ALBERTINUM

The former armoury was built between 1559 and 1563 on what is now Brühl's Terrace. It was converted into a museum in the 19th century and has been called the Albertinum since then. Today, art from the beginning of the 19th century to the most recent present, from Caspar David Friedrich to Gerhard Richter, is shown here. As a museum of modern art, masterpieces of Romanticism, Impressionism, Expressionism, New Objectivity and the present can be experienced here. The wide variety and great quality of the picture collection distinguish the Albertinum and make it one of the most important museums of its kind in Germany.

The Albertinum houses: Art from the Romantic Period to the Present Day, Sculpture Collection from 1800

View of the Albertinum

In Albertinum, painting meets sculpture, east meets west, yesterday meets today and tomorrow. In a tour through the gallery, you can see masterpieces from the Romance to the present: Caspar David Friedrich, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Neo Rauch and Gerhard Richter. Highlights are also the sculptures made by Auguste Rodin, Wilhelm Lehmbruck and Hermann Glöckner. For the exhibition in the Albertinum, modernism begins with works by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, who ushered in the age of modern sculpture. The Klinger Hall deals with the art of the Fin de Siècle. The Mosaic Hall is dedicated to the major theme of morality through sculptures of classicism. In the experimental display storeroom, the heart of the collection, the antiquities collection, is staged.

ROYAL PALACE

The Dresden Residence Palace was once the centre of power of the Saxon electors and kings. First mentioned as a castle complex in the 14th century, the four-winged palace building was constructed in the 15th century. From 1485 it was the permanent residence of the Saxon rulers and is still a castle of the High Renaissance. After being destroyed by fire in 1701, the castle was rebuilt under Augustus the Strong. The castle was destroyed again during the Second World War. It was not until 1985 that reconstruction began as a museum complex of the Dresden State Art Collections. Today, the exterior of the Residence Palace is in the neo-Renaissance style, with sgraffito painting in the Renaissance style in the large courtyard. It is overlooked by the Hausmann Tower, from whose viewing platform there is an interesting panoramic view of the old town.

The Parade Rooms were opened in 1719 on the occasion of the ‘Century Wedding’ of Prince Elector Friedrich August and the Emperor’s daughter Maria Josepha. In this enfilade, August the Strong staged his reign. His famous passion for the white gold is shown in the reconstructed porcelain chamber in the tower room. FIREARMS GALLERY IN THE LONG CORRIDOR

The Long Corridor is one of the most important examples of Renaissance architecture in Saxony. Elector Christian I had the gallery, which is about 100 metres long, built to connect the residential palace with the stable building (today's Johanneum). With the restoration a representative selection of about 500 of the most magnificent firearms in the collection of the Saxon electors has returned to the Long Corridor of the Royal Palace.

LEONHARDI MUSEUM

With its oriel, turret and picturesque decorations of sayings and rhymes on the half-timbered façade, the “Leo” looks a little out of time. But appearances are deceptive: the Leonhardi Museum, located near the Blue Wonder, shows changing exhibitions of contemporary Saxon art and a permanent display of paintings by Eduard Leonhardi.

PANOMETER DRESDEN

The Panometer in Dresden, a historical gasometer built in 1880, makes an impressive 3,000-square-metres setting for the powerful images of Yadegar Asisi's 360° panoramas. On an area 27 metres high and 106 metres in circumference, the giant panoramas ‘BAROQUE DRESDEN – Myth of the Royal City of Saxony’ and ‘DRESDEN 1945 – Tragedy and Hope of a European City’ are shown in regular rotation. The unique experience with a view from the 15-metre-high visitor tower is completed by a changing day and night light simulation and accompanying music with atmospheric sound carpet. An exhibition around the panorama introduces the respective theme. The panoramas are complemented by guided tours for young and old as well as a film about the creation of the panoramas and the motivation behind them.

The Panometer Dresden shows the following exhibitions in rotation: BAROQUE DRESDEN – Myth of the Royal City of Saxony DRESDEN 1945 – Tragedy and Hope of a European City

BAROQUE DRESDEN

Current exhibition until 2023

The huge panoramic image ‘BAROQUE DRESDEN – Myth of the Royal City of Saxony’ shows the Saxon capital in its most famous era: the Baroque period. Yadegar Asisi’s breathtaking panorama focuses on life in the Baroque city, with some famous faces welcoming visitors.

DRESDEN 1945

Upcoming exhibition from 2023

The 360° panorama ‘DRESDEN 1945 – Tragedy and Hope of a European City’ shows the destroyed city centre of Dresden immediately after the Allied air raids in February 1945. On a scale of 1:1, the viewer experiences the extent of the destruction as it was over 75 years ago from the town hall tower on the edge of the old town. An accompanying multimedia exhibition introduces the subject matter.
