Forward Magazine is a student led publication that produces one issue per semester. We are based on ideas of culture, art, lifestyle and most importantly, fashion. We are a team of graphic designers, photographers, stylists, journalists and event planners. As a 100% student led club, we take pride in producing work that is nothing less than our very own. Each photo came from the lens of a photographer who brought our vision to life. Each layout, spread design and even our very own logo was crafted by our graphic designers who work hard to create Forward’s recognizable aesthetic. Our stylists team up to create a completely hand-picked, one-of-a-kind wardrobe,

Although these elements are what physically make us Forward Magazine, our most important aspect is the idea of “together.” Perhaps this is how we live up to our name, Forward. We come across many obstacles throughout the creative process of producing a publication; one does not learn without them. We get through them and move forward, together. We brainstorm and plan, together. We strive for diversity, and we are constantly pushing ourselves and our teams to innovate, but we do it together. We hope you enjoy this issue of Forward Magazine, as it is nothing short of a “passion project” created by students who are simply doing what they love.

Letter from the editor
My name is Maria DeYoung and I am currently a Junior at UW Stout studying Professional Communications and Emerging Media, with a concentration in Applied Journalism. I would like to start out by saying that joining this student organization, Forward Magazine, has defined, inspired and already created the path I’ve always hoped I would find. I’ve always been torn between two passions since I was young; writing and fashion. I started my search for that “aha!” moment, where you know you are exactly where you are meant to be, and what you want to do with the rest of your life at the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago. I studied Fashion Business and was able to learn extremely valuable knowledge of how the world of fashion works. My time in Chicago and a few (extremely important) connections essentially led to landing an internship at Diane von Furstenberg in New York City. It was here that I had my “aha!” moment, that

As she stepped down from her role, she was still an extremely important resource for me and made sure I knew that I was taking on her “baby.” So thank you, Katelynn, for trusting me with this role. I also have to thank the Executive Board, for holding our foundation and being our roots, as they want nothing

They moved in together after a while knowing of each other, and they were as happy as happy could be. As months passed, the more they gained knowledge about the passions, aspirations, and goals the other had. Purples deep tone showed their ambition and goals in one another. They wanted to see what life had to offer them. She was an artist, and he was a successful business man. They spent days at work, then at night, coming home to one another to eat dinner, relax on the couch, lay together, and watch whatever movies they could find, letting red have a moment every now and then. But with success comes opportunities, and even though they may be great, they are hard to accept in one another. He was asked to travel the country, and she was going to miss him.

She was his world, and all the lonely moments away, made him crave to be with her again. A week or two may not seem that long, but when your mind is elsewhere, it feels like eternity. He loved her in all her different colors. The unique hues they shared made for a palette that was shared between them, and them only. 15

She was fascinated with color, it made her light up inside. Each stroke of her paint brush came automatically. Her fascination made her show orange. Art brought her joy, and energy, but not as much as he did. Seeing him again from traveling afar make her heart jump every time. There has never been a time when there was a blue moment upon greeting each other. Fascination and joy created the orange shades that enveloped them both. He returned once more, this was his last time. He spoke of no more traveling, and if there was, it would be the two of them together. She was of more worth than a company to him. There was always more opportunities for work, but there was only one of her.
Happiness is the key to living. Without happiness, there is no society, no life, just the motions we go through. Yellow is the surrounding of happiness. Lush bright tones led him and her to a life unlike any other. It’s the strength, the love, we all wish we could have. Never-ending. When yellow becomes overpowering, it forms into gold. The ring that he proposed to her with, with a clean-cut diamond. The reflections of the stone reflected a palette, a rainbow that represented the life they felt together. The two were no longer a white, pure palette. They were a palette used, mixed, and filled with shades upon shades of all the colors they created. 16

BY: ASHLEY ANDERSON One of the most important decades that made fashion and pop culture interchangeable and set trends that later became today’s wardrobe staples is the 90’s era. The 90’s was a time for experimenting and funk, it was a time where a lot of new music, sounds and television that influence the pop culture we see today, debuted. Along with this came eclectic 90’s style, whether it was shown in movies and television shows, or it was the outfits that celebs and musicians wore or it was inspired by the tone and mood of certain music genres, it became a part of pop culture.
Iconic looks from stars like Winona Ryder, Will Smith in the Fresh Prince, Jennifer Aniston and Britney Spears shocked the world and became a predecessor of many similar trends that followed and that we see today, when premiered. These looks all had

fitted clothing, dirty black boots and band tees. She premiered these looks in movies such as ‘Reality Bites’, ‘Girl Interrupted’ and ‘Heathers’. At the time rock and grunge music was a huge influence in pop culture and the actress displayed that through her edgy style. It brought about a new wave of badassery for ‘outcast’ girls who didn’t fit the sweet bubblegum image.

