told me because this determines your whole life. Though I was too young to understand then I totally understand now. The first time I voted I was 19 I lost my father at the age of 22. Moving forward I find myself watching every speech and debate. I always vote in every election whether it‟s for Mayor, Governor, or President.

BLACK VOTERS
If the good Black citizens of Philadelphia, Detroit, and Milwaukee had not sat the 2016 presidential election out, Donald John Trump would not be the white supremacist in the White House. If those Black Americans had cast their votes, tens of thousands of Black and brown frontline workers would still be alive and well instead of victims of Trump‟s indifference to the deadliness of the coronavirus. If those Black voters had shown up at the voting polls or mailed in their ballots, closet-segregationist Jeffrey Beauregard Sessions would never have been the U.S. attorney general and never empowered to weaponize the office against civil rights, setting back hard-fought voting rights gains for a generation. All along, this was the plan. The Black voter was the target. Installing Trump in the White House was the goal. The plot worked out all too well so they are at it again. But this time, we should know better and by consciously embracing early and mail-in voting, do better. They were, and are, designed to suppress Black votes from Pennsylvania to Ohio to Michigan to Wisconsin to Texas to Georgia to Florida and to any other state where Republicans control the legislature. Through social media, out of his Kremlin-based troll factory, Putin launched a disinformation barrage to discourage Blacks from voting for Hillary Clinton or to waste their votes four years ago on the fat-chance candidate, Jill Stein, or, this time around, the WTF-candidate Kanye West. An estimated 1.4 million Black voters in the so-called “Blue Wall” states-Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin-who had shown up for President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, went AWOL

in 2016. Although Trump lost the nationwide popular vote to Clinton by 2.7 million, he won the Electoral College vote by a combined 77,000 in those three states. No doubt some of the absentee Black votes are Hillary‟s fault because she took them for granted and failed to give them some love. But there were insidious and manifest reasons contributing to Blacks just not being there for her: good ol‟ fashioned red, white and blue American voter suppression. Back before the 1965 Voting Rights Act became law, disenfranchising the Black vote, particularly in the South, was a cherished and predictable practice. Blacks were fettered from exercising their rights as American citizens by poll taxes, literacy tests, intimidation, and physical violence. There were some abPg4 MAE MAGAZINE | October 2020
surd challenges like calling on an aspiring Black voter to accurately guess the number of jelly beans in a good-sized glass jar before being allowed to vote. The Voting Rights law stifled many of those blatant acts of voter suppression, but then came the Supreme Court ruling seven years ago that welcomed Jim Crow back into the polling booths. In a 5 -4 decision, the conservative justices on the court gutted the 1965 Voting Rights Act by decreeing that a formula that required states and localities with a history of proven discrimination against Black voters get approval from the federal government before putting any new voting laws into effect. Although a few states already had voter ID laws, after the rightwing Supremes changed the rules, it didn‟t take long before forcing Blacks to prove they had the right to
BLACK VOTERS vote became all the rage--as did other new, improved method of suppressing the Black vote. Besides strict voter ID laws, the Black vote is now being depressed by cutting early voting, consolidating polling places, and purging voter rolls. And, of course, there are the Russian and Fox News propaganda operations. Four years ago, while white voter turnout increased, seven million fewer Blacks went to the polls as compared to 2012 when President Obama was on the ballot and there was no Russian interference for presidential candidate Trump. Thousands of accounts on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter created by the Russian government‟s Internet Research Agency targeted Black voters, discoursing us to not support Hillary or, better yet, to not vote at all. A 2016 report from the U.S. Senate‟s Select Committee on Intelligence cited posts specifically targeting Blacks with the titles “Our Votes Don‟t Matter,” “Don‟t Vote for Hillary Clinton,” and “A Vote for Jill Stein is Not a Wasted Vote.” The report also said that Russian operatives had created the Black Matters Facebook page to promote greater division between Black and white Americans. Nearly 100 percent of Russia‟s Internet Research Agency‟s YouTube content presented videos of Black men being violently attacked, the report said. Another Facebook wall, “Blacktivist,” also created by the Russians, got 11.2 million comments, shares, and reactions. All this began going down not long after Trump publicly asked Russia to give him a hand in defeating Hillary and during the time he asked us to vote for him because “what do you have to lose?” As fate would have it, it turned out to be the loss of our jobs, our health, and our lives. From Day One to Month six, Trump‟s magical thinking and lack of leadership on handling the corona virus has left us with more than 203,000 Americans dead, nearly seven million confirmed cases, and Depression-era unemployment. Since Blacks are not equally privileged to have jobs that allow them to work from home safely distanced from exposure to COVID-19, we are disproportionately making trips to the hospitals and morgues.
