t is impossible to live a life that is unaffected by other people. Their attitudes and opinions blow into our lives , shaping our perspectives and influencing our decisions. When a person demonstrates a positive lifestyle it sharpens another’s lifestyle. It yields a harvest of mature fruit over time. As with all things there is balance, so therefore a negative influence can sway a person’s better judgment as well. We all have “blind spots” meaning we can still be vulnerable to being influenced toward ungodly attitudes and actions. This process can be so subtle that it goes unnoticed at times. Bad company corrupts good character (1 Corinthians 15:33). Given this reality how do we recognize and respond to the people in our lives who may indeed be “bad company”? The first step is to identify the people whom the scripture warns us about (Wolves in Sheep’s clothing). Negative influence is not always obvious (2 Peter 3:17). In Hebrews 12:1 it states “Let us throw off everything that hinders and

the sin that so easily entangles. It is the nature of sin to Derek Miller, Editor & Michelle Miller entangle, to trip us up and/or to drag us down. When you are around those whose lives are enmeshed in sin, you are exposed to its entangling influence in at least three different ways: through the appeal of rebellion, through the desire for man’s approval, and through the inherent pleasure of sin. We all crave endorsements that we “believe” will validate our worthiness as a person. But when your desire to please the crowd overshadows your reverence for God, you have allowed man’s influence to overpower God’s to a degree. It’s fine to set standards and parameters with people in your lives. So ask yourself who is influencing you and who are you influencing???? ■

id you know that God created you with a purpose; an incredible plan for your life? He wants you to have fellowship with him. No matter what your story is, or how far you may feel you are from God, He’s never lost sight nor forgotten about you. With God, there’s strength for your life, forgiveness from your past, and hope for what’s ahead tomorrow. Because of sin mankind was separated from God. As a result, we need God’s saving grace to end our alienation from Him. Salvation comes only through God’s grace – not human effort – and must be received personally by repentance (renewing of our mind) and faith in what Jesus has done for us at the Cross. Only believers will enjoy eternal fellowship with God. Receiving Jesus as your Lord and Savior is done both within your heart and with your mouth. To receive him today, repeat these words and say" Lord Jesus, I come to you as I am. I believe that you are the Son of God. I thank you for dying and taking my sins to the cross. I turn from my ways and turn to you. I ask you now to come into my heart and save me." ■

Kingdom Deliverance Embracing Souls

Bebee Watson … God's leaping angel!

B

ebee Watson was called by God at a very young age and knew the Hand of God was on her life. Raised by her grandmother, in the Baptist church, she was one of seven daughters where her father walked out due to alcohol addiction and left her mother to provide. Being a nine year-old child, she would pray and ask God to come and rescue them out of the pit of misery. She began hearing the Voice of God and seeing visions at an early age and would always turn to her grandmother for an explanation. Her grandmother told her that she was a very special child and God’s Hand was on her life and He would show her His Will. With that, she would simply send her to bed and assured her that sooner or later, "you will know." The visions and dreams began coming to pass as God allowed her to see. She was preaching by the age of twelve to her sisters and family in a little old house on a hill, but not understanding the full purpose that God had for her life. Many years went by and even though her relationship with God never waxed cold, she became complacent. After completing school and starting her own family she took the backseat to what God was calling her to do, as her spirit was not satisfied. She asked God what was it that He wanted her to do and assured Him that whatever His Will was for her life, she would run for His Kingdom never looking back. Shortly after, she witnessed His Healing Power with her eight month old son whom died in her arms. On their drive to the hospital, being twenty minutes away, the tire blew out on the car. She immediately heard the Voice of God ask her, "DO YOU BELIEVE IN MY MIRACLES?" Her spirit knew she had no other choice but to trust God and come face to face with her faith. Her answer could be no other than a submissive, "Yes..." She then got out of the car, laid her baby across the hood, stretched forth her hands and began to pray for him. In just a short matter, he coughed and God restored her son back to life! Not knowing this was only the beginning of many more miraculous miracles to come! ■

Prosperity On Purpose

The New Health Care Law: What’s in it for us?

