EDITORIAL The advent of a great soul! To live along with one's immediate environment is the essence of Dharma, and the prophets are the paragons of Dharma. Over the time, to alleviate the pain and suffering of the ailing humanity they take advents and descend down the earth and propagate their ideology which is best suited for that particular time and circumstance. The world gets a messiah, a savior in flesh and blood. With the ascent of time, distortions creep in and the ideology taught by these great masters become murky until they come back again and propagate their teachings in a newer and more upgraded form. This cycle continues over and over again. But, there is a very important part or incidence which takes place in between. The advent of some great souls of extraordinary caliber who, by the virtue of their strong sense of service and zeal for the ideal, are born with the birthright to complete the tasks directed by the Lord. This month ushers in with it the birthday of one such great soul. The true and dedicated bhakta of Sree Sree Thakur, HIS great-grandson, Rev. Babai dada. The one whose every breath, every moment flows just for the fulfillment of the ideal. Such extraordinary souls are adored by one and all as deities and angels. They have the capacity to transform lives of millions of grief-stricken individuals into the heavenly breeze of bliss. There is no saying that how many individuals have found a new hope in their lives. How many lives have been shaped and molded in the hue of the ideal by the guidance of Rev. Babai dada. This magazine itself, would not be possible without the holy guidance of Rev. Babai dada. Although adored by millions, yet we find in him an epitome of humility who considers himself just a servant of Sree Sree Thakur. The Leela or the divine play of the Lord is always completed by such great devotees. When the Ideal leaves His physical frame, it is these devotees, these extraordinary souls, these Mahapurushas, in whom the Ideal is ever awake. The 50th birthday of Rev. Babai dada was celebrated with absolute magnificence and splendor in Satsang Deoghar. The grand celebration was administrated and organized by Rev. Abin babu, where people from all across the nation as well as the neighboring countries accumulated and participated in the events. This again is a practical demonstration of Sree Sree Thakur's ideology that when there is common ideal, the whole world turns into our own relation, the eternal concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam! The Godliness peeps through Rev. Babai dada. On the occasion of his 50 th Birthday, we offer our heartiest pranam at his holy feet and pray to the Almighty for his long life and sound health so that millions may get inspired and walk on the Ideal centric path by his holy guidance. Vande Purushottamam!

TO LOVE YOUR COUNTRY— LOVE YOUR FOREFATHERS
Reverential worship of forefathers, their lands, temple-houses with pious offerings and valorous admiration for them imparts energetic adherence to the clan, country, hearth and home with environmental fellow-feeling and induces one’s heart with ingrained affection for them creating an abiding atmosphere and sympathetic uplift in the inner core of the being ; so, I think it should be an unavoidable custom of the people to act in this way with an irresistible inducement to their lore and affinity of love ; Page 10 of 100
if you wish to love your country, love your forefathers who reside in your being— their hearth and home temples and lands— with every apt conscientious consciousness and sanctified devoutness ; be blessed and bestow bliss upon the people and the country.