And because Black lives don‟t matter to Trump, our plight remains “it is what it is.” In Trump‟s world, that “what it is” is not good for us. Last week‟s untimely death of Justice Ruth Baden Ginsburg is bound to make it worse. Trump and his Senate Republicans are poised to seat another rightwing activist justice, taking us from the “Brown Vs. Board of Education” SCOTUS of the midcentury to the “separate but equal” doctrine ruling of the “Plessy Vs. Ferguson” SCOTUS of the end of the 19th Century. So when anyone tells you that elections have consequences, believe them. We know what happened four years ago. We know that Trump and his allies are hell-bent on stealing the November election so that he can become a full-blown authoritarian. This is our one chance to bring an end to an error. Sitting this one out is not an option. Vote early. Make sure that your family and friends do, too. We need to not only dump Trump, but we also need to win by such a landslide that Trumpism will go down with him. This time, we have got to vote like our lives depend on it-because they do. KAMALA HARRIS: Black Hope heads for the White House
K
amala Harris is giving America the chance to have the first AfricanAmerican woman and the first South Asian-American to serve as the Vice President of the United States – a heartbeat away from the Presidency. At a time when Black Americans are living in the most racist atmosphere this country has been in since Woodrow Wilson was President, having the prospect of this justice crusader as second in charge of the nation would be our unbelievable good fortune. They say the apple doesn‟t fall far from the tree, and even in respect to their respective paternal parents, Kamala stands in sharp contrast to Donald Trump. Fred Trump, Donald‟s father, was a leader in the KKK, a very blatant racist who bought and destroyed New York‟s Coney Island, who evicted every single Black person from the surrounding homes in Coney Island after his purchase, and whose son Donald followed in his father‟s racist footsteps by having to have been sued twice by the Department of Housing and Urban Development for not allowing Black families in his housing development. Contrast that to Donald Jasper Harris, a Jamaican-American economist and professor emeritus at Stanford University, known for applying Post-Keynesian ideas to development economics. In case you don‟t know what Keynesian ideas are, those were the kind of ideas Franklin Delano Roosevelt employed when he formulated The New Deal – things like unemployment compensa-
BY EMMA YOUNG tion, Social Security, Medicare and FDIC. His research and publications centered on proving that economic inequality and uneven development are inevitable properties of economic growth in a market economy. At the University of California, Berkeley Harris spoke at a meeting of the Afro American Association, a student‟s group at Berkeley whose members would go on to establish the discipline of Black studies, propose the holiday of Kwanzaa and help form the Black Panther Party. Both of Donald Harris‟ daughters have followed in their daddy‟s footsteps, fighting injustices. Kamala‟s younger sister, Maya is an attorney and outspoken lecturer on injustice and inequality in America. Kamala earned her undergraduate degree from Howard University, where she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha, the oldest African American Greek-letter sorority. In 2003, she became the District Attorney of the City and County of San Francisco. Among her achievements as District Attorney, Harris started a program that gives first-time drug offenders the chance to earn a high school diploma and find employment as an alternative to incarceration. Now, pause here, because some of you may be thinking “But I thought Kamala put hundreds of Black men in prison for drugs.” Well, that‟s what the propaganda says – but think about it. District Attorneys, especially District Attorneys in a state as large as California, have dozens of prosecutors working under them. These prosecutors receive their cases via the police. In other words, a policeman arrests someone perhaps on suspicion of dealing drugs. The prosecuPg8 MAE MAGAZINE | October 2020
