WELCOME TO DRAW

North West

Events

Welcome to this, our sixth edition of DRAW. We are very excited that the new RIBA North centre in Liverpool features prominently in this issue, in celebration of the imminent opening of these world-class facilities. It’s been a long time coming, but we are finally close to having a national architecture centre in the region, and indeed the only national RIBA centre outside of London. We hope that it will become a real focus for architectural debate within the profession, amongst our built environment colleagues and, of course, increased engagement with the wider public. This is a real vote of confidence in the region and reinforces the position of RIBA North West as being one of the most active, innovative and member-focused of the RIBA’s regional offices. For this we extend our gratitude to Andrew Ruffler and his team who continue to work hard to ensure our regional voice is heard in Portland Place. Meanwhile, we at DRAW urge all those eligible to vote in the RIBA Council and Presidential elections to do so before voting closes on 8th August. Two years ago turn out was pretty dismal. A good turn out is vital to give those elected a strong mandate, but it is also our best chance to ensure that we have a President and Council members who will represent the interests of our region. Back in June, DRAW attended the Presidential hustings in Liverpool in June to hear the candidates’ plans first hand. Finally, we would like to encourage all practices in the region to consider getting involved in the excellent RIBA North West student mentoring scheme. All those involved last year found it hugely rewarding. Contact RIBA NW for further details. As ever, if you have any comments or suggestions for the DRAW team, please do get in touch. x Darren Jones, Editor.

RIBA NORTH INTERVI E W DRAW / Well isn’t this nice, a dedicated centre for architecture based in the North, but who are you? RN / I am the sister building - a ‘twin’ if you like - to 66 Portland Place, the home of the RIBA. I’m called RIBA North and will share much in common with my sibling, including hosting world class architectural exhibitions and providing excellent event spaces. DRAW / Not long left until the launch, I bet you can’t wait? RN / Inevitably nerves are starting to build, but that’s mostly excitement. Thanks to my creators at Broadway Malyan’s Liverpool studio, I have some striking features that will delight visitors. I’m looking forward to showing off my interior which will be brimming with drawings & models. I don’t half treat you architects!

‘‘I am the sister building - a ‘twin’ if you like to 66 Portland Place, the home of the RIBA. I’m called RIBA North...’’

DRAW / Speaking of features, what would you define as your best? RN / Well, like most gallery spaces you can take your pick. The first thing is a 6m high red totem. This forms a visual continuation of a red spine wall within the centre made entirely from Corian. There is a clever interplay between this and a granite processional staircase with each tread and riser shaped from a single piece of granite. The craftsmanship exhibited in my materials is something of a rarity now-a-days, so I am sure you will be impressed. DRAW / So how did you find yourself in Liverpool? RN / As a city rich in architectural history with scores of museums and galleries it seemed to be a logical place to find myself here in Mann Island alongside the Three Graces on Liverpool’s waterfront. I’ll be accessible to the architectural schools in the region and outreach across the entire North of England. I look forward to seeing you when you come and visit! x Submitted by Martyn Jones. O N THE SKYLINE London-based architects ACME have submitted a planning application for the long-awaited Northgate Quarter redevelopment in Chester city centre. The £300million, 5.6ha retail-led scheme has been developed directly for the city council which has acquired 85% of the site following the stalling of a number of earlier schemes by various developers. The masterplan - extensively re-worked since the 2013 competition-winning scheme - introduces a number of new routes through the site, connecting into the historic grain the city centre, and includes a new market hall and public square. New buildings reference Chester’s historic buildings with a variety of textures and roof forms. x CGI (right) by ACME. >>>

N EW FACES Setting up your own practice can be daunting, especially in an uncertain economic climate. One solution is Pride Road - a unique architectural franchise operating exclusively in the domestic residential market. It offers a ready business model for architects who would like to work for themselves and earn a stable income, but have no experience in running their own company. It provides training and support in all areas, and a fulfilling career without compromising family time. I set up Pride Road after 19 years of working as an architect and running my own practice. Following successful launches in Manchester and Liverpool, the company is now looking for new franchisees willing to take over new territories. x Submitted by Lisa Raynes.

RIBA NORTH RIBA North has been a regular item on the agenda of Regional Council for many years now. After a huge amount of hard work, the inspirational new exhibition space and supporting facilities will open soon. We will have a national centre to promote architectural excellence and debate at the heart of our region. The programme of exhibitions will attract many visitors to Liverpool and will focus on the RIBA’s commitment to encourage active involvement in design and our built environment by a wide audience. Importantly for the region, RIBA North will also offer additional support for RIBA members as our Regional team moves to a new base there. There will be opportunities to use the cafe and meeting spaces for events, as well as the exciting prospect of inviting others to join and collaborate in a hub that can become a focus for the work we do. x Submitted by Mick Goode, RIBA NW Regional Chair.

C O M M I T T E E U P D A TE - PRACTICE

TOP 5

As part of the ‘Northern Powerhouse’, we have been discussing how practices can get more involved and actually benefit from this political drive. This has led to the development of a piece of research with the think tank IPPR, the results of which should be available later this year. I’d imagine the recent referendum vote and forthcoming BREXIT will also be a subject of much debate within the committee and we will be encouraging feedback through the Committee to Portland Place. We have also been exploring:

Pozzoni choose their top 5 forms of exercise for architects:

x Cross-profession collaboration within the construction industry, which will be resulting in a number of joint events over the coming months and years;

x Opportunities for the RIBA to take a significant role in industry and lead on discussions and new ideas, such as improvements to the planning process and digital/smart cites; x Promotion of the “value of using an architect”, the RIBA ‘Stage 0’ agenda, and use the knowledge available at Schools of Architecture within the North West; x Better local authority and client engagement, using some of the RIBA’s policy agendas and reports such as Homewise, Procurement and Better Spaces for Learning. We are currently looking to create a more diverse Practice Committee to represent the views, opinions, concerns and issues of practices right across the region and we would welcome new additions to the group. Please contact me if you are interested in getting involved and contributing to the discussions.

1. Cycling - Often a form of transportation for commuting (or even getting to MIPIM)! But there is always the issue around preparation with riding to work - don’t forget a suitable change of clothes.

RIBA NW Part 3 Course at Chester on the part 2 residential. From 5-a-side on a weekday to 11-a-side of a weekend, football offers social/team building opportunities.

3. Running - Whether you stick your Nikes on for a jog around the park, or you are into Asics for Marathon running… Running is becoming ever more popular and can also be quite addictive... so we’re told.

4. Swimming - A great way to start a fresh day and cool down over the summer months!

5. Boxing - White collar boxing is becoming more popular! A great way to take out procurement frustrations, or maybe simply as a means to get fit & develop your self-defence! x Submitted by Anna Meredith.