(1 Day of Bengali Month Ashadha, 1346 Bengali Year, Friday (16/06/1939) (Continued from previous issue) Sri Sri Thakur is lying on a cot with support on a pillow near the Kaltala house adjacent to the dam in a thatched hut. Chaturbhujda (Upadhyay) came and offered obeisance. Sri Sri Thakur said in an affectionate tone, “Chaturbhuj, put your fullest efforts. (Later again HE said) Do you have a brother residing in Shillong? I have heard that he knows Bangla. See if you can bring him in here. Bring in some milkmen, some skilled smiths, if you can bring such people, the workshop can be run in full swing. People skilled in works like running lathe, soldering, electroplating etc can sustain their income from the workshop itself. If you can bring in some ‘Military Man’, it would be extremely useful – they can impart military training, you people shall have a sort of religious fort, which shall serve as a refuge tot those in need of shelter during hard times. In the noon, discussions were going on about Palmistry, Astrology and Spiritualism. Due to urge, a tension is produced in our brain cells and due to that tension; lines are produced in our palms. Same is the case of forehead. We ourselves are the creator of our own future. We are unaware of that but it can be observed from the palms. The time of birth of a person may predict his whole life in the same fashion. If, the passions ruling the person can be determined by observing the planetary positions at the time of birth, then their interactions in his life may infer the life of that person. If the circumference of a tire of a car is known, then we can easily deduce the distance travelled by it in a particular number of rotations. It is difficult to predict anything about those who are the masters of complexes, How they would react in a particular circumstance, entirely depends upon themselves (not the complexes). About
me, Bhrigu has said that it can not be properly fathomed and said what all probabilities do I possess. When a man is goaded by God then this stands true for him. When a man has unwavering attachment towards God, he can even escape the fruits of his karma. Had Jatinda (Jatindranath Acharya-Chowdhury) listened to me and had not gone, he wouldn’t have died like that. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A boy in tapovan boarding is very sick and hence Sree sree Thakur is anxious. He is repeatedly asking about his condition. In the afternoon HE said,-- The offsprings of Hypogamous marriage can never be good. In them Treachery is to be found for sure. A girl of higher varna, if married to a lower varna boy, lacks the regard for her husband that lead to many unwanted consequences. In those cases, it is heard that the wife, out of intense hatred towards the husband, even goes on to abuse her children. There is a huge difference between Acquisition and Instinct. Newton was mathematician by instinct. There might be some who are more learned in mathematics than him but their learning may not have transformed into instincts. Instinct is normal just like a heart beats, ears hear, nose breathes or legs walk. A boy from higher pedigree might be utterly stupid in lack of proper culture, but within him the instincts are very much intact. When and where there is a disruption of instincts, it is for sure that somehow hypogamous marriage has crept into it or there has been some infraction in the principle of marriage. Owing to corruption, many a times, hypogamous offsprings are born in he so-called decent families. It is not impossible that in the womb of a Brahmani, a
Page 12 of 100
shudra has sired an offspring who is acclaimed as a Brahmin offspring in the society. Then HE said – Owing to the complexes, sometimes, people hear something else than what is said to him. All these things indicate about his character. His nature and character is spoken up by himself (through his actions). Deducing these things, if someone else infers about his nature, he is considered as an Antaryami (Indweller). But the thing is not like that. Everything can be deduced by knowing the cause-effect relationship – Even after hearing it wrong, why did he hear it in that particular way and not anything else?

Katha Prasange (Continued from previous issue) Q. Then when do we turn into deceitful devotees? Sri Sri Thakur: If the door between doing and speaking are closed that closed door shall make you a hypocrite. Q. Then those, who are not what they look like, but can act like that, can they turn into good devotees? Shree Shree Thakur: Of course they can! If there is synchronization between their words, actions, and thoughts. See, In my childhood once I heard a story that a prostitute used to enact Jaidev's wife in a theater. While enacting, one day something in her changed and she became crazy for God. The days at the stage theater came to an end – and in the stage of the worldly theater, her devotion deputed her in the act of devotion. She too, with a gradual ascent of time, completely forgot what she used to be; and her immediate environment, illumined by her words, her animated and ever alive ache (for God) her virtuous deeds, became enchanted by her service and became irradiated with her character's vigorous zeal. Even after knowing her past, no one could ever again bring forth any such (unholy ) thoughts about her. Her Ideal held her hand and pulled her away from the ultimate heavenly luxuries of the world and roamed around them. Hell was extinguished, Heaven with a slight grin, embraced her and her fragrance illumined far and wide. Do you fathom why all these happened? Words and deeds gradually became attuned and the gateway to the thoughts was ushered in. And it was then that she ceased to be what she originally was.