by Natalie Nicholson

ealthcare reform refers to the federal law called the Affordable Care Act which passed in 2010. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) gives millions of Americans access to quality health care, while keeping the cost of the insurance at a minimum, based on your income and household size. This new law has had many people talking about what it really means and what we should know about this controversial subject. There are many layers that comprise this new law. For this reason, the Afforable Care Act is vital to our communities as we are the very population who least can afford NOT to be covered. As an insurance consultant, I talk to many people every week about health insurance and the obstacles they encounter purchasing health coverage for themselves and their families. The Affordable Care Act otherwise known as, “Obamacare”, has been a GodSend. This is one of the most important pieces of legislation of our time. You need to know how it can help fill your insurance needs or those of people you may know and love. It is necessary to understand how it may help you so that you will take full advantage of the provisions it has for you and your families. Young adults are now able to stay on their parents’ insurance coverage until they are 26 years old, regardless if they are in school or married. There will be better prescription drug benefits for seniors. The Medicare prescription coverage gap or the “doughnut hole” will be eliminated by 2020. Preventive care, like immunizations, yearly physicals, blood tests and mammograms are free of charge. This measure gives greater access to doctors who can screen patients at an earlier stage in an effort to prevent deadly consequences of some treatable diseases. Affordable Care Act requires insurance companies to spend up to 80% of your premium payments on medical care and not administrative costs. If they do not, then the insurance carrier must offer you a rebate. Out of Pocket expenses will also be reduced for individuals and families earning less than 400% of the poverty level. This means that deductibles, copayments and coinsurance will have limits on them so that you will have greater access to services. The Out of Pocket cost limit for an individual policy for 2015 is $6600 for an individual and $13,200 for a family. This means that this dollar amount is the most you will have to pay in a given year out of your pocket before the insurance plan must cover all services at 100%. Health insurance tax credits are available for businesses with 25 or fewer employees. This credit will cover up to 50% of premium costs for employers. Enrollees in all health plans will have the right to receive out- of -network emergency services at in -network rates, direct access to women’s health providers and a choice of primary care physicians. All new plans must meet 10 essential benefit requirements that MUST include emergency care, ambulatory care (outpatient), hospitalization, mental health and substance abuse, lab tests, maternal and newborn care, prescription drugs, services and devices for injuries and rehabilitative services, preventive and wellness and chronic disease management (i.e., high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease), and pediatric service including dental and vision for children. These are some of the highlights of the Affordable Care Act. In the upcoming issues, I will go into greater detail concerning some of the terminology and benefits to help you better understand how your health insurance works and to make sure your benefits are working for you. was blessed to attend a national conference in the month of May and the Hip Hop preacher Eric Thomas was absolutely phenomenal. The big take away for all who attended was immersion. How immersed are you in whatever you are doing? I am going to give you a biblical reference as well that will help all of us move to a different level. Whatever you are doing for a living right now, ask yourself this question. Am I excited about my work every day? Does working my job, business or vocation give me energy or drain me? Am I giving 100 per cent effort as it relates to my job, business, or vocation? It's all about immersion. Col 3:17 " And whatever you do whether in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father". Wow, this is so profound. My man Eric Thomas put it this way, “execution is worship". Doing your work in a way that it brings Glory and honor to God is worship. So I will ask the question, what can you do? What can you do right at home that you can immerse yourself in it and bring God Glory because of your level of execution? My job right now is to encourage you to work from a place of passion. No more TGIF. Instead T.G.I.M! We spend at least a third of our lives working somewhere doing something. I say create the life you want by being immersed and working from a place of passion. Do it as unto the Lord! God bless, I love you all and let's keep the conversation going. ■

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

By Stephanie Reck vately about my heart's desires for him.

F

irst of all as a parent you are not alone. Hearing that your child is gay is not an easy thing. Do you just accept it because culture says, "You were born that way?" Do you compromise your beliefs as a Christian? First of all don't start quoting a bunch of scripture to your child. This will not help, even though it is truth. Be careful not to condemn them as a person. We all have sin in our lives, and sometimes the enemy has a greater hold on others. Spend time with your child without compromising your beliefs. Let your child know that you love them unconditionally, and that their lifestyle will not take away your love for them. Too many Christians are passing hate and condemnation over this lifestyle, but isn't sin, sin? Why categorize sin, God does not. Focus on your child's strengths and that God did create them for His plan and purpose. You don't always have to talk about their lifestyle. You can talk about things your child is doing in their lives. Encourage the good that you see in them. As a parent the MOST important thing that you can do is pray. That is not to be underestimated. Prayer is your best choice is dealing with your child in this lifestyle. You, as the parent become an intercessor for your child. Be willing to never give up, even when it looks like the situation will never change. Be the praying momma or daddy. My son knows I pray for him, and most of all he knows that I love him. He knows where I stand Biblically, but we no longer get into long discussions about his life choices. I simply bring these petitions to the throne of God. Sometimes, I have to be alone and cry and speak with God pri-