tor has only the policeman‟s word that the facts presented are true and he or she takes those facts before a grand jury to secure an indictment. Then the prosecutor (aka Assistant District Attorney) either reaches a deal with the suspect, or tries the case as the attorney for the state. The District Attorney is responsible for hiring, firing and overseeing the actions of the Assistant District Attorney. The D.A. will review the Assistant D.A.‟s paperwork to insure they are handling the case properly, generally giving the Assistant D.A. the benefit of the doubt and taking the Assistant D.A. at his word that the information they present is truthful, just as the Assistant D.A. takes the arresting officer at his or her word. The D.A.‟s office cannot prosecute federal crimes and since a great percentage of drug-related crimes are federal, and others are first-time offenders, I doubt that it is accurate that Kamala Harris put a bunch of innocent men in prison. Surely she wasn‟t the arresting officer, nor the prosecutor or Assistant D.A. After completing two terms as the District Attorney of San Francisco, Kamala was elected as the first African American and first woman to serve as California‟s Attorney General. Two points here. First, California residents must have been pleased with her performance as D.A. to elect her to A.G. Secondly, in the position of Attorney General, Kamala was even further removed from the day-to-day activities related to putting innocent men in prison. In fact, the Attorney General deals more with protecting citizens from the corruption of corporations. For instance, during her nearly two terms in
KAMALA HARRIS office, Kamala won a $25 billion settlement for California homeowners hit by the foreclosure crisis. She also defended California‟s landmark climate change law (while Trump is still preaching that climate change is a hoax), she protected the Affordable Care Act (which Trump is trying to overturn) and she helped win marriage equality for all Californians and prosecuted transnational gangs that trafficked in guns, drugs and human beings. Then she was elected Senator, and continued fighting injustice. She introduced and cosponsored legislation to raise wages for working people, to reform our broken criminal justice system, to make healthcare a right for all Americans, to address the epidemic of substance abuse, support veterans and military families and expand access to childcare for working parents. There are now nineteen Democratic Senators who have signed on as co-sponsors to SB 1083, the Reparations Bill. Kamala was the first to sign (I‟m sure her father would be proud). Imagine, the first Vice Presidential candidate who is co-sponsor of a Reparations bill. That is huge. To those who are upset with Kamala not being ADOS (American Descendants of Slaves), Pence isn‟t ADOS either, nor were the 44 Vice Presidents before him – and he‟s not fighting against injustices, he‟s working for them.

Personification of HATE: The Jacob Blake Incident

JACOB BLAKE STORY BY LOUISE EBERHART

hen Dylan Roof shot and killed nine members of Mother Emmanuel‟s church, after he had spent time with them in their Bible class, he was peacefully arrested. In fact, the cops took him to Burger King before taking him to the station. When Kyle Rittenhouse shot and killed two Black Lives Matters protesters and shot and maimed a third, he walked by the police, still armed with his AR15. They say they didn‟t know he had done anything. Armed with his AR15 he didn‟t look suspicious? No, he looked young and white. When 29 year-old Jacob Blake turned his back on the cops to go to the car where his three sons, ages 8, 5 and 3 were sitting there alone, scared, not knowing what was happening to their father, he was shot in the back, at point-blank range, seven times. Were they trying to kill him? If so, they didn‟t succeed. They only paralyzed him, and damaged his organs so that he had to have most of his small intestines and half of his colon removed. They didn‟t kill him, but they killed any hopes he may have had of living a full and healthy life. Jacob Blake was paralyzed and handcuffed to a hospital bed. What was his crime? Critics said he should have obeyed the police when he was told to stop. Is disobeying the police a crime that comes with the death penalty? Are cops licensed to mete out the death penalty, with no trial, no judgment, no defense? Jacob Blake comes from a family of civil rights fighters. His father addressed a gathering at the Lincoln Memorial on the 57th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King‟s address at that same site. Jacob Blake, Sr. told the audience, “There are two systems of justice. There‟s the white system of justice and the Black system of justice and we‟re not going to take it anymore!” The hatred is so deeply ingrained in the fabric of America that the President of the United States couldn‟t even bring himself to show the compassion to visit Blake or his family. Instead he claimed that he had spoken to the family‟s pastor, and they had a “very good conversation.” The problem with that is, as the Blake family explains, they have no family pastor. The hatred is so deep that right-wing advocates and Trump supporters are making up all kinds of lies about Jacob Blake‟s background. They have even gone as far as to accuse him of having raped a child. That claim was debunked by Snopes. Meanwhile, these same haters, including a group of evangelical Christians have raised over $200,000 for the defense of Kyle Rittenhouse, who will be defended by the attorney of Rudy Guiliani, President Trump‟s personal attorney. So there you have it folks, hate comes full circle.