love only, does only such things which are dictated by love, and his thoughts are shaped in the same fashion*. People call him a devotee. If he starts calling or thinking of himself what people call him then because of that the very reason (because of which people called him a devotee) would be negated and along with it the attunement between his deeds and thoughts too will be hampered. In an attempt of false artistic workmanship, many divulged deeds will be done. Because in his mind he will always work out the various ways people may call him a devotee. The door of words, deeds, and thoughts shall automatically shut down. And this closed door shall make it very clear to the people and abruptly they will comprehend and may even blurt out that he is nothing but a hypocrite. See then, how much huge difference does it make. Hence in his destiny, instead of adoration, only disrespect becomes normal. Footnotes: ± I hope you have not been leading a double life, pretending to be wicked and being really good all time. That would be hypocrisy. -- Oscar Wilde * From our acts and from our attitudes, ceaseless inpouring currents of sensation come which help to determine from moment to moment what our inner states shall be. That is a fundamental law of psychology. -- William James ₸ Love never reasons, but profusely gives; gives like a thoughtless prodigal it's all, and trembles then lest it has done too little. --Hannah More
Q: Is it possible that in an attempt to act in this manner, receiving adorations from people might turn the mind into a greedy one to receive adorations and may thereby lose the original trail? Sree Sree Thakur: Stop being such an idiot! Have you gone crazy? It's like reading the entire Ramayana and still calling Sita Rama's aunt! The one who truly loves, does he ever think himself as a devotee? ₸ He speaks of

ENJOYING THE BELOVED THROUGH JAAJAN When love or wisdom makes life elated, then only does the inclination to Jaajan become ardent in searching for new persons in various ways; it wants to speak in various ways and in various fashions about what is dear to it, and by doing so wants to enjoy in various ways; whenever you see that this searching and finding is beginning to stop, the perception and expansion of the beloved within you is becoming inert! 58

I am Mad about You! Composed By: Bijaya Ketan Sahu Bangalore There are many mad persons, mad for material happiness of world; But, Oh My Lord, I don't know for you only, why I am so mad.
When I think myself neglecting you, I feel no one with me, I am all alone! Again, when I find you are within me, My heart becomes peaceful like heaven.
I can't stay a moment without you, What a magic you have done to me! I find always your sweet smiled face, when-ever and where-ever I see.
My lips only call unto You, My tongue sings the songs of your fame. My eyes drop tears in your love, My tongue recites your holy name.
My soul awaits for the time to you, when it will meet; When that day will come Oh supreme God, I will find my destination at your holy feet.
You always come in my day’s work At night you come in dreams of mine. Let my life go on like this Oh Lord, thinking of you every time.

How to rectify our miseries Partha Pratim Roy, SPR MUMBAI Miseries are initiated by our senses. If we are to become truly free and learn to live by God's will, we need to learn to control the passions that result from the way we react to our senses. For example, we may crave for certain foods. When we are deprived of them we become disturbed and possibly even become angry. Gaining freedom from these likes and dislikes is what we mean by taming the passions. When we are able to do this, we gain the freedom to do God's will and to love others. Everything God has created is good. It means we should enjoy what is necessary for our welfare but also forego all the indulgences based on our desires for sensual pleasure. We cannot simply ignore the passions. With untrained passions, it is like having a team of wild horses pulling our wagon. We think we are the driver, but the horses decide to go where they want. These wild horses are the untamed passions. The challenge is to harness and train your passions so that they will follow our commands, just like a trained team of horses is obedient to the commands of the driver. Our passions are like a pet. If you have ever had a puppy you would be able to relate that how they take a shoe or any other item and chew on it and tear it apart. They growl when we try to take it back from them. This is normal behavior for a young pup, but not