10

Just because the culture says it is okay to be gay, does not mean you have to accept that. It also does not mean that you can do the opposite and demean and condemn your child. They are worthy and valuable and God died for them too. Focus on what is right with your child. Pray for ministers and people of God to be able to speak truth into their lives. Never give up on your child, even in the darkest hours. Love is powerful and a force that the enemy cannot reckon with. Yes, it will be hard at times, but are we not called to love as Christ loves? We can still love without condoning and compromising. How else would unbelievers come to Christ unless we show them the Father's love? Parents, take heart, this is a tough journey. If you are married, make sure you take date nights with your spouse regularly. Spend regular time alone with God, pour out your heart to Him. Cry when you need to and express your concerns to God. Pray day and night for your child, never stop praying. Take time for yourself and do something just for you. This is a long and sometimes tiring journey, so make sure you are taking care of you. Don't focus solely on your child and their lifestyle, step away from the constant need to think continually about them and their situation. Take rest days when needed and unplug from email, Facebook, twitter and the phone. Reach out to a friend you can trust. And remember that you are not alone, there are so many Christian parents who are going through exactly this. There is also hope, I have personally known several people who have been delivered and set free from this lifestyle. It is not up to up to change our children, it is up to them to want to change, and of course Jesus can deliver any stronghold! Stephanie Reck, LMSW, LBT,BCCC. Christian counselor, author, speaker, and teacher. Stephanie has a passion to bring hope and encouragement and to see people made

Tips for Heating and air spring cleaning

O

ne of the most important things you can do to save money this summer on your air conditioning is spring maintenance. Having your outdoor coils clean as well as filter changed will cause your unit to run more efficiently. Cleaning the indoor coils is also important to get rid of dust build up. A thorough check up will also include draining the pan and cleaning pipes and having them treated to prevent water leaks. Leaks can rust out your unit and cause you to have to replace your air system. It's also very important to make sure all electrical components are functioning properly to prevent untimely break downs. Just a little something to keep you cool when things get hot.

INSIGHT

by Vanessa Grossett

T

his article wasn't one that I wanted to write. Mainly because I have already wrote about backsliding in my book Don't Look Back, so I really wanted to make sure this was God inspired. However every time I went into prayer Revelation 2:4 kept coming back to me, "But I have this complaint against you. You don't love me or each other as you did at first!' Though I didn't want to write this, Gods will is more important. Now backsliding is normally associated with going back to your sinful ways, the definition I found states 'to relapse into bad habits, sinful behavior, or undesirable activities.' However what has come to light is, backsliding is not always about going back to your sinful ways. You can go to church, praise the Lord, not go back to old activities and still backslid. How? You can backslide in your heart. Though you're doing well on the outside, internally your heart desire for the Lord and to do His will can be lost, and that is the most self-deceptive and dangerous backsliding of them all. Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The human heart is the deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?" I believe one of the ways this new type of backsliding has crept into the church is through the prosperity messages, the bless me it's all about me messages I like to call them. No I am not against prosperity, yes I do believe God wants us to prosper, but the prospering has become so focused on material success, that we are losing the value of the true gospel. Above all God wants us to prosper Spiritu-

