Dear friends, It is my greatest honour to welcome you to the first edition of DRESSED UP. Since 1953, our growing team has been putting their heart and soul into bringing the finest of fashion to our friends and clients in Antwerp and Knokke. Over the years, we’ve reinvented ourselves many times so we could stay one step ahead of the game. Now, as a member of the third generation of this family business, I asked myself: Is there a way I can connect with you, our customer? How can I let you exclusively preview our new designers and collections, show you what goes on behind the scenes, put a face on the Princess brand! How can I build a bridge between ‘us’ and ‘you’… So I dreamed up Dressed Up, a gateway to the 21st Century Princess. I hope you love it as much as I loved making it, and I hope to see you in store soon! Yours truly, Frédéric.

WHAT’S NEW: DESIGNERS At Princess, we’re always searching for the best new designers to offer to our clients. Here’s a selection of this season’s newcomers.

Balmain Who Founded by Pierre Balmain in 1945, now designed by Christophe Decarnin, 45, France What This French fashion house may be over 60 years old, but it has never been hotter than it is today. Balmain combines rock ‘n roll with luxury like no other designer has ever done and its celebrity fanbase is enormous. The label has been a real trendsetter in the past few seasons: they were responsible for the return of the big shoulder, military jackets and ripped jeans. It is the must have brand for rock and roll girls with class. Where Sketch

Peter Pilotto Who Peter Pilotto, 32 , Austria & Christopher De Vos, 29, Belgium What These two young designers met whilst studying at the Royal Academy in Antwerp, and have been getting rave reviews since launching their first collection 3 seasons ago. Their magic formula of combining out-of-this-world prints with interesting draping to create the ultimate party dress has made them two of the most exciting new designers around. Where Princess Blue, Sketch

4

Christopher Kane Who Christopher Kane, 27, Scotland What This young designer is so talented he was handpicked by Donatella Versace to work for her whilst still studying at the prestigious fashion school Central St Martins. He has now had 4 successful seasons of showing his collection on his own, gaining more fans every time. His gorilla print was so popular it was made into a T-shirts, they sold out in just a few days at Princess Blue. Where Princess Blue

INTERVIEW

22

In every issue of DRESSED UP we meet a vital member of the Princess clan. Today we have a chat with Frederic, founder of DRESSED UP and a member of the third generation to have joined this family run business. We talk about new brands, what it’s like working with your family and his favourite cities in Belgium.

How long have you been working for Princess? What did you do before?

I’ve been in the business for almost two years. I came in with the goal to learn and to teach. I could learn from reality, and teach from what I learned during my schooldays in Barcelona. It has been a very interesting exercise to manage a balance between those two facts. My feeling is that nothing is ever good enough, that something can always be better. Let’s work hard and let’s be the best at what we do! Otherwise… what ìs the point?! What is it like working for a family business with such a long history?

It’s definitely an honour, that’s for sure! Being the third generation is getting unique these days, I’m very grateful for that. But in terms of daily life it’s a real challenge, anything but boring. We are not selling bricks, you know. I mean… you could see it as a real complex brick: one that changes with the mood of every season and where there are dozens of other shops next door selling the same, but different bricks... So, how do things work when you’re in the business with your family?

At the heart of it all we have four people. It’s very much a family thing - here we don’t have labels, saying: “financial director”, or “marketing director”... No, most ideas emerge outside the working atmosphere. During weekly meetings, action is taken: it’s an open debate where everybody can defend their pros and cons. Instinct and experience are definitely the basis of everything that moves Princess. On the Executive level, we’re surrounded by 15 beautiful minds and hands working behind the scenes, making everything flow smoothly. Then there are about 50 passionate stylists, those who work in the boutiques, in direct contact with our clients. They are the real face of Princess, we are just the oil that keeps the motor running smoothly. About the clothes now… what do you think is the biggest trend for FW09?

This season there is no escaping the feel-good glamour the 80’s brings! Think biker babes, rock chicks, bold shoulders, fur, leather everything! We’re back in black, it’s a mixture of shiny and matte textures which make it look new & fresh! Metallics, golds & bronzes, they are practically classics now, they don’t show any sign of fading away… What collection/designer are you most excited about this season?

This season’s hottest newcomer is definitely Balmain! Brand new for us, but they’ve been well known to the world for ages! It has everything a successful, desirable brand should have! The collection has been very welcomed by our clients in our boutique Sketch! If you could buy one designer item this year, whose would it be?

Alexander Wang What are you looking for in a new designer?

The capacity of bringing forward a certain point of view in a tasteful aesthetical way. Whether the clothes talk or not, whether there is a soul beyond or not. What is the most fashionable city in Belgium right now and why?

Mmm, I love Brussels for its cultural diversity, its mixture of young people trying to mean something! The schwung that this city has is way different than 10 years ago! There’s a definitely a good mood hanging above Brussels. As for Antwerp, it’s definitely the people that make the city! Young creative minds willing to change the world, one fashion statement at a time! The countless fashion-labs where new ideas are created, the mix & match between designer boutiques, multibrand and vintage stores… It’s these elements that give this city its magical vibe, which excites people to come here from all around the world.