one we want to continue. If we do not train the puppy, in the beginning, it will stay wild and even turn against us later on. Our passions are like puppies. Unfortunately, many of us in this world have grown up without properly training our passions. In this context, Sree Sree Thakur Anukulchandra blesses us by His divine message as, "Almost all the miseries men have in the world come from the addiction to ‘Kamini-Kanchan' (women and gold). It is better to remain as far away as possible from these two. He who only wails, "My passion and pride do not go, do not go", will find they never go. One should become habituated to those activities and thoughts, which have no scent of pride and passion; then the mind forgets them. If thoughts of
passion and pride do not arise in the mind, how can they show up? The way out is to remain always absorbed in higher thoughts and activities." Sri Sri Thakur Anukulchnadra further says in another message as, "Whenever you are not able to discard your passionate habits/activities which are against your dream achievement,-- it is to be concluded that your desire to achieve the same is not real". It is very much true in our lives. We dream to achieve many things in life but most of the times we do not bother to control our lifestyle so that nothing should go against that dream objective. Hence, throughout the life, although several good ideas come to our mind, we often are not able to materialize them in action. Everyday so many good ideas appear in our mind, but we are never able to materialize most of them in life and we always postpone good activities. Hence, if we want to achieve something, we must coordinate our whole lifestyle accordingly so that none of my activities (passionate act) should ever hinder the desired goal. And as usual, we must be attached with the living ideal and embodiment of divine ‘Love' and should surrender to Him and follow Him uncompromisingly to achieve our desired goal in a perfect and idealistic way. Once a great poet of Bengal came to Sree Sree Thakur Anukulchandra and was very much interested in performing 'sadhna' (Avowed Activity) under the guidance of Sri Sri Thakur. However, he wanted to know, what he was in his previous birth. He repeatedly asked this question to Sri Sri Thakur but Sri Sri Thakur always used to avoid replying the same. In this perspective, once he planned to leave the Satsang Ashram and told Sri Sri Thakur that when He was not able to say this much then
Page 24 of 100
he had no faith & confidence on Him to accept HIM as a ‘Guru' (Spiritual Master). On that context, Sri Sri Thakur asked him to stop for a while and started telling various negative things about his present life. Sri Sri Thakur had justified that if He would reveal some of that poet's present life incidences, then he at least can recall verifying. Then that poet felt ashamed and asked Sri Sri Thakur not to reveal anything more. Then Sri Sri Thakur told him that in his last birth, he was a so called monk and tried to do ‘sadhna' by abnormally suppressing the passions, and hence he had inherited a lot of negative attributes in his character in this birth. However, if he would follow and proceed according to Sri Sri Thakur's guidance of ‘Jajan, Jaajan Ishtabhrity', then he would be successful to adjust his complexes and would be able to progress in any endeavor. And that is the realistic path of ‘Jibanmukti' (Free from the sins of life)". When we first begin to tame our passions, we may experience inner irritation. As if we wrestle with them, we will find that there is a block in the mind. In relevance to this, during a conversation, Sri Sri Thakur says, "When our passions, instincts are utilized for ‘Ishtaswarthpratishtha' (To fulfill the interest of ideal/God), then they are no more treated as ‘Passion'(s), rather they become our essential ‘friend'(s).To make & apply the passions & instincts for the interest of ‘Ishta' (GOD/Ideal) is referred as to become ‘Jibanmukta' (Free from the sins of life)". Sree Sree Thakur says, Even If a man is a thief, a cheater or a criminal, then also if he is concentric to the ideology (of the Ideal), he can overcome these any moment and change his situation instantly. But, he who is concentric to multiple ideologies, even if he would be a moralist, then also his future is grim. There would not be any constraint for a man with the kind of historical negative personality as ‘Ratnakar' or ‘Bilwamangal', who were able to change their lives abruptly by attaching themselves with a concentric love centre. But there is certainly an issue for the people who are hypocrites and who are not ideal centric. Sree Sree Thakur says, "When ‘Adherence' is imbibed, set up internally, then inner being itself gets