ality. There are people on mission fields who have a lack of material resources, some of us might think they are not prospering but guest what they are. Spirituality they are doing the Lords work. Now you may think how are the prosperity messages backsliding? Well what does the word say, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." Matthew 4:19, the Lord wants us to be His witnesses, to be His Ambassadors so that we can bring others to Him. When we are so focused on ourselves, on Lord bless me here, there, and everywhere, we lose the focus on what God wants us to do in the first place. It becomes 'Lord do my will', rather than 'Lord not my will but yours be done.' Though one might not be going back to their old ways, in their heart they have backslidden because their focus is no longer about what the Lord wants them to do, but what the Lord can do for them. Their prayers become Lord do this for me, do that for me, and then when it doesn't happen how they want it, they become frustrated. They start losing their love for the Lord; they undermine others as well. I have witnessed this happen to friends, and in ministries. Yes ask the Lord to bless you, but don't let it be your constant focus, have a balance. Let your focus be to use the talents that He has given you to do His work, and purpose. Brethren it is important that we examine ourselves daily, as the enemy is a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. We must ask the Lord to reveal anything in our hearts that could turn us away from Him. Let us not be self-deceived, but humble enough to allow the Lord to make the change that is needed within us. 'Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.' Revelation 2:29. ■

HEALTHY YOU!

Minister Donna Nealy, MS CFT CNC ESTEEM, A Total Transformation

W

e focused on our self-worth in the last edition and we are going to stay right there. Why? Because self-worth covers all areas mental, spiritual, physical, emotional and nutritional. What is self-worth? According to the MerriamWebster Dictionary self-worth is “a feeling that you are a good person who deserves to be treated with respect.” With that definition I want us to make it applicable to our lives. What do I mean? Well in order to have a feeling that you are a good person you must first like yourself. Right?

14

MY ELIFE ■ MYELIFEMAG.COM ■ JUNE/JULY 2015 ■ 336-323-8091

So many people do not like themselves or even love themselves for that matter. I preached Sunday morning about the comparisons between the love of God and a mother’s love for her children. And the one thing I talked about was how love is a decision and not a feeling. I understand that the dictionary states that it is a feeling but when that feeling disappears, you then become victim to negative thinking about yourself and allow yourself to be treated badly. But when we make a decision to like and love ourselves, whether we feel it or not, we continue to seek and demand respect. What does this have to do with health and wellness? What you think of yourself has a great deal to do with your health and wellness. I have learned over the years while working with many clients that their health and wellness is disrupted when negative self-thoughts are present. People give up when they feel there is no hope for their situation and usually turn to food for comfort. But do you understand when we continually eat an unhealthy diet we are disrespecting ourselves? When you like and love yourself 1 Corinthians 6:19 becomes alive because it says “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself”. When we begin to understand this verse we will understand how to respect ourselves in what we put in our temple as well as how we move. Stay tuned for the next edition where we will discuss how to respect our temples where God will be pleased. ■ Until next time… Minister Donna Nealy, MS CFT CNC ESTEEM, A Total Transformation 336-345-3507 www.esteem-att.com esteemtrainer@gmail.com

COVER STORY

Ronald E. Roseboro, Jr.

R

onald Roseboro a High Point native and High Point Central grad has become one of the top real estate brokers in the Triad. None of this happened by accident but it’s a part of Ronald’s philosophy of “ nothing less than excellent service”. Ronald knew he wanted to travel and see the world after graduating high school so he enrolled in the Marine Corp and saw the world. After those initial years in the Marine Corp he went on to pursue a college degree from Winston Salem State University. Ronald has always had a heart to serve people after serving his country in Iraq, and obtaining the rank of Major in the Army Guard he decided to continue to serve people in the public business arena. There were several options ahead and one was law school. This was certainly a way to continue to serve peo-

ple but Ronald had earlier obtained an insurance license so he felt this was definitely a way to take care of people. After doing very well in insurance for 8 years Ronald had heard that most wealth is accumulated through real estate. The combination of wealth accumulation and taking care of people led him into the real estate field some 5 years ago and there is no looking back. Another key reason for his choice of real estate is the simple fact that real estate moves the economy. His partnership with Keller Williams has been the perfect fit. He was been with Keller Williams for his entire 5 years in the Real Estate industry. According to Ronald “ Keller Williams has the best training system in the industry”. Every agent and staff member has a stake in the company because they offer a profit sharing plan. All staff members are there to support the client and make sure they are completely satisfied with the process.

