Welcome to our 2016-2017 Guide! For this upcoming year we’ve developed and refined our program offerings to address trends we observed and feedback we received from students and universities: Success in the U.S. We continue to employ our 'Building Blocks' Approach to cultural decoding and skill development as the basis for our programs and workshops for international students. Student growth is achieved through an approach that is step-by-step, continuous and experiential.
U.S. JOB SEARCH SUCCESS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Complimentary Videos I'm so thrilled that students have given us high marks on our videos, giving them a rating of 4.1 on a scale of 5! Recognizing that many universities don’t have the resources to rent our videos and wanting to assist as many International students as possible, we have decided to offer free access to our videos this year!
How to Network Like an American
Advisor & Administrator Engagement As university demographics shift, advisors are seeking to add cultural knowledge and skills to their toolbox. Through on campus training, presentations at conferences like GMAC and the International Student Roundtable, we help administrators and advisors better understand their International student population, resulting in improved performance and satisfaction for students, advisors and administrators alike. Judy Shen-Filerman Harvard MBA, Career Expert
NEW! Program Design Consulting and Campus Community Building It can be difficult for International students to thrive in American universities. Cultural barriers can lead to social isolation, underperformance and a less-than-ideal university experience. Using our holistic approach to acculturation, we can assist in designing strategies that help diverse constituencies be accountable to building a globally-inclusive culture on campus, enabling not only international students, but all students to thrive on campus. We are grateful for the opportunity to support you and your students, especially during this time of dynamic change for your campus community. 3
OUR FOCUS Through a unique, holistic approach to the acculturation process, we strive to help all International students successfully adapt to and integrate with the American culture while they are in the U.S. Non-Western academic and interpersonal norms are significantly different from American norms. The cultural gap must be understood by International students before they can successfully navigate in the U.S., whether in academics, social situations, or in the job search. We gained further insight last year about how to effectively engage International students. Here are some of our key takeaways:
Judy’s Workshops Average Overall Rating was 4.5*
Students need constant reminders and recommendations. Last year we offered a video series of 40+ videos to a number of universities. What we saw was a correlation between universities that actively promoted and recommended videos to watch and the number of student views. Students need a step-by-step roadmap for what they need to do. Students benefit from explicit "how-to" guidance. Schools that employed our Building Blocks programs found improved student success. Judy's new book, How to Network Like an American outlines the entire process — from initial research to following up and staying in contact with networking contacts. Students and advisors alike have raved about its helpfulness for engagement. Nothing can replace live workshops for learning how "to do". The opportunity for students to see actual examples played out before them and practice new skills gave them both a better understanding of what was expected in various situations and the confidence they needed to go out and engage in their job search.

OUR MOTIVATION We’re thrilled to make a positive difference for our clients. Students and faculty confirm that we continue to provide our services in an effective and empathetic manner.
Judy brings a great awareness of cultural interactions and the challenges international students face communicating in the U.S.
Her engaging, entertaining and interactive style combined with real-life, concrete examples of how to navigate in a new environment has been particularly effective with our Wharton MBA students. SHANNON CONNELLY Senior Associate Director at University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business
Ms. Shen-Filerman knows the Chinese culture. She knows what we’re afraid of and what we need to change. That’s what makes her workshops so helpful.
The workshop on interviewing actually helped a lot in my interview with a bank thereafter. Judy has a SHERRY XIAO XU unique way Student, Fordham Business School of breaking down U.S. communications and provides students with practical steps that are actionable. I give my unequivocal recommendation for any university to tap into Judy’s breadth of experience to aid their students. NETWORKING BOOK & VIDEOS Networking is a difficult skill to master, even for Americans. Equipped with the context and frameworks we provide, combined with practice, International students will have the tools to successfully network. NETWORKING READINESS – Building confidence and storytelling skills In the U.S., 70% of jobs come from networking! Networking is a critical skill to develop if students are serious about finding a job in the U.S. The cultural aspects of networking present a unique challenge for International students, particularly those whose cultures frown upon self-promotion. Therefore, students need to possess a firm grasp of the "what" and "why" of networking before they can perfect the "how".
How to Network Like an American book Judy's book is a comprehensive, yet simple, step-by-step guide that provides a deeper understanding of networking, including access to sample emails, phone calls, cultural cues and other interactions.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM DESIGN American universities have a unique opportunity to help International students have a positive, memorable, once-in-a-lifetime experience that engenders long-term ties with the university.
International Student Program Design
PRICE
To create a truly satisfying experience, International student programs and services need to be curated in a way that helps students on their terms, at every point of contact. This includes their experience with admissions, advisors, American students and faculty. Currently, many students, especially those from Asia, experience significant challenges and hurdles as they transition to life in the U.S. Without the requisite support, they have a less-than-desirable experience. Our program design consulting helps universities consider and address the 360째 aspects of an international student's experience. We provide a framework and suggestions on critical touch points, services and learning opportunities that can help international students adapt and achieve, leaving their university experience with satisfaction and confidence.