equipped accordingly. Whenever you will be able to understand what do you want and what to do in which situation, and then you will be able to understand for others also. ‘Satchalan' means the moving with continuity, i.e. the existential movement". We can not overturn our characteristics overnight, nor can we suppress them by some magic. However, if we love ‘Ishta' ( The Almighty, the living ideal ), and be always concentric accordingly along with chanting the ‘Name', Meditation, Jajan & Jaajan, then our character is controlled in a positive manner over the period of time and the same may appear as a miraculous transformation. Now the million dollar question is that how we can initiate to train ourselves. In relevance to that, Sri Sri Thakur says ,"You should see how to fulfill the ideal. Through that objective, even if you may solve one problem, then you will observe that you are able to control many problems. Many problems will be simple if your prime objective is to proceed with ‘Ishtaswarthpratishtha' (To fulfill the interest of Ideal/God). This is my theory of the most ordinary man's concept. Problems are enrooted from a passionate lifestyle. And solutions are yielded from ‘Ishtarthi' and ‘Ishtanurag' (Interest to Ideal/God and Love to Ideal/God) lifestyle. If you proceed towards Him, everything will be under control". However, failure, an obstacle in any endeavor creates depression and we often fail to continue to maintain the ideological path perfectly. In such relevance, Sree Sree Thakur says, "There are ups and downs of the wave. And wave exists with these ups and downs. Depression can not affect if we maintain to proceed towards goal. ‘Depression' is yielded due to our unorganized/uncontrolled passions. We should not be led by that. To organize our passions in the interests of Ishta/Ideal is the only remedy of this….In this situation, we should analyze where is my fault to have happened (Had been depressed) that. And by finding out the faults, we should control them accordingly. Through such practice, we can become ‘Noble', ‘Experienced' and ‘Sublime'. Then all our
Page 25 of 100
instincts are organized and coordinated through one channel". In the conclusive part, I would like to refer the very saying of Sree Sree Thakur as He says during a conversation," We need Conviction. With all our passions, we need to be Ishtaswarthapratishthpanna (Whose only interest to fulfill the wish of Ideal). If someone becomes ‘Ishtaswarthapratishthapanna', .i.e., if his libidos are perfectly set in ‘Ishta', then all the obstacles are appeared as just like nothing to him. By continuing to fulfill the wish of ‘Ishta', to comply the instruction of ‘Ishta', we gain the energy and confidence to drive the people. Name, fame, wealth are bound to surge there. Such people are called ‘Ishwarkoti purush'.They possess uncompromising determination. They have an attitude of ‘Commitment', that they must do it. And to achieve means to love and to continue to be in good of Him (Ishta). For example, in ‘Ramayana', we witness that Hanuman had been sitting on a mountain of Cape Comorin and planning how to rescue the divine mother Janaki. Finally, he jumped and by a single jump, he crossed the sea to rescue the divine mother. When even Lord Ramchandra was ready to forgive Ravan, Hanuman would not. It is only through unconditional and unwavering ‘love' towards His Lord, such type of conviction develops. Conviction is the touchstone. We are blessed to have Sri Sri Thakur's guidance. Sri Sri Thakur has taught us that if ‘Dharma' is there, then ‘Arth', ‘Kam' and ‘Moksh' too will follow the suite.'Dharma' is the prime and pioneer of life. ‘Dharma' brings meaningful adjustment of all factors of life. So, if ‘Dharma' flares up then economic adjustment becomes normal. Because, it is through the adjustment of complexes only, by which our ‘activities' are adjusted. And it is ‘Adjusted activities' only, which create wealth. Wealth is nothing but the accumulated result of need fulfilling effort. I would like to quote the divine inspirational message of Sree Sree Thakur as,
tenors Is the only way to achieve Love, Energy, and perfect Skill." Let us swear that we will propagate the gospel of 'Love' and the very vision of the Almighty Sree Sree Thakur Anukulchandra & Satsang so that it is materialized across the globe bringing peace, happiness & success in every existence in this universe.