Learning how to control anger surely is a wise step to better tomorrow. This article gives reasons why anger is not prolonged. When angry, do not sin; do not ever let your wrath (your exasperation, your fury or indignation) last until the sun goes down. Leave no [such] room or foothold for the devil [give no opportunity to him] Ephesians 4:26-27 (AMP) Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools - Ecclesiastes 7:9 (KJV)

3. Generation of stress It is really stressful being angry. You are worked-up, your muscles get tightened and your heart beats faster than it should. If you don't cause the anger to go down before sunset, it may tend to more serious health problems. 4. Wastage of time and energy You can't do anything productive when you are angry. You use the time and energy for other meaningful things to fume and rage about what happened. Give yourself a break! 5. Sign of foolishness Surely, it is foolishness to continue being angry when you know the undesirable effects it's creating around and within you. 6. Sleepless night

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city Proverbs 16:32 (KJV) A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger appeases contention. - Proverbs 15:18 (AMP) Certainly, you will get angry sometime. But the questions are, 'what do you do when you are angry, and does your anger go down before sunset?' How well you control your temper determines how strong, matured and responsible you become. Anger is very destructive! It has destroyed many marriages and families, crippled many businesses and careers. Also, people get murdered and many nations today get ravaged because of it. Furthermore, its effect on the person who is angry is not worth experiencing. Truly, you need to curb anger. Why Anger must not be prolonged 1. It is a command God in His awesome wisdom commanded that our anger should not last until the sun goes down. This command is for our own good. 2. Room is given to the enemy You give opportunity to the devil to afflict you and to use you to do evil when your anger goes beyond a moment.

You spend part of your sleeping time still pondering and fuming over what happened, and maybe planning how to retaliate, if you have not. 7. Horrible dreams Your anger should go down before sunset. Carrying it over to sleep gives the devil the opportunity to continue his oppression even in your sleep. Certainly, you wouldn't be able to pray effectively before sleeping off when you are angry. The above reasons point out why anger should go down before sunset. They are not experiences anybody would love to have. Surely, I wouldn't want to experience them again. Sometime ago, somebody offended me and anger took over me. I fumed and raged throughout the day. I got stressed up and I couldn't write that day. It took me a long time to sleep and when I finally did, I had a horrible dream which woke me up. Now, I had to ask God for forgiveness for disobeying Him and to plead the blood of Jesus. Some days later, I got offended again. I was angry and the same process wanted to start again. This time I quickly got rid of the anger. I didn't want to give the devil room again to torment me and waste my time and energy. Your anger should go down before sunset! ■

CHRISTIAN LIVING

T

his is a difficult and sensitive subject to talk about. Many have dealt with thoughts of suicide, and have been too fearful to tell someone. Having generational curses and familiar spirits in this area can cause you to have a bent towards these spirits. A bent meaning, a weakness towards feeling or having thoughts of suicide. Usually this spirit is very patient and can wait as long as it needs to gain advantage during times of weakness. A spirit of death has one intention and that is to destroy. This is very real, though we do not wage war against flesh and blood, but unseen forces. These demons are unseen, but can be discerned spiritually as very real to us. We may hear a

20

voice or voices in our minds that say," You can have relief from all your pain." You can even hear demonic voices that can taunt you with thoughts that God does not love you, or that you have messed up so badly that there is one solution-death. Be mindful that if you have a family history of mental illness, suicide, or depression; these familiar spirits will try and destroy your life. Remember Elijah in the Bible (1 Kings 19:4), he asked God to kill him and so did Abimelech (Judges 9:54). There are ones in the Bible that contemplated and even succeeded in suicide. I believe the voice that is heard to harm oneself comes straight from the pit of hell. The mind is the battlefield. The enemy will trespass our minds and plant thoughts that are contrary to the thoughts of God. Every thought that comes into your mind, is not coming from Christ.

One of the reasons that a lot of people attempt suicide is because suicide is in their family history. When one or more family members submit to an evil spirit to commit suicide, that same spirit can persuade other family members to do the same thing. This also can include not only suicide but idolatry, divorce, pornography, addiction, lying, witchcraft, rebellion, etc. Evil spirits will live in a family line as long as they can, and will look for ones who will host them. When a person is joined together with someone who is under the influence of evil spirits they too will start to experience the same evil influence. ■

et's face it, we are consumed with business and in particularly our electronics. Our social media has ravaged our time, and we can get sucked into all the drama that are on these sites. For many, the first thing that they do in the morning is check their emails and Facebook. Not only has social media replaced time with God, but also time spent with family. You can frequently hear of people who say that they cannot live without their phone, or other electronic device. There is almost an addiction that comes with frequent use

