Issue #02
WELCOME TO DRAW Hello. Welcome to this our 4th issue of DRAW, the publication for architects in the North West. This issue represents something of a milestone for the DRAW team and completes our first year of publications. It has taken a lot of effort from many people to get where we are, for which we are very grateful. However, we have some even more ambitious plans for the next year. These include a step up from quarterly to bimonthly publications and more content, including regular features on RIBA branches across the region and the workings of the various RIBA Committees and Council in the North West. We hope this will put more of you in touch with the architectural scene in your local area and serve to highlight some of the excellent - and often unsung - work being done by members in the region. In this issue we take a look at the RIBA NW student mentoring scheme which is this year operating in Manchester, Liverpool and Lancashire, connecting over 190 students with North West practices. We’ve spoken to a cross section of both mentors and mentees, all of whom were extremely positive about the benefits the scheme is bringing. If your practice isn’t taking part this year, we’d urge you to think about it next time. We are also looking forward to the RIBA Awards, with the welcome news that this year attracted a record number of entries in the North West, and with more buildings shortlisted too. The regional winners will be announced at a ceremony at The Bluecoat in Liverpool on 20th April. We hope to see you there to celebrate architectural excellence in the region. In the meantime, if you have any comments or suggestions for the DRAW team, please get in touch via hello@drawonline.co.uk or tweet us at @drawonline

GRANBY WORKSHOP INTE R V I E W DRAW / Can I start off with a warm congratulations on your recent Turner Prize victory. Not only are you the first building to have won the prize, but you’re grounded right here in Liverpool! GW / Who’d have thought it ey? A scouser terrace like me becoming an award winning piece of art… after years of being shunned and ignored it’s weird to be in the spotlight. Of course, none of this would have happened without my good friends in the neighbourhood and at Assemble. They worked tirelessly to bring out the inner beauty even I had forgotten about. Ultimately though it’s the community here who are the real winners, regardless of some art prize. DRAW / If I understand correctly this is still an on-going project and you’re still being made into art?
‘‘Sometimes it’s best to ignore these labels and roll your sleeves up instead... in the end people will always notice good old fashioned hard work!’’
GW / Yeah, that’s right. Local artists are using my old materials to create new furniture and art pieces. You should see the stuff they make; fireplaces, chairs, prints and lots and lots of ceramic handles. Then they sell it at monthly markets and online to cover costs and my own renovations. If this is life as a piece of art then let me tell you, I could get used to this! DRAW / If we were to go back even before your recent foray into the art world I understand you’ve had quite an eventful life? GW / Well yes, I was built over 100 years ago and I’ve seen all sorts. I started off housing artisan workers and I’ve stood firm as Ringo Starr, riots and mass demolitions have torn through the surrounding area. The next 100 years are looking better already! DRAW / What optimism! Any idea what’s next now that you’ve taken the art and architecture worlds by storm? GW / I’m not going anywhere, there’s still plenty of work to be done right here! Sometimes it’s best to ignore these labels and roll your sleeves up instead. Things might get tough, but in the end people will always notice good old fashioned hard work!
O N THE SKYLINE Sheppard Robson and Styles & Wood have completed a 69week refurbishment programme at the 150,000sqft Lancaster University library - shown right. DRAW’s very own Michael Swiszczowski was the project architect for the scheme, which took 3 years from inception through to completion. The project saw the creation of flexible individual and group workspaces, the installation of new fixtures and furnishings, as well as reconfigured stairs and lifts. A live Ficus tree has been installed as a focal point inside the newly-created atrium study space. The existing library, situated on Alexandra Square, comprises the original library building constructed in 1967 and an extension added in 1997. The refurbishment has connected the two buildings, with the majority of the remodelling focused on the original library building. Mark Swindlehurst, Director of Facilities at Lancaster University, said: “Lancaster University now enjoys a resource that reinforces and reflects the University’s reputation as a world-class centre for teaching and research. “The re-modelled library offers a flexible, inspiring, technologyenabled environment with a range of individual and group work spaces to support different learning styles.” The scheme was designed with sustainability in mind and the completed library, which is often used by more than 40,000 students a week, is on track to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.
RIBA NW STUDENT MENTORI N G S C H E M E ‘‘Experiences and thoughts shared with me have helped me jump the hurdles in my own studio projects.’’ - Asim Hanif (Mentee) ‘‘I see the value of the RIBA Student Mentoring initiative being that in addition to students being given an insight into the everyday working practice that they are made aware of the processes they may not have exposure to at university such as planning context, production information, the wider construction team and on-site experience.’’ - Peter Sproule (Mentor)
