Issue #05
WELCOME TO DRAW Welcome to this, our fifth edition of DRAW, and the first to adopt our new bi-monthly format. This will enable us to bring you more relevant events information, more regional features and, importantly, dedicated space in each issue for the various RIBA committees and branches operating in the region to tell you about the work they are doing and encourage you to get involved. We are very pleased that this revised format is being kicked off by the new RIBA Chief Executive, Alan Vallance, writing about what he has been doing in his first 100 days in office. It is encouraging that in that short time, Alan has been a regular visitor to the region and has taken the time to talk with and listen to members locally. He is quickly developing a sense of what the RIBA is doing well and what members would like it to do better. He is quick to acknowledge where things need to improve, which is welcome. He has also been very supportive of the excellent work being done in the North West region in several areas; it is great for the region that this is being recognised at a national level. Amongst the winners at the recent RIBA North West Awards were Mellor Primary School by Sarah Wigglesworth Architects and Wirral Metropolitan College by Glenn Howells Architects. Sadly, delivering well designed schools like these has become increasingly difficult in recent years due to funding constraints, ill-considered briefing and cumbersome procurement processes. So another positive development recently has been the RIBA’s # topmarksschools report which has featured prominently in the mainstream media as well as the architectural press. More of this kind of hard hitting campaigning backed up by thorough research - and making a strong stand for both architects and architecture - is what we need more of. As ever, if you have any comments or suggestions for the DRAW team, please do get in touch. x Darren Jones, Editor.

WIRRAL MET COLLEGE INT E R V I E W DRAW / Firstly, many congratulations on your recent awards! Your beauty and various features have been detailed nicely by your creators Glenn Howells and Peel Developments! WMC / Thank you! Yes, I am quite the academic dish! It has been said that I am in essence ‘an essay in construction’. They wanted me to teach students about construction techniques and show how an educational building can provide a catalyst for the Wirral Waters regeneration! An exemplar scheme within Peel’s Ocean Gateway regeneration strategy to be precise. DRAW / How would you describe what you look like? WMC / I have a strong polished block bottom with a light grey sheen/ slightly rippled body! With regular pointy peaks and quiffs up top, that lets air flow through my body!
‘‘I have a strong polished
DRAW / What gets you up in the morning and how much maintenance do you require to keep such a striking body running to optimum effect!
block bottom with a light grey
WMC / It doesn’t take much to turn me on! A hairy man flicks a switch and that’s enough to get me going! By lunch I am in full flow hosting many students and lots of academics wearing bow ties! Of an evening I like a relaxed glass of fresh Birkenhead air overlooking the Wirral Waters!
sheen/slightly rippled body! With regular pointy peaks and quiffs up top, that lets air flow through my body!’’
DRAW / So what is in stall for Wirral Waters in the future? WMC / I believe I shall be getting a few friends (‘Building Friends!’) soon! With creation of 20,000 permanent new jobs, where wide open spaces meet world-class culture and global companies trade alongside new waterfront housing. So my neighbourhood is going to expand!

O N THE SKYLINE ‘hoUSe’ introduces 43 of shedkm’s innovative factory-built terrace houses to New Islington, Manchester. hoUSe is a new housing concept for Urban Splash, directly challenging the established typologies of the major housebuilders. It exploits modular planning to create spacious, flexible and modern customer-designed homes. Purchasers choose two or three storey houses with loft- or garden-level living spaces. A series of layouts can be selected which tailor one to five bedroom homes with different kitchen and bathroom configurations. For all options, space standards are generous, windows large and sustainability credentials high. Houses are custom built to order in SIG’s Nottingham factory and delivered to site fully finished. More hoUSe developments are planned around the country, the next being in Salford and Tyneside. Photograph (right) by Jack Hobhouse.
NEW FACES
NORTHERN SOUL
At GA Studio we strive to bring quality design to all of our projects, irrespective of budget or location. It is fair to say that not all projects are deemed “suitable” for an award but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a success, what drives us most is the happiness of our clients. We are immensely proud to pick up the RIBA North West Emerging Architect Award this year and we see it as recognition for the hard work the team have put in. We have some exciting projects in the pipeline that we hope to showcase in the coming months and years.
RIBA’s ‘Northern Soul’, the collaborative design charrette for students of northern schools of architecture, came to Liverpool in April for an event jointly hosted by the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University. A challenging brief focusing on Anfield Cemetery encouraged the 70 students to respond to the challenges faced by the regeneration of a huge piece of land and associated buildings. Following a site visit, a vibrant session at Constellations resulted in a winning scheme which sought to seamlessly link the cemetery to the surrounding residential, cultural and sporting environments. Huge thanks to the participants and to Dominic Wilkinson, Sandy Britton and Aliki-Myrto Perysinaki for setting the brief. This was the 4th Northern Soul, following events in Manchester, Northumbria and Preston. In 2017 the charrette moves to Yorkshire!

