> ARTIST HONORED AT THE CHICKASAW CULTURAL CENTER > > rent Greenwood This exclusive exhibit displays several pieces of Greenwood’s awardwinning work; primarily acrylic and mixed media paintings which blend tribal history and design elements in a contemporary fashion.“My art explores my identity as an urban indigenous person,” Greenwood said. With titles such as “Skydancer,” “X men,” and “Stomp” the faceless figures in Greenwood’s works speak volumes through colorful images, shadows and intention that captivate the onlooker and provide insight into Native America, spoken through the strokes of his brushwork. > >

NA'II'EES APACHE SUNRISE CEREMONY

13

> The Apache Na’ii’ees
(Sunrise Ceremony) is a
four-day ritual that Apache girls experience after their first menstruation. Through numerous sacred ceremonies, dances, songs, and enactments, the girls attain the physical and spiritual power of White Painted Woman, and become women
 of the Apache nation.

> On the first evening family and friends gather at Cierra’s camp on the White Mountain Apache reservation. The presiding medicine man, Bert Hinton, starts the ceremony.

> We thank Cierra’s family and Mr. Hinton for allowing us to document this occasion. Special thanks to Thana Sinquah for her assistance and hospitality. We will feature this Na’ii’ees
 in three parts.

NA'II'EES APACHE SUNRISE CEREMONY

15 The first woman, White Painted Woman (also known as Esdzanadehe, and Changing Woman) survive the great Flood in an abalone shell. She established a puberty rite to be given for all daughters of her people, and to instruct the women of the tribe in the ritual.

> On the first evening the Dressing Ceremony takes place: the girl is dressed by her godmother with an eagle feather, an abalone shell, and a buckskin dress.

> The family takes care in choosing the godmother. As her primary attendant in the Sunrise ceremony, the godmother will dance with her both day and night, massage her, help inspirie her and to feed and care for her.

> Cierra is guided by the medicine man through the stages of the ceremony. Another female relative, usually an older sister or cousin, is also actively involved, lending support to her when her energy fades.

> The medicine man hands the sacred cane to the girl. For the duration of the ceremony, the girl is not allowed to bathe or touch things; she has to use a scratching stick and drinks through a yellow reed.

> In the course of the ceremony, Cierra will act out four Apache life objectives: physical strength, good disposition, prosperity; and a sound, healthy, old age.
