This is the reaction of Kiowa Tribal member, Mr. Rick Kupke, to the movie “Argo” being named Academy Award winner for Best Picture. “Argo” tells the story of the escape of six Americans during the Hostage Crisis in Iran when a group of Islamist students and militants took over the American Embassy in Tehran in support of the Iranian Revolution. Kupke was one of the 54 American diplomats and twelve others held hostage for 444 days from November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981. He was the Communications and Electronics Specialist at the Embassy in Iran. After failed attempts to negotiate a release, the United States military attempted a rescue operation on April 24, 1980, which resulted in the deaths of eight American servicemen and one Iranian civilian. This story was based on articles written by Kupke for the Kiowa Tribe Newsletter and “American Legion” Magazine, later augmented by an interview with Dreamcatcher. was happy to see that the movie “Argo” won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. This movie by Ben Affleck was enjoyable and very suspenseful to watch. It was one of the best movies that I have ever seen. I do believe certain “Hollywood liberties” were taken in its production, however, the basic story was based upon real events. Although my part in the movie was very small, I have bragging rights for being in the Best Picture of 2012. Unfortunately, those rights came at the price of spending 444 days as a hostage in Iran under some pretty horrible conditions. I saw Argo without my wife. The first part was so realistic, that I looked for myself in the movie. That ten minutes of the film was four to five hours in my life.

I

I had been stationed elsewhere in the Middle East. My roommate was assigned to Iran but had a family situation that made me volunteer to take his place. I arrived in Tehran in August and was scheduled to leave on November 5, the day after the embassy was overrun. was the last man to surrender. I was on the roof stashing weapons in a shed on the roof. A Marine guard and I had been disabling weapons in the embassy armory; we didn’t want to be killed with our own guns. From the roof, I saw hostages being led off. The embassy had been overrun around noon but by four or five pm I was still at large, alone, on the roof. Occasionally, I would peer through the hatch to see what was going on. Iranians were swarming all over, and by this time I was being pointed out by militants from a

tall building across the way. It felt like it was me against 65 million people. I opened the door and listened for shooting. I came down and found two Iranians and held up my hands. One hit me immediately and they bounced me off the walls for a while. hey never got over being angry at us. I was told that I would be tried and executed. There were horrible tortures. I and two other hostages underwent Russian Roulette on several occasions. Other hostages were beaten. Some were placed in solitary confinement and under went interrogations lasting up to 12 hours. I would like to say that I was brave; however my courage did falter a bit. I am onequarter Kiowa and was always proud of my Kiowa heritage; it remained my goal to conduct myself in a manner that would reflect favorably on the Kiowa people. I was not allowed to go outside and I found that I really missed seeing the sun or stars. Ever since I got out, I look at the sky every day. The hardest part for me was meeting the families of the Delta Force members that were killed during the rescue attempt.

T

What the movie has done is bring attention to the whole story of the Iran Hostage Crisis. A movement is in progress in Congress to provide us former hostages with compensation based upon fines against Iran. A number of recent news

stories have appeared on CNN, ABC, and CBS concerning the 52 of us who were held for the entire 444 days. In February of this year, I was on Fox News Radio reliving some of the most difficult times of my captivity. I don’t believe the American public is aware of the conditions we were held under. One of my fellow hostages took his own life a couple months ago. In many respects, he never really came home from Iran after our release. Alcohol was a problem and assimilating back into society just never happened. He was a good man and I miss him. This is the real story of the Iran Hostage Crisis, not a scene from a movie. hese events remain with us and our families day in and day out. Even compensation would not entirely clear the slate. I am a firm believer that Iran must be accountable for their actions against Americans who represented the U.S. President in Teheran, Iran in 1979. That was our U.S. Embassy in Teheran. It belonged to you, me and all of the American people. It did not belong to a bunch of uncontrolled thugs supported by the local government. We were the President’s representatives in that country. For all the abuse we suffered and memories that still plague us, it is not too late for compensation and justice for the American hostages.