22

of these devices. This habit can instead take the place of pulling away to spend time with God. Many people bring their phones iPad, or tablet into where they are spending time with God-what a distraction! Believe me, the enemy will cause your phone to ring during this time or your iPad/ tablet will beep to let you know you received an email. Having an iPad or computer near you during Bible study time can be valuable for looking up scripture or reading devotionals and articles online. However, this should not be the case if these will be a distraction. We have to have time where we are still and listening for the Father to speak to us. This is more difficult to do if we are not unplugging from our devices and social media. There are

MY ELIFE ■ MYELIFEMAG.COM ■ JUNE/JULY 2015 ■ 336-323-8091

COMMUNITY times when I will unplug from all my electronic devices for an entire day, yep, that's right-an entire day! You may say," I can't do that, I have children or other responsibilities." Then unplug for 30 minutes a day. Do what you can. The key is to not let your portable devices control you and take away your time to connect with God. If you are unable to put your phone or tablet down at all, there is a problem! That is unhealthy spiritually and mentally. I actually know people who go to the bathroom with their phones. There are others who cannot even have a conversation or meal with someone, because of their frequent checking of their phone. They can never be separated from their phone! How about we connect to God the way we connect to our phones? There is no time to hear God when you are addicted to these devices. How can you hear God with everything else that competes for His time? Balance in using these electronics as well as social media is imperative to great spiritual health and connection with God. Some studies have found that daily use of Facebook can make people more prone to depression, anxiety, and other psychological disorders. Research has found that the more friends one has on Facebook, the less socially adjusted they are. If Facebook can have this effect on our relationships with others, what kind of effect do you think it has on our relationship with God? Most likely, there is a distance and disconnection to God. There must be time that we can step away from all of these gadgets, and get refreshed from the spirit of the living God. CHALLENGE: Unplug from all your devices and social media for at least 30 minutes a day, longer if you can. Bring a journal, your bible, a pen and get ready to hear from God. Share with me your challenges and victories of unplugging. Got a praise report from this challenge, share with our readers! Thank you and may God bless you as you take this step to connect to the True Vine. ■

"The City Of Praise" Psalm 48:1-2

Q – If a person dies in a backslidden state, will they go to Heaven? A – To backslide means to start doing something bad again after you have stopped it. To lapse morally or in the practice of religion. To revert to a worse condition or retrogress. In addition the word backslide also means turning away, rebellious, or apostasy. A backslider is a person who neglects his or her vows of obedience and falls into sin. Although, many people give several excuses for backsliding, however, if a person is found in that state spiritually, I believe to a heavy degree that this will without question jeopardize their place in Heaven. Revelation 22:11, “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.” Read these scriptures for more information: Hebrews 10:26-31; 1 John 1:9; Proverbs 14:14; 2 Chronicles 7:14; Jeremiah 3:22. In 2 Peter 2:22 it speaks about backsliding or a backslider, “But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.” Proverbs 26:11, “So a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly or foolishness.” No one can make it to Heaven in a backslidden state.” Q - Is gambling a sin according to the Bible? A – Simply put and I certainly do hate to rain on anyone’s parade but gambling as according to the Bible is without one doubt a sin. Because gambling is a waste of money or consist of the love of money. We are taught biblically how to be good stewards or managers over our finances. I understand that people waste money on all kinds of activities, however, gambling is no more or less of a waste of money than eating an unnecessarily expensive meal, or purchasing a worthless item. The fact that money or finances is wasted

on other things does not completely justify gambling. Money should not be wasted (period)! We are taught to be good stewards over our finances. Any extra money we have should be saved for a much more needed time in the future or given to the Lord’s work, not gambled away. For those individuals who this subject might strike as touchy, think about this for a moment. If you attend a church somewhere, how well would your church be financially if you would start taking the extra money you have and put it in the church verses the game room, sweepstakes or purchasing a stretch off and lottery ticket? I am sure many Pastors have heard this next statement just as much as I have, “Bishop, when the Lord blesses me with some money, I am going to bless the church, pay my tithes, give an offering but often times these people get their money or blessing and we do not see them until they need another blessing. I suggest to everyone, instead of gambling or wasting your money, give it to the work of the Lord, the church or some foundation or agency of outreach in your local community. This would include a food bank, clothing pantry, a canned food drive, or a toy drive. Instead of gambling it away, give it away, “Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give unto your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” Mark 6:38. Also read, Proverbs 13:11; 16:33; 28:22; 1 Timothy 6:10; Hebrews 13:5; Matthew 6:24; Ecclesiastes 5:10; Ephesians 4:28; Luke 12:15; 16:13; Acts 20:35. ■

Helping a Friend in

GRIEF By Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D.