Were they trying to kill him? If so, they didn’t...

Story by Louise Eberhart Now, we are facing perhaps the most critical election of our lifetime, and our choice is between two racist white men. At any other time I might say, toss a coin, sit it out or vote Green Party. But not this time. Not when the future of this country and most importantly, the future of my people is on the line. I don‟t know what type of household either of them grew up in, or who their early influencers were. All I know is that Donald Trump‟s father, Fred Trump was one of three Klansmen arrested in 1927. One of them has a little more insight into the truth about what is going on in America than the other. Donald Trump says systemic racism doesn‟t exist in this “beautiful America.” Well, if it doesn‟t exist in his little mind, chances are he‟s not going to try to make it better. I mean it‟s like adding more sugar to your non-existent cake to make it taste better. You wouldn‟t put forth the effort. Neither will Trump. On the other hand, Joe Biden recognizes America‟s injustices and has vowed to do something about it. In the Town Hall the other day, he even apologized again for the 1994 Crime Bill which he co-authored, and promised to end mandatory minimums, abolish pri-
vate prisons and end the awful crack-cocaine disparity. People do evolve, given the right circumstances and an environment conducive to a self-evolution. Donald Trump spent eight years, from 2008 – 2016, bemoaning the fact that a Black man had the audacity to be the President of his America. He spent eight years questioning Barack Obama‟s birthplace and trying to convince America that President Obama wasn‟t qualified to be in the office to which the majority of America had elected him. He probably spent a lot of time with his like-minded friends hating that Black man and most Black people; in other words becoming more racist. Meanwhile, being in the White House with the nation‟s first Black President, probably didn‟t earn Biden a Black card, but he was certainly in a position to learn things about Black people that he wasn‟t taught during his early upbringing. He had a ringside seat to observe the many death threats that President Obama received – more than any President in history, and he probably got a chance to see what racism really looks like and how utterly illogical and stupid it is to hate someone to the point of wanting to kill them because of the color of their skin. Living with someone for 8 years, their friends become your friends and their enemies your enemies. I‟ve heard Biden say stupid things like “you ain‟t Black if you don‟t vote for me.” He said that recently. So he‟s not out of the woods. He may not have even progressed to a recovering racist yet, but I think he‟s trying. Donald‟s not even trying. What kind of mindset does one have to call Black lives matter a message of hate? Yep, he said that, for real.

NOW THAT’S FLY!