T OP 5 DRAW’s Top 5 UK Zaha Hadid buildings
1. London Aquatics Centre - Designed of course for the 2012 Olympics, whilst it had to go through an ‘ugly duckling phase’, the centre is now stripped of its temporary additional seating and returned to its originally anticipated beautiful fluid form 2. Glasgow Riverside Museum - A purpose built museum for the city’s transport collection, with 3000+ objects. Notable for the clarity of concept translated through to built work even by Zaha’s standards! 3. The Serpentine Sackler Gallery - A gallery that consists of two distinct parts, namely the conversion of a classical 19th century brick structure and a 21st century tensile structure.

4. Evelyn Grace Academy, London - A state of art, diverse and active school design. Following the principal of ‘schools within schools’, the design generates natural patterns of division within highly functional spaces. 5. Maggie’s Centre at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy - Domestic in scale but unique in execution, Maggie’s Centre Fife is set on the edge of a hollow adjacent to Victoria Hospital.

SKETCHES
MANCHESTER ARCHITECTS - Last year we marked 150 years by celebrating the past, present and future of the society through a very successful events programme. Now we are building on that success with even more events designed to educate, celebrate and inspire. The MA Awards in July includes an exhibition, culminating in an awards evening celebrating the work of Manchester’s architects. Our lecture series continues with MAKE, Design Engine, Stephen Hodder and others. This year we are increasing collaboration with other regional societies; in May we started our new CRAFTworks series in collaboration with the IHBC, providing an opportunity for handson experience of a variety of heritage craft skills. Manchester Curious will run again this year in October. For more information register at www.the-msa.co.uk or follow us on Twitter @The_MSA LAWSA - LAWSA is planning site visits, a garden party and a public lecture this year - details in our next newsletter. All are welcome to LAWSA Design Events, our monthly CPD at The Mintworks, Kendal, on the last Wednesday of each month. We have established a great relationship with Lake District National Park Authority Planning and together run a series of talks, ‘Imagine:Inspire:Involve’ with the aim of raising the profile of architecture in the region. LAWSA architects are the speakers and LDNPA provide an excellent venue, plus essential tea and cake! In February the subject was Conservation and we had a full house of more than 70 people. In May nearly 60 people came to hear two LAWSA architects talk about their approach to house design. RIBA UPDATE As interim Chief Executive of the RIBA I’m delighted to have been asked to write a few words for DRAW. I am always genuinely interested in what’s happening in the North West, having been born and bred on the Wirral. Any chance to re-engage with the place where I grew up is always eagerly snapped up! I’ve spent my first few months as Chief Executive shaping up the new RIBA Strategy 2016-2020 with our President, Jane Duncan. We will be releasing that plan shortly, but the team are already in delivery mode. I want to see the organisation becoming more member-focused and providing much greater value to our members over the coming years. Indeed, enhancing the value of our offer to members is the priority in our new strategy. I’m still less than 100 working days in to the role and I’ve spent that initial period gathering lots of information and speaking with many people about the RIBA. It’s a great organisation and whilst it’s not without its challenges there are lots of fantastic things going on. So my job is really to take the best of the past into a brave new world. We need to be more focused, more joined up and more engaged with our members - you! Our big local news is the impending opening of the new RIBA North facility at Mann Island on the waterfront in Liverpool. In addition to being home to our North-West Region and Commercial teams it will be a vibrant centre for members and the public and will house an exhibition space, gallery, design studio conference centre, café and retail outlet. The official launch will be in July/August and the teams are busy gearing up for it. I’m always keen to hear any feedback that you may have about the RIBA, the good and the ‘not-so-good’. If I don’t know what’s not working then I can’t fix it. So if you’d like to share any views please drop me an email at alan.vallance@riba.org x Submitted by Alan Vallance