Rev. Babai dada – A devotee, an inspiration, a ray of hope! Debasis Mandal MA (Linguistics) Student Bhubaneswar Odisha Reverend Babai dada( Reverend Arkadyuti Chakraborty, Administrator of Satsang) is the great grand son of Sri Sri Thakur Anukulchandra( the Founder of Satsang. Many people who visit the Satsang Ashram( Deoghar) everyday to have the "darshan" of Sri Sri Thakur, Sri Sri Boroma, Sri Sri Borda, and Sri Sri Dada( the present Acharyadev and the spiritual head of Satsang) do also approach Him and share their problems to get some instructions hoping for lessening their miseries. The empirical directions of what they get from Him always elevate them in all respects. In fact, He asks them to be amenable to Sri Sri Thakur and entrust that this is the ultimate way of solving the intricacies they are in. Many a times, with some necessary arrangements through concerned Gurubhai, He also tries to assure the people in case the work need to have immediate attention and is on the state of urgency. This happens everyday and the people, after having His convincing words , get inspired, exalted and become more venerated in following the footsteps of the Supreme Beloved. But, after all, He identifies Himself as a common man. He says, "" I m a common man. I am not the Almighty God. I sit here and speak to you wishing that this could sow some seeds of
inspirations within you in obeying the instructions of the Supreme Father. His instructions to deal with adverse situations are innumerable and stories in connection with this teach us many things. About an incident, He goes on saying, "" while staying in Kolkata, one day, one of the friends of my friend came to meet me. He told me that he is in a trouble for his son. In fact, some days back, his son had a rift with some boys of the locality. There after the problem solved mutually. Two three--months later, after the incident, with whoever had the rift came to invite my son to go for cinema and they wanted to have fun with one another. Taking this as an advantage, the conspirators mixed poison with soft drinks and thus my son is in severe condition now. He is almost in the state of coma. Doctors are unable to provide any accurate information. By saying this, the gentleman broke down. Then I asked the person, "Does your son offer Istabhruti regularly?” "Yes, he does Istabhruti and Swostayoni everyday", said the person. Again I asked, “Is he able to offer Istabhruti in this state?". The man replied, "" His mother did it by having the “Arghya" in his hand"". “Then, you go home; go to the Page 31 of 100
Nursing home and do pray to Sri Sri Thakur about your son but don't beg for his life. Tell only that Thakur, as a father, whatever is possible for me, I have done. And the rest is dependent upon you. May your wishes only get fulfilled" I said. In afternoon, the gentleman phoned me that his son is well now. After getting up from the bed, he asked his mother to give food as he is hungry. Doctor didn't expect that the boy could recuperate but, by the grace of the Love Lord, the boy got a new life. Rev. Babai dada says that our prayer is granted by the Almighty if it is done properly. Prayer is of two kinds---one is to pray for oneself, and another is to pray for the sake of others and the Almighty God grants the second one only. Sri Sri Thakur says how to pray the Supreme Father: "Thy will is good. I don't know what will make me good. Let thy will be fulfilled in me"" To maintain communal Harmony among the workers of Sri Sri Thakur, Rev Babai da says, "" Sometimes, behavior of a worker does hurt the others and it makes them unhappy. Sometimes, some of them approaches me about it and I tell them that we should think and do the same of what Sri Sri Thakur would have done at that particular situation". Complicated situations in life are inevitable but they too are simplified, a new ray of hope and light are found by His grace. The path of Sadhana is eternal and so is our walk on this endless path of existence. The great soul
like Rev. Babai dada inspire us and fills us with a massive stream of energy which is generated only with the power of Love! On his 50th birthday, I pray to the Lotus feet of Sri Sri Thakur that may He grant our Rev. Babai dada a long and healthy life so that he may continue to guide lakhs of griefstricken souls on the existential path, as shown by Sri Sri Thakur.