Now That’s Fly! By FRANK “What did you do?!? Can you walk, Aunt Shaun?!” “No.” That was the initial conversation. Between my niece, Aeryn, and I after she found out that I broke my ankle a couple of weeks ago. “Well…what did you DO?!?!” Now, I KNOW that she knew what I did, already, because she is EARS TO THE GROUND in my sister‟s house, but I indulged her. “I was on my skates.” She responded in feigned surprise, “On your skates?!” Again, I KNEW SHE KNEW…”Yes…”. “Hmmm…”…THAT”S HER GRANDMOTHER IN HER…HAHAHAHA!!!! Anyway…Yes, I broke my ankle…on my skates…while practicing walking. In the words of Allen Iverson, “we‟re talking about PRACTICE!” But, for me, the important part was the walking. Anyone who knows me, knows that one‟s walk draws my attention. When I was growing up, for some reason, bow-legged men were THE THING. Every adult woman I knew LOVED a bow-legged man. Something about how they walked worked for them. I admit, I drank the Kool-Aid for a while. My friend‟s and I had a club where we watched older boy‟s in our complex that we had crushes on. We called it the “Private Eye” club. Our theme song was “Private Eyes” by Hall & Oates. As for the bow-legged thing, the object of my desire was an older boy in our building named Aaron. He was 19, light-skinned (the onset of their heyday, I guess), sweet-as-pie (I think he knew I liked him), and bow-legged. I enjoyed watching him…come and go… Our group would meet weekly. We would open each meeting with our theme song, then report on the comings and goings of our crushes. That was it…That was the end game…What were our crushes doing? For me? What was my
bow-legged crush doing? My report never changed. Each week, he was just living his life, one bow-legged step at a time. That walk…That…bow-legged walk… I‟m what some older folks would call, slew-footed. Not drastically, but, when I walk, my feet are slightly angled out, obtuse for my Math folks. When I was married to my first wife, I would intentionally walk with my feet straight ahead, but, for me, it looked like I was bowlegged. It was our inside joke. In retrospect, it may not be as funny as we thought, but it does bring us…or, ME, back to…the walk… MAE MAGAZINE | October 2020 Pg19
Walks are a point of focus for me. I‟m not sure why, but it is what it is. I pay attention to how people walk. Does the walk match the person? The attitude? The position? I can recognize folks by their walk. I know this doesn‟t make me special, but, again, it is what it is. Have you ever thought about how many songs there are about walking? Me, neither. BUT, as I think abut it now, there are some good ones. Among my faves (And, in MY VERY PARTICULAR ORDER): “A Long Walk”…Jill Scott
NOW THAT’S FLY!
“Walk This Way”…Run DMC w/Aerosmith “Walk Like An Egyptian”…The Bangles “Walk it Out”…Ink “Walk of Life”…Dire Straights
ABSOLUTELY LOVE these songs!!!! If you‟re a friend, chances are I‟ve had my “Best Walk” conversation with you. If not, well, here we are..I LOVE a good walk…And, as with everything else, I have a list. Here we go (in reverse order of preference): John Travolta in “Saturday Night Fever” Denzel Washington…In EVERYTHING… Bill Pulman…Walking across the desert at the end of “Independence Day” Will Smith…Walking across the desert at the end of “Independence Day” Jeff Goldblum…across the desert at the end of “Independence Day.” Honorable Mention: Annilise Keating…Not sure if this is Viola Davis‟ real walk or the character‟s, but it‟s not on this list because it‟s a good walk. It‟s here because it‟s…noticeably odd…That‟s a HARD walk! So…Clearly , there‟s an “Independence Day” pattern, but of all…Jeff Goldblum and that walk across that desert… HONEEEYYYYYY!!!! “Dem hips swayin‟ and sashayin‟ with them long legs… But, it‟s not that role that I‟m thinking of now. Nor, is it his role in “Jurassic Park” where he‟s the dad of that BEAUTIFUL, BLACK GIRL. It‟s, actually, his most well-known role that pervades my thoughts now…Jeff Goldblum in and as “The Fly.” And, you know why! But, what does that mean now…the fly? The fly…the infamous fly…the fly that had the AUDACITY to land on Mike Pence‟s head, during the Vice Presidential debate last week. That fly won the debate...HANDS DOWN… Not surprising, given that both Senator Harris and Vice President Pence were both given one task…Do No Harm…to their respective candidate‟s stance…They both succeeded at that, unsurprisingly. In full transparency,I don‟t understand the “undecided” voter. At this point, if you don‟t know who you‟re voting for, then you haven‟t been paying attention, or haven‟t had to. But, if that‟s you, let me give you a run-down of the VP debate… which was conducted with way more maturity than the Presidential debate…even if not more honesty… By now, you‟ve either seen it, heard about it, discussed, or some combination of the three. As a viewpoint, Pence was not as overwhelmingly aggressive as #45, but he was just as, if not more, condescending and verbose. He appeared overly arrogant in his speech and snide in his responses to Senator Harris. Although, much commentary was focused on him overtalking Senator Harris, I didn‟t feel that he did that as much as
