THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD WEB DESIGN AND ITS IMPACT ON PEOPLE AND PROFIT

The moment you feel you are in need of some information about a product or a brand before you buy it, your hand automatically begins to scroll the mobile device or the computer. It is generally taken for granted that any company of standard repute invests in a website. So you go to the website and try to get the information that you want. Youngsters are experts in this tasks; middle-aged are catching up rapidly. Few of the old generation venture into the premises. Whoever visits it, is happy if they find what they want by themselves, without help or guidance from anyone. This user friendliness is important and expected in a website. Recently, I went to my bank to get the pass book updated across the counter. The clerk pointed to a new machine in the corner and told me to do it myself. I had never done it and was slightly apprehensive. I stood in the line watching what others were doing but could not read the instructions on the screen. When my turn arrived, I stood holding the open passbook in my hand and wondering what I should do. The screen gave clear instructions; I followed them, and it was done successfully. This is what one would expect from a website. A good website design is certainly responsible for connecting you to people. Here are some characteristics that would enhance the functions of a website design and create a positive impact on visitors: 

The Home page must give a brief idea about the nature of the organization and what exactly they are involved in. I would like to give another example. I went through the content in a website and gathered that the concerned company is engaged in providing corporate training. I have heard about such services and got the impression that this is one more organization of a similar kind. Later, I met the owner of the organization who explained that they do not stop with training, but implement various processes and continue to work with the trainees until a smooth workflow is established using the new principles and techniques that are introduced. They maintain follow-up until the process is successful. I had to point out that this difference in their procedure was nor evident in the website and needed to be highlighted. If brief headings followed by interesting punch lines are given on the home page the ideas will be clear. There must be a provision to get details when the relevant option is clicked.

Sliding pictures on the Home page can make it look attractive but the pictures must be carefully chosen.

Future events, special programmes etc. can be announced through sliding strips across the top margin.

Tabs must be clear and one must be able to find required details when options are selected.

Too much animation distracts and must be avoided.

It is advisable not to use too many colours or very bright colours.

There should be limited content on each page. Language must be simple and easy to understand. All types of people visit a website; there may be scholars and experts in the field. Hence, technical details and specifications must be correct and accurate. The language and style are also important. Diction should suit the topic or product. Spelling mistakes and grammatical mistakes in a website do not create a good impression.

To sum up, a good website is one that everyone of any age finds comfortable and convenient to use. It should be self-explanatory in case it involves form filling, reviews or other responses from visitors. One tends to trust a good website and gets quickly connected to it. A god website should not be a static face but an interactive platform that adds more and more visitors to your organization leading to profits in the long run.
