Issue #02
WELCOME TO DRAW Hello. Welcome to the second issue of DRAW, the publication for architects in the North West. If you enjoyed our first issue, then welcome back - you will recognise the format and features, although you will notice a few tweaks as we respond to comments from our readers. We’re still new to this and appreciate your feedback as we try to improve communication with and between RIBA members. If you have a drawing or article you’d like to share, please send it to us at hello@drawonline.co.uk or tweet us at @ drawonline This is an exciting time for both architects and architecture in the North West. For the second year running we have a strong contender on the Stirling Prize shortlist - this year the stunning Whitworth in Manchester (featured in our first issue). Hopefully before too long we will be celebrating a north west practice as well as a north west building in contention for this coveted award. Again this year RIBA North West is running its Great British Buildings visits to RIBA Award-winning buildings. Last year’s events were very successful and I would encourage members to sign up. Manchester’s arts scene has recently been transformed with the launch of HOME (more elsewhere in this issue) and we have had some fantastic end of year shows at regional schools of architecture showcasing some promising talent to look out for in the future. And the Love Architecture Festival is returning to the north west in September with events celebrating architecture and inspiring the public. It’s not too late to organise an event so if you have an idea get in touch with RIBA North West. Finally, on behalf of the DRAW team, I would like to extend congratulations to north west members who have been elected to sit on RIBA National Council: Mark Percival, Lisa Raynes, Ewen Miller and Richard Wooldridge.

HOME INTERVIEW DRAW / Upon meeting you for the first time, do people find your name misleading? HOME / I think ‘Home’ means different things to different people, for me it’s a reference to my accommodation of two of Manchester’s popular, long-serving institutions; Cornerhouseand the Library Theatre. For a new building, it’s intimidating to have to play ‘home’ to such well known characters, but I hope that the newly created bar will keep them entertained. DRAW / The way you are dressed up from the outside gives off a very different impression to what you are like on the inside, is there any reason for this?
‘‘For a new building, it’s intimidating to have to play ‘home’ to such well known characters, but I hope that the newly created bar will keep them entertained.’’
HOME / Well, to continue the ‘home’ analogy, “keeping up with the Joneses” is the main reason! Whilst my neighbours are also relatively young, they are rather ‘loud’ in their appearance, especially for a car park and a hotel. Therefore, in order to fit in, I felt like I needed a highly polished, slick exterior, which is why I have a tinted, continuous glass façade. However, I wanted to express the more ‘domestic’ traits of the interior spaces using the popular ‘exposed services’ and ‘industrial aesthetic’ application. DRAW / In July’s RIBA Journal, Phil Griffin compared you to a Ford C-Max. Although it may seem odd for an article to discuss a building like a car, if you had your say, what car would you be? HOME / I would like to think I am a Jaguar F-Type; a successor to a well-known classic (in this case the E-Type) and old enough to know better but with an appearance that is undeniably modern. The new model also manages to embody the spirit of the earlier series of its predecessors.

O N THE SKYLINE Liverpool’s Archbishop Blanch High School (shown below) will soon relocate into a new building on Smithdown Road, Wavertree. The project is the third school delivered using the Liverpool Schools Model developed by Sheppard Robson and Willmott Dixon. Two schools have already opened using this model - Notre Dame Catholic College in Everton (2013) and Archbishop Beck Catholic College in Walton (2014). The concept of the Liverpool Schools Model is that the building envelope is built as an efficient standardised form with flexible space and services, forming an adaptable internal environment. Within this shell the components required to form a school - including spaces, equipment, furniture have been assembled to create bespoke educational and pastoral spaces for Archbishop Blanch. Externally the brick clad façade and extensive landscaping relate carefully to the adjacent listed structures.
NEW FACES IN THE NORT H W E S T FCB Studios has opened a new Manchester office to support existing clients (MMU Students’ Union shown above, photo by Hufton+Crow) and to explore some new directions. We’ve really enjoyed our time in Manchester over the past 10 years and are very excited about emerging plans for the future of the city and look forward to being a part of the design community helping to deliver that vision. DMWR Architects has opened a new office in Spring Gardens, central Manchester, led by director Denise Giblin. The practice works across the sector spectrum, complemented with a strong BIM ability.

VICTORIA STATIO N
/
The £44m transformation of Manchester’s grade II-listed Victoria station continues with the installation of a new roof covering 10,000m2. The roof is made of 400 bespoke steel-framed ETFE panels, designed using advanced computer modelling techniques by architects BDP. The roof is a contemporary extension to the Victorian and Edwardian station buildings. The project began in 2013 and is due to complete later this year.