discussed. However, I did feel that he over-talked the moderator…OFTEN…Public sentiment is in accordance with that position… Chris Wallace turned in a less-than-stellar or journalistic moderator performance during the first Presidential debate. He was torched upon review. I‟m not sure who Susan Page is or why she was tapped to moderate the VP debate, but I do know that the expectation was for a more cordial and ruleabiding affair. Expectations are cute… Upon first view, I, like many other women, Black women, in particular, felt that Senator Harris won the debate, emphasizing her team‟s points and doing less harm to Biden‟s campaign. Upon re-watching and analysis, my stance has not changed. Now, I won‟t pretend that she answered every question posed, in the manner asked, but she did, in my opinion, maintain the most close relationship to facts, while embodying every sentiment women, especially women of color, in particular Black women, have had to synthesize and respond to when dealing with men, ESPECIALLY WHITE MEN…in ANY setting. And, THIS was a VP debate. But, I must admit that I am NOT undecided. I am voting Harris/Biden. So, I wasn‟t watching for information. I was watching for watching‟s sake…to see if she would molly-whop him as I had hoped from the beginning…To see how they performed… Pence was rehearsed, measured, stoic, and, in my opinion, disingenuous. Apparently, folks in Biden‟s camp view him as a “smooth operator.” I‟m not sure who is judging, but I feel comfortable in saying that Sade would be ashamed of that connection to her lyrics. “No need to ask…”. What‟s most interesting about this is the resulting reports of suburban wives finding him attractive and #45 making public pleas to suburban wives to like him…HAHAHAHA!!!! Back to the debate… Harris was, overall, honest and genuine, even if too rehearsed and measured. She, as should have been expected, garnered the requisite amount of meme moments. Of course, we know, “I‟m speaking”, but it‟s the multitude of Black woman faces that she gave that seems to be living in folks‟ head…RENT FREE… To be clear, there were, DEFINTELY, points Harris left on the floor… How is she both too hard on crime, as indicated by her practice in CA vs. being the most progressive member of the Senate? How can you (Pence) say that your administration will continue to follow the Science, when #45 continues to say that he knows more than Science? He had JUST said that in a climate meeting with Gavin Newsome and others. Started the “personal facts” argument, but didn‟t follow through.

NOW THAT’S FLY! Senator Harris, did, however, have some masterful points. They were: “I keep hearing about Infra-structure Week, but it never happened.” I don‟t remember it happening, either. “When you say in debt, that mean you owe money to somebody. It would be really good to know who the President of the United States, the Commander-InChief owes money to.” “I get regular receipts (MAJOR SIDE-EYE to the VP) of classified information about threats to our nation and hot spots around the world.” Look, I know that Kamala (COMMA-La) is riding the coattails of Black women that came before her, but that, in my opinion, makes her efforts that much more impactful. She watched, learned, desired, and acted. Now, she‟s setting the stage for current generations and those to come to do the same. Women and girls, of every color, around the world, are rooting for her. To be clear, again, she hasn‟t always made the right choices, but who among us or our elected officials has? Why should we hold her to a higher level of scrutiny. Some will and do because she‟s a woman…Some go further because she‟s a Black
woman. We got her, though…At least, I got her… That fly had her, too. Fam, stayed on Pence‟s head long enough to push Pence into third place in a two-person debate. That fly got memes, Tik Toks, and an agent! Can‟t lie… Thought that bama‟ was a piece of ceiling when I first looked up. I know better, now…THE WORLD KNOWS BETTER, NOW!!!! The world knows the fly…and his power…Which brings us back to Jeff Goldblum…”The Fly”…And, that walk… Kamala talks the talk. Kamala‟s walk? Well, it‟s been the focus of media for quite some time now, as we‟ve recently been drawn to her patronage of Chuck Taylor‟s and Timberlands, as she de-boards flights in different cities. There‟s also the multitude of shots of her doing what she does on the regular in her high-heels. Right-leaning “journalists” would have you believe that she is mimicking #45‟s wife, but #MAILORDERBRIDE WOULDANDCOULD NEVER!!!! Universe aligned…Kamala Harris will be walking the walk come January 2021… In the words of my man TC from “Car Wash”, ”BUZZZZ!!!!”

