Closertoconventionalanimation,DavidVirgienreinventsthemediumbypaintingthesameimageseveraltimes,seekingtoachieveaperfecthand-madereproduction.ltisthedifferencebetweentheversions-hisfailuretorealizehis goal-thatgeneratesmovementwhentheworksareusedasanimationcells.InJohnDooley'swork,thecellsconsist ofdailyweathermapsfromtheNewYorkTimes.
Otherartistsdeploythetechniquesofamoretraditionalformofanimation,butdosofocusingontheactofdrawing withoutspecialeffects.BrettBuddedrownsapaintedglassinitsownpaint,AlmutDetermeyermeditatesondeathas anun-creator,ShinilKimworkswiththeincisionofaninklesspentodefineimagesbytheirabsence,Hans0pde Beeckpondersthesolitudeofarchitecture,KakyoungLeerevisitstheboredomofeverydaylife,LindaPellapresents anewtakeonbotanicalrenderingwithherpresentationofthegrowthofplants,andJennilerMacdonaldfindsa metaphorforlying.WhilekeepingthetraditionalJormatofprojection,allrefreshthelanguageofanimationwiththeir particularwaysofdrawing.
