POW WOW ETIQUETTE When attending a Native American event, it helps to know what behavior is considered courteous and respectful. Here are a few standard rules. • Dress and act appropriately: Women should wear a knee length skirt, which can be worn over pants. Men should wear long pants and no shorts. • The area for dancing and ceremonies is called the arena and it has been blessed and is considered sacred. Do not walk across the arena; instead walk around it. • Listen to the Master of Ceremonies’ announcements and instructions as to when to stand and remain silent. • When invited by the emcee or performers, visitors may participate in social and inter-tribal dances. • Traditional dress is called regalia and should not be referred to as a costume. Ask permission before taking photos of dancers in regalia. • Unless you are sure that seating will be provided, bring your own chair. The seating immediately around the arena is reserved for dancers and their families. • Treat everyone with respect and kindness. Do not touch things that belong to someone else or take pictures without asking permission first. • Pointing with the fingers is considered poor manners by some tribes. • Anyone under the influence or in possession of alcohol or drugs will be escorted off the grounds. It’s easy to make an innocent blunder. If you do make a mistake, a simple, heartfelt apology will always do.

REVIVING A RENEWED

TRADITION

CADDO POTTER CHASE KAHWINHUT EARLES

BUSKAHNOO “Grey Horse”

hen I decided to go into pottery and learn the Caddo method of pottery making. I soon realized there was only one person that knew how, Jereldine Redcorn,” says Chase Earles. “Jeri told me there are museums in Europe with our ancestor’s pottery. The pottery of the Caddo homelands was some of the most refined and sought after pottery in all of the land at the peak of their civilization. I wondered where all this skill went.” Through research and a lot of trial and error, Earles is helping to revive this rich tradition. The website http://caddopottery.com details his journey and his work. He is organizing the First Annual Caddo Pitfire on September 15 at the Caddo Tribal Complex in Binger.

iver Spirit Casino was the center of the billiards R world as the game’s best female players pocketed bank shots and jump shots at the Women’s Professional Billiards Association 9-Ball U.S. Open. This was the second year the event has been held at the Muscogee (Creek) Nation casino, a cool modern gaming and special events facility located right on the Arkansas River in south Tulsa. 2012 U.S. OPEN CHAMPION ALLISON FISHER >>

Throughout the week’s events, fans showed up to cheer on the amazingly-skilled women they have seen on ESPN. Five Tulsa locals competed thanks to a last chance qualifier held at Magoos billiards hall. The opening round of the 64-woman tournament featured eight tables in the center of the River Spirit poker arena with a lone table at the center for quarterfinal, semifinal and finals play.

F

ans came to their feet as well-known names like Allison “The Duchess of Doom” Fisher and Jeanette “The Black Widow” Lee entered the arena and chalked up their cues. The players returned the love by signing photos and cue sticks after their matches. It was like the World Series and fans showed up from around the country. “I’m so grateful to be standing here. It’s been a wonderful journey for me. I played really well,” said Fisher after finishing off her sixth U.S. Open title. << JEANETTE “THE BLACK WIDOW” LEE

River Spirit has the option to host the event in 2013 and it is likely to exercise that option. According to River Spirit director of marketing Bob Dimmick, “We are very happy with the event, the prestige and the opportunity it creates for River Spirit on a national stage.” –S ean C haffin Sean Chaffin is a freelance writer based in Rockwall, TX.