CHADWICK BOSEMAN
CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOREVER!
I
BY EMMA YOUNG
t seems as though life has been particularly hard on Black folks lately. Especially in the last four years – but even in the last 40 years, and yes, the last 400 years. It‟s like Langston Hughes said, “Life for me ain‟t been no crystal staircase.” But once in awhile, a little bit of sunshine peeps out from behind the ominous clouds. Once in awhile, a hero emerges to remind us of the strength, the courage, and the faith that lives within our race. And when times are particularly hard, as they have been in the last four years, a superhero emerges, to help us through these dark days. Chadwick Boseman was that superhero. Through his immense talent, he brought baseball legend Jackie Robinson back to life in a movie called “42.” Through Jackie‟s story, Chadwick reminded us that even though boundaries have been erected all around us, we can break through. Chadwick Boseman, our superhero, brought Thurgood Marshall to life to remind us that even though laws have been established to keep us down, and even though laws have been broken to break us, there is still the tenacity within us to challenge those laws and even to make them work for us. Chadwick Boseman brought to life the late, great James
Brown, to remind us that they can‟t take away our talent, our creativity, our special way of bringing joy to the world. Reminding us that in spite of all they‟ve tried to do to keep us down, we have within us a special spirit that allows us to “Get on Up” and keep getting up. To say it loud, “We‟re Black & We‟re Proud.” Then when we needed a very special superhero, a unique superhero, Chadwick brought to us King T‟Challa – to remind us of our royalty, our greatness, our innovativeness, ingenuity and humanity. Chadwick didn‟t just play the role of that superhero, he embodied that superhero, he was that superhero and what made King T‟Challa seem so real was that he was so real. Chadwick through King T‟Challa brought us Wakanda. Wakanda is not a place, it‟s a spirit of love and unity that continues to sustain us in the midst of racism and hatred. On August 28, 2020, Chadwick Boseman left us, but he didn‟t leave us without a legacy. He didn‟t leave us without the inspiration to tap into that superhero spirit that resides in all of us. When we say Wakanda Forever, we‟re talking about that eternal spirit; that village that we all occupy as we come together in solidarity; a spirit that continues to live even in the face of death. Wakanda forever!

THE ROAD FROM HUSH TO CANDOR: A Doctor Looks Back At 30 Years of Diagnosing Colon Cancer Claudia Johnson, MD
P
rior to the last 30 years or so, people were not openly talking about cancer. Grandmothers were older then and particularly a lot more secretive than in our present times. Many Novembers ago, my grandmother became fatally ill with some disease, referred to by my mother whenever I would ask as “They don‟t know”. Then, eavesdropping as children are prone to do, I overheard my mother slip out the word cancer. Just days before Christmas, my grandmother died. Early on I learned that cancer was painful, deadly, and sometimes a rapid reaper of life. I knew it could not be my grandmother‟s fault, so why the secret? Years later I learned that she had what we now know as colon cancer. Today we have all grown and learned and become more aware, not just of colon cancer, but of the evolving methods of diagnosis and prevention. Now we can be private about our illness but not shut off when it comes to methods of diagnosis and the need to be ever vigilant against this largely preventable and curable cancer with early detection methods Chadwick Bosworth was not quieted by society, in our tell-all show-all world, he chose to be bravely silent and seek treatment while continuing to give the world his talents without ever missing a beat. When he died, he left not only a gift in film but also a legacy of awareness. We are no longer oblivious to the fact that youth does not guarantee protection from colon cancer. For the past decade or so, physicians treating black patients noticed before any statistical studies that people were getting
