Initspresentstate,thefieldofanimationistheproductofsuchanextremedegreeoftechnologicalevolutionthatits rootsindrawinghavebecomeallbutimperceptible.Bycontrast,theartistsassembledinAnalogAnimattonuselowleveltechnologytoexploitanimation'sorigininthemedium;oftenworkingwithc0nceptstakenfromunexpected s0urces,theyareinspirednotbycrudeLudditezealotrybutbythedesiretofindeleganceinsimplicityofmeans.

Someoftheartistscreatetheirmovingimagesinwaysthatfalloutsidetheparametersoftraditionalanimation,skippingtheproductionofcells.MarkFoxinsertsminiaturedrawingsinspiderwebs,whichinturnareanimatedbythe spiderswhodwellthereattemptingtocleanuptheirintrudedhome.In0scarMufroz'sRe/trato(aplayontheSpanish wordsfor"portrait"andfor"tryingagain"),itistheartistwhoistheanimator,continuallyredrawinganevaporating facerenderedwithwateronahotstone.Inasimilarvein,HeatherBoazusessublimatingink,whichquicklybecomes invisibleafterdrying,tocapturethemovemento1aflame.InLizaMcConnell'sinstallation,itistheviewerwhomakes thingshappen,activatingamovingroadbywalkingonatreadmill.AnnaKiralyusesmotorstointroducemovement intothedrawingsshemakesonrolledupwindowshades.MagdalenaFerndndezhasbasicgeometricshapesthatcontinuallychangethroughripplingwater.DeborahDavidovitsrevivestraditionalshadowpuppetryusingnostalgic Americanimagery.

Closertoconventionalanimation,DavidVirgienreinventsthemediumbypaintingthesameimageseveraltimes,seekingtoachieveaperfecthand-madereproduction.ltisthedifferencebetweentheversions-hisfailuretorealizehis goal-thatgeneratesmovementwhentheworksareusedasanimationcells.InJohnDooley'swork,thecellsconsist ofdailyweathermapsfromtheNewYorkTimes.

Otherartistsdeploythetechniquesofamoretraditionalformofanimation,butdosofocusingontheactofdrawing withoutspecialeffects.BrettBuddedrownsapaintedglassinitsownpaint,AlmutDetermeyermeditatesondeathas anun-creator,ShinilKimworkswiththeincisionofaninklesspentodefineimagesbytheirabsence,Hans0pde Beeckpondersthesolitudeofarchitecture,KakyoungLeerevisitstheboredomofeverydaylife,LindaPellapresents anewtakeonbotanicalrenderingwithherpresentationofthegrowthofplants,andJennilerMacdonaldfindsa metaphorforlying.WhilekeepingthetraditionalJormatofprojection,allrefreshthelanguageofanimationwiththeir particularwaysofdrawing.

Serge0nnenandEunjungHwanggobeyondthescreentotakeoverthesurroundingspaceas issimplybyusingwallpaperasares0nancebox.InHwang'sinstallation,multiplescreensand animatethewholesoace.

Nomatterwheretheartistsareplacedinthiswiderangeofapproaches,theyallseemableto boardofanimation,instillingunexpectedbutmuchneededfreshnessandverve.
