Forward magazine, formerly known as FAB, is a fashion based publication entirely created by University of Wisconsin- Stout students. We take a look at fashion in a conceptual way relating it to current social issues, pop culture, and forward thinking ideas. Fashion plays a large role in culture and we strive to portray that. We house our own photography, journalism, styling, and graphic design teams. We are an expanding organization and welcome everyone to join our teams!
DESIGN NOTES For the very first issue after our re-branding from FAB magazine into Forward, we wanted to make a a bold entrance into the world. We thought long and hard about what our theme were to be for this issue and when we decided on phobias, I knew we could do something truly unique with it. We researched and tried to get to the very essense of what a phobia is. In my research, I found that all of these phobias we had selected all had one common thread. Each person who is affected by these phobias experiences extreme anxiety and panic during their exposure to said phobia and many phobias are caused by unknown forces. When designing the magazine, I wanted to try to capture this feeling of anxiety and eerie mystery surrounding phobias. We decided on using glitch art to help convey this feeling as we thought of phobias as a sort of glitch in the brain. We hope you enjoy this issue of Forward and continue to support this student run club.

[ALL-TOH-FOH-BEE-UH] “Altophobia is a persistent and extreme or irrational morbid fear of heights. Depending on the phobia’s severity, an acrophobic person may equally fear being on a high floor of a building, climbing a ladder and any other activity that involves being at height. This is one of the most common phobias which cause an intense, irrational fear of objects or situations.”
[SPEK-TRO-FOH-BEE-UH] Specific phobia involving a morbid fear of mirrors. This phobia is disticnt from eisoptrophobia, which is the fear of one’s own reflection. Generally, an individual thar deals with this phobia has been traumatized in an event where they believe they have seen or heard ghosts. The individual could also become traumatized by horror films, television shows, or by nightmares. It could also be the result of the person’s superstitious fear of being watched through the mirror.

The twisting of your own reality, an anxiety extracted from your psyche. Spectrophobia: the fear of mirrors. History will tell the tales of individuals staring at their reflections in pools of water. Those individuals misinterpreted their mirrored images as their souls skittish, and the fear of their reflection would bloom. While people now have the knowledge that their mirrored image in merely a reflection, a second fear has come into play to push the existence of Spectrophobia into the modern age, Dysmorphophobia, the fear of deformity. Pushed more by society, people have grown to fear mirrors as a result of their imperfections. While most people no longer fear the reflection of their soul, they have created an anxiety against their external being, allowing the fear of mirrors to linger.

Aurophobia is the fear of gold. The main symptom of aurophobia is panic attacks, although different symptoms can suffer different symptoms, like fast breathing, nausea, irregular heartbeat, and slow breathing. The symptoms, especially panic attacks, are usually triggered when the sufferers sees or gets in vicinity of gold. Aurophobia is often treated by simply removing the memory from the mind that triggers it.

CLAUSTROPHOBIC By Maria DeYoung Claustrophobia is defined as “an abnormal fear of being in enclosed or narrow places.” When one is claustrophobic, they feel as though they have no escape. A victim of claustrophobia must have a complete view of their surroundings in order to feel comfortable in the space they are in. The feeling this phobia brings is defined as a feeling of “numbness.” Numbness is associated to having no feeling at all, whereas with claustrophobia, the victim is actually experiencing a “stimulation overload.” Claustrophobics believe there is a possibility of lack of air in the confined space they are in, which results in every-day activities becoming stressful situations.
[HY-EL-OH-FOH-BEE-UH] Hyelophobia is an extreme or irrational fear or phobia of heights, especially when one is not particularly high up. It belongs to a category of specific phobias, called space and motion discomfort, that share both similar etiology and options for treatment. Most people experience a degree of natural fear when exposed to heights, known as the fear of falling. On the other hand, those who have little fear of such exposure are said to have a head for heights.

Only their narrow eyes follow Kael’s movements now. In an instant, the room goes completely dark, but the light returns just as quickly. Sophie is there. Though he has imagined seeing her again since the day she became engaged, the sight of her here causes him to shudder. She is coming towards him from one pane of glass, and somehow there is only one of her. This is how Kael knows she can’t be real.
Kael knows it’s Sophie, even
though he can only view her from the bottom up. Her feet are bare, her tan calves also bare. A skirt seemingly made of beads dangles just below her knees. Kael gasps sharply when his eyes are allowed to move over her torso. It is encircled with shards of glass that catch the light like fish scales. Above this her collarbone juts out sharply as glass. Kael doesn’t remember it looking like that. Her dark hair, so black it’s almost midnight blue, sways loose inches above her waist. But her eyes. This is where Kael forgets everything else he knows to be true about Sophie. At first they are the light blue-green he remembers, but as she glides closer to him he sees each pupil is a shard of glass. Kael cries out, but the sound chokes in his throat. What he sees next nearly destroys him. Behind each beautiful, perilous shard of pupil is Sophie. There is one of her in each of her eyes, and again he knows he must choose.
With the snakelike voice of

Ommetaphobia develops when someone has a bad situation or traumatic event occur in their life involving eyes (i.e., seeing an eye pop out of the socket, getting hit in the eye, going blind in an eye, etc.). Ommetaphobia is considered a social phobia because it involves social situations (i.e., looking into someone’s eyes, touching your eyes, things getting into your eyes, etc.). However, I would imagine it could also be considered a specific phobia. For example, someone seeing eyes floating in a jar could send them into a panic.”

[PAHY-RUH-FOH-BEE-UH] Pyrophobia is an irrational fear of fire, beyond what is considered normal. This phobia is ancient and primordial, perhaps since mankind’s discovery of fire. The most common cause of pyrophobia is that fire poses a potential danger, such as house fire, wildfire, and getting caught on fire. Some people who are intensely pyrophobic cannot even get close to or tolerate even a small controlled fire, such as fireplace, bonfire or lit candle.

Searing my young flesh, A brazen flame hazes the calls of my name. I feel hell’s heat nearing. With its demons peering, I kick at the door, I couldn’t muster more. Sheering pain, embodied by the flame. Then came the blood curdling screams, my own skin, made into nothing by fire’s sin. Teams of firemen enter. Schemes forged by the darkest heart, I’m saved, but the flame is forever the same. The Devil prefers fire for a reason it seems. all is destroyed by what the fire deems