colon cancer at younger ages and that it is often fatal in the earlier years. One factor could be that in youth no one expects to be seriously ill and even when they seek medical help some physicians assume that the younger patients‟ problems are minor. Pain is attributed to gas or nerves or poor diet. Bleeding is blamed on hemorrhoids. But it simply cannot be done without considering the slight chance that it could be a serious matter. During practice as a gastroenterologist I can never forget the 22-year old woman that was told she had gas, recommended to take an antacid, and return to the gynecologist for an ultrasound that was of course normal. She never thought of anything fatal nor did the physician. By the time she was referred to my office, I convinced her to get a colonoscopy. Unfortunately, she was soon diagnosed with late stage colon cancer. She died within a year. She had no relatives with cancer. Rare , yes. But is it happening more frequently? Yes. Do we know why? No. It is always rougher on the family and on the world when a young life is lost. Here are some colon health awareMAE MAGAZINE | October 2020 Pg25
ness tips for all. If you are black or brown, start taking care of your colon early. Have a healthy diet, exercise, water – all the things that seem to work for all the other health issues. Colonoscopy has been the gold standard of diagnosis and sometimes treatment for years. But if you cannot get a colonoscopy you should at least try to get one of the other methods of testing. For one, there is the FIT test that detects blood in the stools. The FIT is performed on a small sample of stool that is put in a special container given to the patient to take home. FIT requires only one stool sample. There are no dietary or medication restrictions required. Another test is a combination of the FIT test for blood in the stools and a DNA test for tumors, both benign and malignant. This combination test is called Cologuard in the United States For minorities, actual colonoscopy should be done as early as the age of 40. If you have risk factors such as family history or colitis, you will want to check with a physician for the particulars. So, there are more methods to screen and less excuses not to. Remember when you see your gastroenterologist nothing is too unimportant or too embarrassing. We even appreciate photos of your stools to help with diagnosis. During my earlier years of practice one patient ate too quickly and had a pain in the rectum that turned out to be a fishbone. See your friendly neighborhood gastroenterologist (wink) for a detailed chat.

STAYING POSITIVE IN THE PANDEMIC

his is the optimum time to get centered and focused on self-care during this global „new normal‟. We must remember WE are not the only humans adjusting to change in the pandemic. Across the globe communities are discovering new ways to safely interact, stay physically fit and emotionally stable. Americans, black citizens, queer folks, now is the time to cover each other in positive energy, good thoughts, and acts of kindness. We cannot hide our heads in the sand waiting for this to pass over. It has proven to be a perplexing enemy of our society and desired way of life. With or without the forthcoming „vaccine‟ we must take charge of the only thing we control. Our energy. "Meditation is the single most powerful tool to aid recovery from disease and lead to a life of maximum health" - Ian Gawler
Many are troubled daily, thinking about the present health emergency and how to best protect themselves and their loved ones. Let me suggest a tried and true alternative to worry. MEDITATION. Meditation benefits are unending with regular and consistent practice. The benefits are both physical and psychological. In addition to the positive impact on your optimum health, it reduces your stress and anxiety and helps to cure depression and even helps in pain relief. Acknowledging that our minds and thoughts control our ability to receive and send positive energy not only to our body, but to others; meditation is the key to optimum health. Across this globe there are many forms of meditation practices in different faiths and systems. It would be beneficial for you to explore the myriad of guided meditations to relieve stress and chronic pain. Pg26 MAE MAGAZINE | October 2020
I am a fan of attention-based meditations. Also known as mindfulness meditations. It requires your full attention to your breath, body and feelings, or to the phenomena occurring around you. I encourage you to do your research and decide to do the work to become a more focused, positive, and stress-free human. We can and will survive this time of the pandemic and we will come out of this better, a better community, and a better world. Washington, DC, October 17, 2020 --(PR.com)-Today, Community Family Life Services officially launched a new women‟s reentry initiative. CFLS‟s goal is to equip women with the necessary tools to ensure she has a successful start.” “I am extremely excited to partner with Community Family Life Services in their „Starter Kit‟ Initiative,” said Shari L.