THANKUNI SCIENTIFIC NAME- Centella asiatica (Hydrocotyle asiatica) FAMILY- Apiaceae or Umbelliferae (Commonly known as the celery, carrot or parsley family, important plants such as anise, asafoetida, carrot, celery, coriander, cumin, fennel, parsley, and parsnip) COMMON NAMES- Bhekaparni, Brahmamanduki,Darduchhada, Mahaushadhi,Mandukaprnika, Manduki, Mutthil, Supriya, Tvasthi (Sanskrit), Bemgsag, Brahma-Manduki, Gotukola, Khulakhudi, Mandookaparni (Hindi), Thankuni, Tholkuri (Bengal), Thalkudi(Oriya), Kodagam, Kodangal, Kutakm, Kutannal, Muthal, Muttil, Muyalchevi (Malayalam), Bekaparnamu, Bokkudu, Saraswataku, Mandukbrahmmi, Saraswati (Telugu), Barmi, Moti Brahmi (Gujarati), Indian penny wort (English). HABITAT- It is a perennial herb indigenous to India, Australia and Africa. It is predominant in the tropical and sub-tropical areas. This herb is most commonly found in the rice fields as weed. For planting in home just uproot it from field and plant it in the pot, uproot is such a way that the rhizome remains undisturbed. No special attention is required for it, just water it regularly as it loves wet-land. PARTS USED- The whole plant is used for medicinal purposes. Pluck it from the petiole leaving behind the stolon and roots and have it. It is also available in the form of tablets as Thankuni by Satsang Rasaishana Mandir (Satsang Chemical Works). MEDICINAL PROPERTIES- Centella asiatica contains a variety of chemical compounds such as asiaticoside, hersaponin, tannin, hydrocotylin, monnierin, bacogenin, monnierin, triterpene, steroids and vallarine which have various medicinal properties and thus the plant possesses stimulant, refrigerant, soporific, emmenagogue, stomachic, carminative, diuretic, adaptogen, antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcerogenic and anxiolytic properties. It has a wide range of benefits:According to the University of Maryland Medical School, or UMMC, it has been used historically to treat syphilis, hepatitis, stomach ulcers, epilepsy, diarrhea, fever and asthma. Phyllis Balch says in her book “Prescription for Nutritional Healing that it also stimulates the central nervous system and may work as a mild stimulant improving mental clarity, reducing mental fatigue and increasing energy.
Other potential uses include treating respiratory infections such as colds, reducing fluid retention, stimulating the appetite and supporting healthy heart and liver function, enhances the capacity of healing and is very useful in wound healing, effective in case of gastrointestinal problems, improves the circulation of blood in the veins and capillaries. It may also increase mental well being, by reducing depression and anxiety, and helping to prevent insomnia. However, most of these benefits are based on anecdotal evidence and not on scientific research.
TULSI SCIENTIFIC NAME: Ocimum tenuiflorum (Ocimum sanctum) FAMILY: Lamiaceae (is a family of flowering plants commonly known as the mint ordeadnettle family. Many of the plants are aromatic in all parts and include widely used culinary herbs, such as basil, mint, rosemary, sage, savory, marjoram, oregano, hyssop, thyme and lavender. Some species are shrubs, trees (such as teak), or, rarely, vines. Many members of the family are widely cultivated, not only for their aromatic qualities but also their ease of cultivation, since they are readily propagated by stem cuttings.Besides those grown for their edible leaves, some are grown for decorative foliage, such as Coleus) The two main morphotypes cultivated in India and Nepal is green-leaved (Rama or Sri or Lakshmi tulsi) and purple-leaved (Krishna tulsi). HABITAT: Basils are native to tropical Asia, likely having originated in India. Robust Tulsi varieties readily grow wild in many areas of Asia and Africa. Tulsi is a bushy perennial shrub, usually cultivated annually from seed, although it can also be propagated from tip or root cuttings. It is usually planted (or transplanted) immediately after the rainy season ends. In good soil and hot sunny weather, Tulsi may grow to a meter or more in height and be ready for harvest in a few months. Much larger specimens have been noted and under special circumstances an individual plant may live for a decade or more. POTTING: Place the tulsi seeds on top of the soil and tamp them for good soil to seed contact, cover the seeds with 1/4 inch layer of compost or soil. Water the seeds with sprayer and place them where they receive part morning sun. Keep the soil constantly moist until the germination, which will take around 1-2 weeks. PARTS USED- leaves of Tulsi are most commonly used for their health benefits, although all parts of the plant, including the roots, stems, flowers and seeds, have significant and differing medicinal properties.
