BRONZE HORSE FOUNDRY PAWHUSKA

A

working foundry is a rare thing in the age of globalization and outsourcing. The Bronze Horse Foundry in Pawhuska has been making metal into functional, decorative and Fine Art objects since it was established in 1981 by painter and sculptor John D. Free, Sr. (Osage). He is no

longer part of the day-to-day operations of the foundry; he still creates his own art and his wife, Rayma, does the accounting for the foundry. His sons, John Jr. (pictured) and Matt, now operate The Bronze Horse. ¶ The art of bronze sculpture is a process over 4,000 years old. Each step takes the artist’s design from the positive to negative and back to positive, and each of these

John Free, Jr. at The Bronze Horse Foundry; photos: Jeffery Newbury

steps can be time consuming and expensive making the foundry vulnerable to global competition; The Bronze Horse has lost local work to foundries in Mexico and China (some of it paid for with public funds). ¶ Artists that have worked with The Bronze Horse include Shan Gray (Osage) and Kelly Haney (Seminole). See for yourself; call to make an appointment: 918-287-4433.

T

he annual conference

and tradeshow for the Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association (OIGA) kicked off with a welcome speech by Chairman David Qualls, “This conference allows all gaming operations to come together and create best-practice solutions to ensure the self-sufficiency and continued ethical successful operation of gaming in Indian Country. Over the past few years, Indian gaming has become a leading economic engine in the area. Qualls also introduced the new OIGA Executive Director Sheila Morago, and recognized Secretary/Treasurer Janie Dillard. Tribal leaders, gaming officials, casino representatives and gaming and hospitality vendors got together at the Tulsa Convention Center for three days of golf, meetings, food and refreshments. If there was a new trend at the tradeshow, it might be the refinement of games that feature team play. Lastly, congratulations Guy Llewellen u winner of the first of four prizes given away by Dreamcatcher!

go-to favorite: Cheese Steak Sandwich, with provolone cheese, sautéed onions, mushrooms and peppers on a french roll. He rated it among his all-time best.

BUFFALO GRILLE Downstream Casino

A

visitor from Brussels came to Oklahoma so I put together a sight-seeing trip for her that included the Quapaw Tribal Museum and then to Downstream Casino. We arrived hungry, so before hitting the slots, we made our way to the bright and inviting Buffalo Grille, adjacent to the hotel lobby. We found a menu that was so extensive and reasonably priced that a feeding frenzy began. Starting with appetizers, our choices were: spinach con queso, chili cheese fries, a beer-battered onion ring tower or buffalo wings. We decided to go with the Sampler Platter and the Five Steak Fingers, fried and served with jalapeño ranch dressing and homemade queso dip. We tried two soups: beer cheddar (my favorite) and chicken tortilla, both exceeded expectations. On to sandwiches, and we tried a few: a Reuben served on grilled marbled rye bread, the Winners Club (a triple-decker with turkey, ham, and bacon) and the buffalo burger—a treat us all. Our driver ordered his

You would think we would be done, but we had to try two entrees: the grilled marinated chicken breast, with fresh mashed potatoes and a homemade roll, and Shrimp Scampi served over linguini—delicious! Our European friend was ready for a salad, and she went with the Chinese Chicken Salad, lettuce, potato sticks, chow mein noodles, mandarin oranges, carrots, and grilled chicken topped with homemade Asian dressing. She shared and we all agreed it was a perfect choice on a hot day (what day wasn’t this summer?). We all agreed that all the dishes were tasty, but were particularly impressed with the tender meats, fresh fish, mashed potatoes, homemade breads and very good lemonade. Ready for the day, we headed to the casino, full and ready for a lot of luck. —Likes-To-Eat Menus and specials: http://www.downstreamcasino.com