A

friend has experienced the death of someone loved. You want to help, but you are not sure how to go about it. This article will guide you in ways to turn your cares and concerns into positive actions.

Listen with your heart. Helping begins with your ability to be an active listener. Your physical presence and desire to listen without judging are critical helping tools. Don't worry so much about what you will say. Just concentrate on listening to the words that are being shared with you. Your friend may relate the same story about the death over and over again. Listen attentively each time. Realize this repetition is part of your friend's healing process. Simply listen and understand. Be compassionate. Give your friend permission to express his or her feelings without fear of criticism. Learn from your friend; don't instruct or set expectations about how he or she should respond. Never say, "I know just how you feel." You don't. Think about your helper role as someone who "walks with," not "behind" or "in front of" the one who is mourning. Allow your friend to experience all the hurt, sorrow and pain that he or she is feeling at the time. Enter into your friend's feelings, but never try to take them away. And recognize that tears are a natural and appropriate expression of the pain associated with the death.

Avoid clichés. Words, particularly clichés, can be extremely painful for a grieving friend. Clichés are trite comments often intended to diminish the loss by providing simple solutions to difficult realities. Comments like, "You are holding up so well," "Time heals all wounds," "Think of all you still have to be thankful for" or "Just be happy that he's out of his pain" are not constructive. Instead, they hurt and make a friend's journey through grief more difficult. Understand the uniqueness of grief. Keep in mind that your friend's grief is unique. No one will respond to the death of someone loved in exactly the same way. While it may be possible to talk about similar phases shared by grieving people, everyone is different and shaped by experiences in their own unique lives. Because the grief experience is also unique, be patient. The process of grief takes a long time, so allow your friend to proceed at his or her own pace. Don't force your own timetable for healing. Don't criticize what you believe is inappropriate behavior. And while you should create opportunities for personal interaction, don't force the situation if your grieving friend resists. Offer practical help. Preparing food, washing clothes, cleaning the house or answering the telephone are just a few of the practical ways of showing you care. And, just as with your presence, this support is needed at the time of the death and in the weeks and months ahead. Continued on Page 28

A Plan for Protecting Your Most Valuable Asset:

Your Children!

I

f you have young children, chances are that your summer activities include some careful planning to keep them safe from harm. Unfortunately, even with proper precautions in place, accidents do happen and not just to children. Have you planned for what will happen to your children if you are the one involved in a tragic accident? If you don’t put the proper legal protections in place and the unthinkable happens to you, any number of things could happen to your children, and none of them are good: 

Your children could be put in the care of Child Protective Services, even temporarily. You never want strangers determining your children’s fate.

Your children could be put in the custody of someone you would never want to have them by a judge who does not know you or your family dynamics.

Your family could get into a fight about the custody of your children.

Your estate can be thrown into probate, with a portion of your assets going to court costs and fees -- money that your children could use in the future.

If you have significant assets, those could go to your children once they turn 18 in one lump sum that they will likely not be prepared to handle properly.

There are so many bad things that can happen to your children should something bad happen to you. You need to designate someone to act as a guardian for your children. That person should be someone that is most like you, the person that will

26

MY ELIFE ■ MYELIFEMAG.COM ■ JUNE/JULY 2015 ■ 336-323-8091

welcome your children into their home and love them as if they were their own. If you don’t designate a person to take care of your children, the court system will do it for you and the Judge may not choose the person you would have chosen. So what should you do? You can protect your children by setting up a children’s trust in your will and naming someone to manage the inheritance instead of the court. You can also decide when the children will inherit. But the trust cannot be funded until the will has been probated, and that can take precious time and could reduce the assets. If you become incapacitated, this trust does not go into effect…because a will cannot go into effect until after you die. A better option is a revocable living trust, the preferred option for many parents and grandparents. The person you select, not the court, will be able to manage the inheritance for your minor children or grandchildren until they reach the age you want them to inherit—even if you become incapacitated. Your children’s needs and circumstances can be accommodated, just as you would do. Every parent should make sure their children are provided for in the event something happens to them while the children are still minors. Young families need a comprehensive set of instructions and legal documents that will ensure your kids will be raised by someone you choose and that your assets are protected for their well-being. Protecting your children requires that you say “out loud” what you want and then put it “in writing!” ■