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES: Tulsi is well known for its myriad medicinal properties — antibacterial, antifungal, antipyretic, antioxidant, antiseptic and anticancer. Of the nearly 40 secondary metabolites that have medicinal value, the genes and enzymes responsible for the production of 14 metabolites have been mapped on the genome. Not much information on the pathway is available for the remaining metabolites. Of the 14 metabolites that have been mapped, eight have anti-cancer properties and the remaining six have antifungal,
Page 37 of 100
antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and cardio protective properties. The results were published recently in the journal BMC Plant Biology. Rama (green leaves) and Krishna (purple leaves) — have been found to contain very high concentration of these medicinally important metabolites. Between the two domesticated subtypes, the Rama subtype contains “high abundance” of medicinally important metabolites. “The concentration of eugenol (anti-infective) and ursolic acid (anticancer) in both leaf and stem was more in Rama than Krishna subtype. From regular fever to some of the deadliest and most fatal bacterial and viral infections – tulsi can help cure or to some extent, facilitate treating most diseases. Dr. Simran Saini from New Delhi suggests consuming a drink made by boiling tulsi leaves and adding about 2grams of black pepper to it. This drink helps in building your immunity, acts as an antibacterial element and facilitates recovery from dengue. The quintessential kadha – a mix of ginger, tulsi leaves, peppercorn (crushed) in boiling hot water - is usually seen as a potion that can put most illnesses straight. Apart from these there is a bundle of other beneficial properties that this humble plant boasts of, take a look – 1. It acts as a detoxifying, cleansing and purifying agent – both from within and without. 2. Therefore it is good for skin – both when consumed and applied topically. 3. It is also effective in treating skin disorders, itching and issues like ringworms. 4. It can be made into teas or can be had raw, powdered, paste or in form herbal supplements. 5. It has antibiotic, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-carcinogenic properties. 6. It helps in relieving from fever, headache, sore throat, cold, cough, flu and chest congestion. 7. It is also beneficial in treating respiratory ailments like chronic
bronchitis, asthma etc.
8. Helps relieve stress, strengthen immunity, and facilitate proper digestion. 9. It is loaded with phytonutrients, essential oils, Vitamin A and C 10. Regular tulsi consumption can also aid in balancing various bodily processes. 11. It counters elevated blood sugar levels and is therefore beneficial for diabetics. 12. It helps in regulating uric acid levels in body, thereby elimination risks of developing kidney stones. It is also beneficial for those who have kidney stones. 13. According to the Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, India, tulsi can help in maintaining normal levels of the stress hormone – cortisol in the body. 14, It can wards off harmful effects of free radicals.
15. Is great for dental health and for healthy gums. 16. Is an effective insect repellant and can aid in treating insect bite. 17. Is also beneficial in treating conditions like hepatitis, malaria, tuberculosis, dengue and swine flu.

Yoga Mudras Swarashtra Srivastava BSc (Zoology), MA (English) Varanasi Entirely distinct and based on the principle of Ayurveda, yoga mudras are understood as a healing modality. The Sanskrit word mudra is translated as a gesture. A mudra may involve the whole body or could be a simple hand position. Mudras used in combination with yoga breathing exercises enliven the flow of prana in the body, thereby energizing different parts of the body. The Five Elements and the Mudra Therapy:The universe is made of five elements, and each of the five fingers is represented by one of these elements. Thumb – The fire (Agni) Index finger – The air (Vayu) Middle finger – The ether (Aakasha) Ring finger – The earth (Prithvi) Small finger – The water (Jala) When these five elements are not in balance, we can experience disease in the body. Our fingers have the characteristics of these elements and each of these five elements serves a specific and important function within the body. The fingers are essentially electrical circuits. The use of mudras adjusts the flow of energy - affecting the balance of air, fire, water, earth, ether - and facilitate healing. Mudras create a subtle connection with the instinctual patterns in the brain and influence the unconscious reflexes in these areas. The internal energy is, in turn, balanced and redirected, affecting change in the sensory organs, glands, veins and tendons. Types of Mudras:The 10 important Hand Mudras are explained below: 1.

Page 83 of 100