Will Smith during the airings of ‘Fresh Prince Of Bel-air’ had style that reflected the new cool kid hip hop trend that entered the 90’s, his fashion was very much inspired by the rap group Criss Kross. He donned oversized jackets ,patterned harem pants, high waisted jeans and hats, all with insane eye catching patterns and colors. His goofy charming personality was very much projected throughout his wardrobe, it was loud, unapologetic, confident and cool. Pushing boundaries for the hip hop genre and gender as a whole Will Smith premiered this iconic style in every episode of ‘Fresh Prince’. With an obvious contrast to his tv family members, this upbeat funky style signified a sense of originality and culture.
In 1994 a new iconic trend set foot in America and it was called the “Rachel Green haircut”. From the hit 90’s show ‘Friends’ Jennifer Aniston’s character Rachel Green premiered different haircuts every season, however in 1994 she sparked the scene with a new do- a layered and highlighted shaggy cut. The hairstyle inspired many American women to go out and attempt to achieve the same look, a number of salons even claimed having a mass influx of customers requesting“ The Rachel”! This 90’s hairstyle is seen today in many different variations of layered cuts and proves a staple in 90’s cultural influences due to the longevity and effect it had through popular media onto masses.
25
the music issue
Last but not least, the 90’s it girl that had America’s full attention and garnered much controversy was Britney Spears. Britney Spears was everyone’s dream girl, she had major sex appeal because she represented the girl next door, you either wanted to be her or be with her, she exemplified the average American girl, only sexier. Her big break in 90’s style was in 1998 when she premiered her video for “Baby One More Time”, she wore the iconic sexy schoolgirl outfit which introduced a trend and peak in the sexualizng of teen girl clothing and style, many girls across America strived for a sexy but cute look, even replicating the outfit itself, with cropped button ups, knee high socks and pleated skirts. The look is still talked about today and made a huge impact in pop culture for music and style. The 90’s introduced a new era of eclectic music, movies and shows and with this came iconic fashion styles that grew from each platform and was widely sported across America. Whether it was a hairstyle or clothing that depicted music genres or a very daring trend, they all resonated with Americans and became a way to show personality and originality through style.

BEHIND THE MAGIC Justin Vernon (Born April 30, 1981) born and raised in Eau Claire Wisconsin, opened a hipster hangout that has Eau Claire raving. A destination boutique hotel and restaurant/bar that has evolved Eau Claire into a new target city. As mentioned earlier, Justin Vernon was born and raised in Eau Claire; attended high school in the area and studied at the University. There, he studied Religious Studies and minored in Women Studies. Vernon has been part of many bands and many projects but is famously known for the indie folk band, Bon Iver. Vernon released Bon Iver’s debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, and ever since they have been prominent in the music industry. Success does not fall short for Justin, from working with music icon Kanye West, to earning a Grammy for being the Best New Artist, he has done great things thus far in his musical career.
THE OXBOW A boutique hotel with only 30 rooms puts Eau Claire back on the map with it’s hipster/lumberjack’s paradise feel. The entire hotel has an aesthetic feel of the northern woods combined with a modern boutique vibe. There are two types of rooms to choose from, options including; The Main House which is two suites and a living room or The Flats, a motel-style room that opens up to the courtyards.

Each room adorns contemporary art, woolen blankets, and an in-room turntable with Bon Iver’s 22, A Million Record. Along with a mini bar and local food from Eau Claire ready to be purchased. And it doesn’t stop there, down in the lobby of the hotel there is a mass selection of vinyl to be rented out by the guests. As well as, a gift shop to buy your own contemporary art pieces, woolen blankets, and coffee mugs. The entire place is lovely(help me find a different word), cozy, and inviting.

Whether it’s quietly listening to Jessica Simpson’s “With You” before bed, or secretly listening to that hit Sean Paul song from 2003 every morning on the way to class, everyone has their guilty pleasures. I asked some students across campus what their guilty pleasures were. I got a variety of answers.

Why do our guilty pleasures secretly make us happy? Studies show that guilt can sometimes cause pleasure. When we do things we deem as things we shouldn’t be doing, it can create positive emotions. The feeling of happiness comes from our minds feeling free from both ours and others judgement as well as overthinking. As a byproduct of feeling that way, we also see ourselves as living more in the moment. So next time you have a stressful day, throw on that “Livin’ La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin, drop it low, and look back at it.

BY: BROOKE ROSSI I wanna boy who thinks it’s sexy when my lipstick bleeds.” These lyrics are the clever words of the queer punk duo, PWR BTTM, in their song “I Wanna Boi.” Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce, both identifying as genderqueer, started creating music shortly after meeting in college. The duo wanted a band name that could successfully represent them. Liv had been holding onto the band name “Power Bottom” ever since high school. They finally concluded that PWR BTTM was the one after deciding that leaving it as the full words would lead their fans into a sea of porn. According to Wikipedia, the term “power bottom” refers to “a receptive partner who eschews submission to play a dominant role during

sex.” Even when a power bottom is “bottoming,” they maintain a dominate role. The duo uses their name as a label of empowerment. Their music has unique sound for each track. Currently, PWR BTTM has one album, two EPs, and 4 singles. The style of their music ranges from slower, thought-provoking music to music of the dance and head banging variety. Their lyrics seem to almost be casual and can be very relatable for queer individuals listening. PWR BTTM even takes on a casual tone as it switches around gendered pronouns in their lyrics. Their song, “Ugly Cherries,” presents the lyrics, “My girl gets scared / Can’t take him anywhere” and “My girl’s so sad / Everything I do makes him mad / Cries

BTTM’s music coming soon. They plan to stay true to themselves, which is seen as a great importance right now with the LGBTQ movement on the rise. After the mass killing of many LGBTQ persons and their allies at a gay nightclub, PWR BTTM’s heavier lyrics are seen as a voice for those involved in the queer movement. As Liv says in the interview for PAPER Magazine, “We’re living in a time where people 103

As the two members said on their Twitter account (@ PWRBTTMBAND), their upcoming album WILL be gayer than the first one.