Spiritual Rejoice Grace "... Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things." Philippians 4:8. NKJV.               

The Bread of Life never gets stale. The Bible isn’t antique or modern, it is eternal. If it is important to you, it is important to Him. Feed your faith and your doubts will starve to death. God doesn’t call us to be successful – He calls us to be faithful. Honesty is not only the best policy, it is the Will of God. Seven days without prayer makes one "weak". An early walk and talk with the Lord will last all day. When all else fails, trust God! Help is always just a prayer away. If you can’t sleep, don’t count sheep; talk to the Shepherd! A lot of kneeling will keep you in good standing. Trust God to supply all of your needs; allow Him to be your Provider. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath. A hug may make someone’s day better.

Make contact. Your presence at the funeral is important. As a ritual, the funeral provides an opportunity for you to express your love and concern at this time of need. As you pay tribute to a life that is now passed, you have a chance to support grieving friends and family. At the funeral, a touch of your hand, a look in your eye or even a hug often

Life is fragile – handle with prayer. Keep your words sweet; you may have to eat them.  Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.  Faith is obedience without knowing the results.  Remember, actions always speak louder than any words spoken.  It is hard to stumble, when you are on your knees.  God wants us to be more thrilled by His "Presence" – than His presents!  Patience is a virtue which carries a lot of "Wait."  A smile is a frown God has turned upside down.  Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  Dare to love without asking to be loved in return.  When God saw you, it was love at first sight!  God loves each one of us as though there were only one to love. communicates more than any words could ever say. Don't just attend the funeral then disappear, however. Remain available in the weeks and months to come, as well. Remember that your grieving friend may need you more later on than at the time of the funeral. A brief visit or a telephone call in the days that follow are usually appreciated. Write a personal note. Sympathy cards express your concern, but there is no substitute for your personal written words. What do you

say? Share a favorite memory of the person who died. Relate the special qualities that you valued in him or her. These words will often be a loving gift to your grieving friend, words that will be reread and remembered for years. Use the name of the person who has died either in your personal note or when you talk to your friend. Hearing that name can be comforting, and it confirms that you have not forgotten this important person who was so much a part of your friend's life. ■

CHRISTIAN BUSINESS

Haven’t Filed Your Taxes in Years?

I

began working with a couple that found themselves in the same boat as many of my clients who neglect to file their federal and state income taxes. At first, they expected to catch up when financial times got better. Now, with years of delinquent taxes piled up, the task seems too daunting to

tackle. Nothing strikes fear in the hearts of people more than receiving an IRS Audit letter in the mail. Audits take significant time away from your business and family, requiring you to gather mounds of records substantiating each and every item reported on your tax return and develop a comprehensive understanding of tax law. The IRS leaves no stone unturned in its mission to determine the accuracy of your tax return. If you don't comply with the Auditors' wishes, the IRS will recalculate your tax and send you home with a hefty tax bill as your parting gift.

Many taxpayers decide to handle a tax audit themselves, and discover they may have been "penny wise," avoiding a representative's fee, but "pound foolish," because they received a substantial bill for a significant tax deficiency. You see, IRS Auditors are trained to extract more information from you than you have a legal obligation to provide. IRS Auditors know that most people fear them and are ignorant of their rights. As a result, they know they can use that fear and ignorance to their advantage. Rarely do our clients even have to talk with the IRS. We handle it all for you so that you need not take time off of your business or job to handle the bureaucracy and paperwork of the IRS. No lost wages or business. You simply forward notification of an audit to us and we handle it from A to Z. ■

If you've received an audit notice from the IRS, Please call me at 336 996 7650 or email at info@ancaccountingservices.com to receive a Free Consultation with our tax specialist.
